A Rare Case of Pseudomyiasis in a Dog by Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae).

Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), commonly known as black soldier fly is a dipterous species which can produce enteric pseudomyiasis in humans and domestic animals. Veterinary cases of intestinal myiasis caused by H. illucens in dogs have not been reported previously. We present this rare pseudomyiasis (= accidental myiasis) produced by infestation with several larvae of the intestinal tract in a dog inhabiting a city in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Gasterophilus intestinalis (Diptera: Oestridae) in the diaphragmatic muscle: An unusual finding.

Larval forms of the bot-fly Gasterophilus are obligate parasites commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of equids, causing intestinal myiasis. Five species are reported so far in Italy, mostly observed during necroscopy, located in different portion of gastrointestinal tract of equids: G. intestinalis, G. nasalis, G. inermis, G. pecorum and G. haemorrhoidalis. An unusual finding of larval Gasterophilus intestinalis deeply inserted into the diaphragmatic muscle is here reported. Due to the uncommon localization, to the absence of clinical signs related to myiasis and subsequent uncertaint

The Diversity of Yellow-Related Proteins in Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Yellow-related proteins (YRPs) present in sand fly saliva act as affinity binders of bioamines, and help the fly to complete a bloodmeal by scavenging the physiological signals of damaged cells. They are also the main antigens in sand fly saliva and their recombinant form is used as a marker of host exposure to sand flies. Moreover, several salivary proteins and plasmids coding these proteins induce strong immune response in hosts bitten by sand flies and are being used to design protecting vaccines against Leishmania parasites. In this study, thirty two 3D models of different yellow-related p

Inconsistency in the analysis of morphological deformities in chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) larvae.

The incidence of morphological deformities of chironomid larvae as an indicator of sediment toxicity has been studied for decades. However, standards for deformity analysis are lacking. The authors evaluated whether 25 experts diagnosed larval deformities in a similar manner. Based on high-quality digital images, the experts rated 211 menta of Chironomus spp. larvae as normal or deformed. The larvae were from a site with polluted sediments or from a reference site. The authors revealed this to a random half of the experts, and the rest conducted the assessment blind. The authors quantified the

POPULATION DYNAMICS OF DROSOPHILA SUZUKII (DIPTERA: DROSOPHILIDAE) IN BELGIUM IN 2013.

The vinegar fly Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera Drosophilidae), spotted wing drosophila, is a new invasive fruit pest that recently became established in Europe. Unlike other fruit flies that typically only infest overripe and rotten fruit, D. suzukii females oviposit in ripe fruit leading to considerable economic losses of fruit during production. In 2011 and 2012 D. suzukii was detected at several places in Belgium. In 2013, a large-scale monitoring in frame of the project "FLY ALERT" (FOD) was executed using traps with liquid attractant (apple cider vinegar) at more than 100 locatio

Myiasis by Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae) in a python affected by pulmonitis.

Myiases are caused by the presence of maggots in vertebrate tissues and organs. Myiases have been studied widely in humans, farm animals, and pets, whereas reports of myiasis in reptiles are scarce. We describe a case of myiasis caused by the Megaselia scalaris (Loew) in an Indian python (Python molurus bivittatus, Kuhl) (Ophida: Boidae). The python, 15 yr old, born and reared in a terrarium in the mainland of Venice (Italy), was affected by diffuse, purulent pneumonia caused by Burkholderia cepacia. The severe infestation of maggots found in the lungs during an autopsy indicated at a myiasis.

