Effect of underfeeding on metabolism of portal-drained viscera in ewes.

We investigated whether short-term underfeeding could induce adaptative mechanisms in portal-drained viscera (PDV) that would allow nutrients to be spared for vital functions in adult ewes. Six ewes (three of them fitted with catheters in the mesenteric artery and portal and mesenteric veins) were fed, in a double Latin square design (2 weeks per experimental period), a regrowth of natural grassland hay at 143 (high; H), 88 (medium; M) and 51 (low; L) % of their energy maintenance requirements. The digestibility of the diet was measured in all six ewes and the net portal fluxes of nutrients in

[Toxicologic and nutritional aspects of nitrates and nitrites].

The toxic action of nitrates and nitrites has often been summarized by methemoglobinemia and nitrosation of amines inducing carcinogenic effects; these two impacts are spectacular, but they hide varying more or less insidious actions recently studied and perceived. In the NO3/NO2 couple, it is accepted that especially nitrite ion lays down a toxicological problem, probably because of its particular chemical reactivity: nitrite ion, which is the base of nitrous acid HNO2 (pKa = 3.36) can react with many functional groups from dietary or endogenous origin; it is also a reducing agent, only oxida

An analysis of the gastro-intestinal side-effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, with particular reference to comparative studies in man and laboratory species.

A critical analysis has been performed of reports published on the incidence of gastro-intestinal (GI) side-effects found in arthritic patients being treated with non-steroid anti-inflammatory (NSAI) drugs. The results show the following: 1. The incidence of GI ulceration (as revealed by gastroscopy) and haemorrhage in arthritic patients taking NSAI drugs may be higher than suspected from clinical trial data. 2. Incidence of all GI side-effects (including ulceration and haemorrhage) may be lower with some of the new NSAI drugs than with traditional drugs (e.g. aspirin, indomethacin and phenylb

sEMG and Vibration System Monitoring for Differential Diagnosis in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.

The stomatognathic system represents an important element of human physiology, constituting a part of the digestive, respiratory, and sensory systems. One of the signs of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can be the formation of vibroacoustic and electromyographic (sEMG) phenomena. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of temporomandibular joint rehabilitation in patients suffering from locking of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular disc by analysis of vibrations, sEMG registration of masseter muscles, and hypertension of masticatory muscles. In this paper, a new

Interactions between morphine and nitric oxide in various organs.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays obligatory roles as an important intercellular messenger in the control of physiological functions and it also participates in pathophysiological interventions. This labile, gaseous molecule is also involved in mechanisms underlying the beneficial and untoward actions of therapeutic agents. Endogenous NO is formed by endothelial and neurogenic NO synthases that are constitutively present mainly in the endothelium and nervous system, respectively, and is induced by lipopolysaccharides or cytokines mainly in mitochondria, glial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells. NO

The nature and consequences of childbirth pain.

For most women, childbirth is associated with very severe pain often exceeding all expectations. Some childbirth education groups and popular texts on the subject, however, seem disposed to encourage unrealistic expectations: claiming that labour is other than painful and that pharmacological analgesia is both unnecessary and harmful. All too often, those who promote such views witness women in labour only occasionally and are rarely responsible for patient care. Pain associated with uterine contractions should be distinguished from that associated with delivery: for there are important differ

Noninvasive measurement of anatomic structure and intraluminal oxygenation in the gastrointestinal tract of living mice with spatial and spectral EPR imaging.

EPR imaging has emerged as an important tool for noninvasive three-dimensional (3D) spatial mapping of free radicals in biological tissues. Spectral-spatial EPR imaging enables mapping of the spectral information at each spatial position, and, from the observed line width, the localized tissue oxygenation can be mapped. We report the development of EPR imaging instrumentation enabling 3D spatial and spectral-spatial EPR imaging of small animals. This instrumentation, along with the use of a biocompatible charcoal oximetry-probe suspension, enabled 3D spatial imaging of the gastrointestinal (GI

Localization, physiological significance and possible clinical implication of gastrointestinal melatonin.

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is a major source of extrapineal melatonin. In some animals, tissue concentrations of melatonin in the GIT surpass blood levels by 10-100 times and the digestive tract contributes significantly to melatonin concentrations in the peripheral blood, particularly during the day. Some melatonin found in the GIT may originate from the pineal gland, as the organs of the digestive system contain binding sites, which in some species exhibit circadian variation. Unlike the production of pineal melatonin, which is under the photoperiodic control, release of GI melatonin s

Action of gastrin on gastrointestinal structure and function.

In previous communications we have reported using the rat fed by total parenteral nutrition to examine the effects of the absence of food from the gut on functional and structural parameters of the gastrointestinal tract. In the current study three groups of animals were fed parenterally; one received a continuous infusion of pentagastrin equal to about one-half the D50 for acid secretion, another received a comparable infusion of histamine, and a third group was given only the liquid diet. These animals were compared to orally fed sham operated controls. The parenterally fed animals had signi

Apparent jejunal amino acid digestibility, gut morphology, and the expression of intestinal amino acid transporters in pigs fed protein or free amino acids.

