High morphological plasticity and global geographical distribution of the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum): molecular and morphological survey.

The most important causative agent of human diphyllobothriosis in South America, Diphyllobothrium pacificum, is transferred to the original genus Adenocephalus Nybelin, 1931; revised and redescribed on the basis of the evaluation of an extensive material collected mainly from northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus, from St. Paul Island, Alaska. Detailed analysis of morphological and morphometrical data shows a high variability in most of the characteristics traditionally used in diagnosis of diphyllobothriid tapeworms. Phylogenetic analyses based on newly characterised sequences of mitochondri

Inter- and intra-specific characterization of tapeworms of the genus Diphyllobothrium (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) from Switzerland, using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA targets.

Human diphyllobothriosis is caused by at least 14 species of cestodes belonging to the genus Diphyllobothrium. Molecular analysis by sequencing of nuclear and mitochondrial targets identifies some species at inter- and intra-specific level, and helps to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships. Nevertheless, the suitability of further molecular targets deserves to be widened, and the comparison of samples of different geographical origin could allow their intra-specific characterization, which could also be useful for epidemiological purposes. In this study, we investigated inter- and intr

[The environmental conditions and predictors of formation of the bases for a combination of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and Triaenophorus nodulosus foci in the flood-river ecosystem of the Angara River].

Investigations were conducted in the context of the landscape-biocenological concept. The formation of water-storage basins in the valley of the Angara River was shown to give rise to the transformation of the morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, which determined a change in some environmental conditions and factors of a combination of foci and the emergence of others. The morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, the species composition of ecosystems, the populations of hosts, and their biocenotic relations were transformed due to the direct

Selected pathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural changes associated with an infection by Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda) plerocercoids in Coregonus lavaretus (L.) (Coregonidae).

The pathological changes induced by an infection of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) plerocercoids in powan, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), from Loch Lomond, Scotland, were assessed using immunohistochemical and ultrastructural techniques. In a sample of 26 powan, the occurrence of encysted plerocercoids of D. dendriticum on the outer surface of the stomach was 38.5% (n = 10) with the number of cysts ranging from 4 to 15 and measuring 4.2 +/- 1.0 mm x 3.4 +/- 0.9 mm (mean +/- SD). Histological examination of intestinal samples also revealed plerocercoids (2-21) encapsulated within a pro

Sequential development of the immune response in rainbow trout [Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)] to experimental plerocercoid infections of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824).

Development of the inflammatory response of rainbow trout to experimental infections with Diphyllobothrium dendriticum plerocercoids is described using light and electron microscopy. The cellular response to plerocercoids occurred within 2 weeks post-infection (p.i.). This was followed by an increase in leucocyte numbers during weeks 3-6 p.i., with full encapsulation of plerocercoids by week 6 p.i. Neutrophils were the first leucocytes to engage the developing plerocercoid, followed by large influxes of macrophages which transformed into epithelioid cells. With longer times p.i. the accumulati

Is the human-infecting Diphyllobothrium pacificum a valid species or just a South American population of the holarctic fish broad tapeworm, D. latum?

Using ITS2 gene sequences, the validity of the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium pacificum (Nybelin, 1931), infecting humans on the Pacific coast of South America and in Japan, was assessed. ITS2 sequences of this cestode differed markedly (sequence similarity 79.0-80.2%) from those of the most common human-infecting cestode, the broad fish tapeworm Diphyllobothrium latum (L.), as well as other four species of Diphyllobothrium, including potential human parasites (D. cordatum, D. dendriticum, and D. lanceolatum) and two species of Spirometra (sequence similarity 77.5-81.9%). Plerocercoids of the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum in brown trout Salmo trutta: substantial increase in infection after establishment of European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus.

This study focuses on plerocercoids of the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum in brown trout Salmo trutta from the subalpine lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in south-central Norway. Salmo trutta was the only fish species in this lake until European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus was registered in 1969. The P. phoxinus population increased substantially in the following years. In contrast with the 1969-1972 period, when plerocercoids of D. ditremum were practically absent in S. trutta, there was a high prevalence and intensity of infection in the 2013 S. trutta samples. Because the life cycle of D. ditremum in

Leucocyte migration in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss [Walbaum]): optimization of migration conditions and responses to host and pathogen (Diphyllobothrium dendriticum [Nitzsch]) derived chemoattractants.

A rainbow trout leucocyte-derived chemoattractant(s) was prepared and tested as a stimulant of leucocyte migration. It was used to optimize an in vitro leucocyte migration assay using a 48-well micro chemotaxis chamber. This assay has subsequently been used to test the chemoattractant activity of antigen extracts from the tegument of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum plerocercoids and conditioned medium obtained after in vitro maintenance of live plerocercoids. Leucocytes were found to have an increased directional motility (chemotactic response) to the host-derived chemoattractant(s) but a random

[New cases of Diphyllobothrium pacificum (Nybelin, 1931) Margolis, 1956 human infection in North of Chile, probably related with El Niño phenomenon, 1975-2000].

The effect of El Niño/ENSO on terrestrial atmosphere appears to be extremely clear. However there are outstanding evidences showing its effect on humans and their activities. In fact, prevalence of some parasitic infections have increased during El Niño phenomenon. The reasons for that are the migrations of sylvatic mammals, fishes and birds as well as by environmental contamination. In this report, we show evidence respect of new cases of human infection by Diphyllobothrium pacificum clearly associated with a cyclic manifestation of El Niño in the Chilean Pacific coast during 1975-2000.

Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) found from a harbor porpoise in northern Japan, with comments on a geographical gap with human infection cases in southern Japan.

Even though the cetacean tapeworm Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum occurs in both cold and warm waters, human infections and final host occurrences have been confined to temperate areas in and near Japan. We recently obtained a strobila of this cestode that was excreted from a harbor porpoise accidentally caught offshore of Hokkaido of northern Japan. Genetic analysis of 28S rDNA and cox1 genes confirmed that the cestode was D. stemmacephalum. Our finding sets the northernmost record of D. stemmacephalum in the western Pacific, suggesting that the risk of human infections by this parasite in no

Diphyllobothriasis in a nine-year-old child in India: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The Diphyllobothrium genus belongs to the Diphyllobothridea order of tapeworms. Diphyllobothrium spp., which is commonly known as fish tapeworm, is generally transmitted in humans, but also in other species, such as bears, dogs, cats, foxes, and other terrestrial carnivores. Although worldwide in distribution, the original heartland of Diphyllobothrium spp. spreads across Scandinavia, northern Russia, and western Serbia. We report a rare case that occurred in India.