Ultrastructure of larvae and puparia of the blowfly Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Chrysomya megacephala is a forensic important fly, and its immature forms also cause myiasis. The adults are the first insects to reach a carcass and can oviposit just a few hours after arrival. Therefore, the knowledge of immature stages of flies is essential for correct identification of the species found on corpses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) gives detailed information on the morphological characters that can help identify the immature forms of flies. The aim of this study is to identify larvae and puparia of C. megacephala using SEM. The larval instar body of C. megacephala is simi

Malformations of the genitalia in male Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) (Diptera: Psychodidae) is a major vector of Leishmania major (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), a causative agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Morphological characters of sand fly genitalia are key indicators for species identification. Various anomalies affecting male genitalia have been previously described. We take advantage of a large sand flies survey conducted in 32 stations in Central and Southern Morocco to systematically quantify the prevalence and spatial distribution of malformations affecting the genitalia of P. papatasi. Persistence of sterile screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) flies at a release site.

Studies to determine the persistence of released, sterile screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), were conducted in Belize, Central America, in 1987-1988. A total of nine releases were made, each consisting of 4,000 females marked with a fluorescent dust. Previous similar studies with baited fly traps indicated that flies died or dispersed from the release site within 3-4 d. For this study, flies were recaptured at sentinel animals. Recapture rates varied greatly between releases, a result that was not correlated with any weather parameter. The pattern of recapture indicated a sharp dr

Lutzomyia ovallesi (Diptera: Psychodidae) as a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Venezuela.

In the search for vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Barro Negro forest, Duaca, Lara State, Venezuela, 4,864 wild-caught Lutzomyia females were dissected and examined for promastigotes. Natural infection was found in 25 (0.5%) Lu. ovallesi. By biological parameters and enzyme electrophoresis all isolates from Lu. ovallesi were indistinguishable from those obtained from humans and dogs in the same Region. The isoenzyme profile of these isolates appear to indicate that strains were a hybrid between Leishmania braziliensis and L. guyanensis.

Oviposition by screwworm flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) on contact with host fluids.

Factor affecting oviposition by screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), contacting different host fluids were examined in a laboratory bioassay. Fresh bovine blood, which does not release the attractive odors involved in host finding, nevertheless stimulated as many or more females to oviposit than did the other fluids tested. These other fluids included attractive fluid from screwworm-infected wounds (a favored oviposition site in nature) and cultures of Providencia rettgeri (a bacterium implicated in attractant production). Oviposition did not vary with batch of fresh blood or f

The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi (Diptera: Chaoboridae).

The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi were studied using light and electron microscopy. Mandibles, hypopharynx and labium are highly sclerotized and are modified for obtaining blood meals. All structures were larger in C. brakeleyi than in C. wirthi except mandibular and hypopharyngeal teeth; these were smaller and more numerous in C. brakeleyi. The labium of both species terminates in peg-like structures which are similar to those reported from several genera of mosquitoes. Sensillae on the second segment of the maxillary palps appear to be identical to those described

A new look at the feeding behaviour of haematophagous Diptera: the biting habits of Leptoconops (Megaconops) floridensis Wirth (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)FIRST REVIEW ROUND - REVIEWERS' COMMENTSREVIEWERS' COMMENTS.

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecological relationships among species and their pathogens is essential for assessing disease dynamics and associated risks to human, animal, and environmental health. Some haematophagous ceratopogonid species feed on birds and may act as vectors for haemoparasites, viruses, and bacteria. However, no reports have documented these insects feeding within the internal organs of birds. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the first recorded occurrence of ceratopogonids feeding within the respiratory system of debilitated kelp gulls and cormorants. METHODS: As part of

Unexpectedly aggressive human-biting behaviour of Hippobosca equina Linnaeus (Diptera: Hippoboscidae).

We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra

A laboratory system for rearing Simuliidae (Diptera) under simulated lotic environments.

BACKGROUND: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are ecologically important components of lotic ecosystems and a public health concern due to their aggressive biting behavior, pathogen transmission, and induction of allergic and inflammatory reactions in humans and livestock. Despite their relevance, experimental research on Simuliidae remains limited compared with other dipteran vectors, largely because their immature stages require specific aquatic conditions that are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Larval development depends on continuous water flow, high dissolved oxygen, and suspen