Dietary amino acids (AA) supplied as protein or in free form are not only digested and absorbed at different rates but can also induce differences in the intestinal physiology of pigs. We compared the apparent jejunal AA digestibility, intestinal morphology, and gene expression of AA transporters of pigs fed diets providing different forms of AA. Thirty growing pigs (33.7 ± 4.1 kg) were fed one of three experimental diets that provided AA either as protein from feather meal (INT), as free AA and small peptides obtained by extensive acid hydrolysis of feathers (HYD), or as a mix of individual p

The blood-brain barrier as a regulatory interface in the gut-brain axes.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents the unrestricted movement of peptides and proteins between the brain and blood. However, some peptides and regulatory proteins can cross the BBB by saturable and non-saturable mechanisms. Leptin and insulin each cross the BBB by their own transporters. Impaired transport of leptin occurs in obesity and accounts for peripheral resistance; that is, the condition wherein an obese animal loses weight when given leptin directly into the brain but not when given leptin peripherally. Leptin transport is also inhibited in starvation and by hypertriglyceridemia. S

Acute hyponatraemia and 'ecstasy': insights from a quantitative and integrative analysis.

A 20-year-old woman attended a 'rave party' where she took the drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy'). She had used this drug previously without serious adverse effects. On this occasion, while both she and her friends drank a large quantity of water, only she became seriously ill. The initial manifestation was an altered sensorium; several hours later she had a grand mal seizure. In the Emergency Department, the most striking features were the severe degree of hyponatraemia (112 mmol/l) and cerebral oedema. To explain the basis for this life-threatening clinical presentation

Changes in the gastrointestinal electric pattern to motion sickness in susceptibles and insusceptibles during fasting.

The cardinal symptoms of motion sickness occur in the gastrointestinal system. This study sought to investigate the influence of sickness-provoking motion stimuli on the interdigestive migrating electric complex (IDMEC) of the gastro-intestinal system. Thirteen susceptibles and 14 insusceptibles to motion sickness were subjected to intralumenal recording before and after caloric vestibular stimulations. Motion sickness developed in all subjects. The results indicate that there are no significant differences in the IDMECs of susceptibles and insusceptibles in a state of rest; vestibular stimula

Bacterial translocation in mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion injury: is dysfunctional motility the link?

The authors previously reported that mesenteric ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) in a chronic newborn piglet model creates dysfunctional intestinal motility. Whether this leads to inadequate bacterial clearance and translocation (BT) through the gastrointestinal tract remains unclear. To test this hypothesis the authors used their chronic piglet model (weight, 3.5 +/- 0.3 kg; age, 18 +/- 4 days; on formula feeding); nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia was induced via reversible pericardial tamponade. Mesenteric flow (SMA Doppler measurement via the retroperitoneal approach) was decreased to 25% +/-

Intraoperative tissue oximetry in the human gastrointestinal tract.

Tissue oxygen tension was measured using a modified Clark oxygen electrode in the gastrointestinal tract of 33 patients undergoing laparatomy. The electrode, which incorporated a thermistor, had a linear response to oxygen tension (r = 0.995, p less than 0.001). The patients were all maintained on an inspired oxygen concentration of 33 +/- 3% and had a mean arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) of 124.9 +/- 31.9 mm Hg. Tissue oxygen tension measurements (mm Hg, mean +/- SD) were recorded from the serosal surfaces of the stomach (46.3 +/- 15.4), mid-ileum (36 +/- 9.7), terminal ileum (33.5 +/- 11.5),

Characteristics of secretin-stimulated pancreatic secretion in dogs.

The effect of the periodic interdigestive activity of the gut on secretin-stimulated pancreatic secretion was studied in eight conscious dogs each with a Thomas duodenal fistula, a gastric fistula and a Heidenhain pouch. Pancreatic water and bicarbonate responses to a small dose of secretin were greatly augmented in phase with the spontaneous periodic activity of the gut. This augmentation was closely related to pancreatic protein secretion. As the dose of secretin was increased the interval between peaks was prolonged, the peaks became less sharp, the nadirs were raised, and finally the perio

Release of opioid peptides in anaesthetized cats?

1 The effect on arterial blood pressure of intravenous injections of naloxone (200 mug) was examined in cats anaesthetized with chloralose. Usually these injections have no effect on blood pressure unless morphine or opioid peptides have been injected, when they produce a pressor response with tachycardia.2 It was found that these injections produced a pressor response with tachycardia after a combination of two or more of the following surgical procedures: (1) tying sinus nerves, (2) removing stellate ganglia, (3) cutting vagi, (4) evisceration.3 The pressor responses obtained in these condit

Roles of the calcium sensing receptor in digestive physiology and pathophysiology (review).

Calcium participates in most of the biological processes in the human body. The calcium sensing receptor (CaSR), as an important regulator of calcium homeostasis, is expressed in all of the organs of the digestive system. CaSR plays a key role in gastrointestinal physiological function and in the occurrence of digestive disease. For example, the inactivation or mutation of the CaSR gene usually leads to one of several disorders of calcium metabolism. High dietary Ca2+ may stimulate CaSR activation and could both inhibit tumor development and increase the chemotherapeutic sensitivity of cancer
