Dirofilariasis is an emerging zoonotic infection caused by filarial nematodes from the Dirofilaria genus, typically transmitted through mosquito bites. This case is unique because of the migratory nature of subcutaneous nodules, a presentation seldom associated with Dirofilaria infections. A 51-year-old Thai female presented with migratory subcutaneous nodules on her left arm. Initially misdiagnosed as cellulitis, she received empirical antibiotics, showing only partial improvement, and subsequently developed new nodules. A skin biopsy revealed nematode segments, and molecular identification c

We describe a case of imported ocular dirofilariasis in Australia, linked to the Hong Kong genotype of Dirofilaria sp., in a migrant from Sri Lanka. Surgical extraction and mitochondrial sequences analyses confirmed this filarioid nematode as the causative agent and a Dirofilaria sp. not previously reported in Australia.

Dirofilariasis is a worldwide zoonotic filariasis. Human dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infection most commonly caused by Dirofilariarepens. Dirofilariasis, caused by Dirofilaria repens, has been reported to occur widely throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa. It has not been widely recognized in India; however, several cases have been reported in the last few years. Ease and frequency of international travel has probably contributed to the increase in the number of cases. There is probably a focus of human infection with D. repens in Kerala, India. We report a case of ocular dirofilariasis, from t

Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic disease caused commonly by Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitus. The definitive hosts are domestic dogs and cats. Human beings are accidental dead end hosts, and acquire infestation through mosquito bites. So far, very few cases have been reported from western India. We report a case of a 27-year-old male who presented with preseptal cellulitis right eye and a firm mass in the lower lid. Histopathological examination after surgical excision of the mass revealed a diagnosis of dirofilariasis. Although rare in Western India a diagnosis of dirofilariasis should

We report the case of a 6-year-old female who presented a cervical intradural extra-spinal tumor, initially considered as a Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Additional histological slides revealed a Dirofilaria repens dirofilariasis. The particularity of this case is the intradural location of this filariasis, which usually has a subcutaneous or conjunctival location in human.

Human dirofilariasis is a rare zoonotic infection caused by various filarial species of the genus Dirofilaria. Dirofilaria tenuis causes heartworm infection in raccoons and infrequently causes human disease. The Dirofilaria organism accidentally is transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito and subcutaneous nodules, coin lesions of the lungs, or ophthalmic lesions develop at the inoculation site. We report a rare case of D tenuis infection in a patient that manifested as a subcutaneous nodule.

Dirofilariasis is a rare infection caused by a vector-borne nematode that can be accidentally transmitted to humans. We report a case of a 11-year-old child with a painless scrotal cyst caused by Dirofilaria repens , initially suspected by ultrasound scan and then confirmed by histopathologic examination.

Dirofilariosis is an endemic filarial parasitic disease in the Mediterranean basin, unfamiliar in France. Its incidence and geographic area are increasing due to global warming. Dogs and cats are the usual hosts, but humans may be accidentally infected. We reported the 91st case of French dirofilariosis, contracted in Camargue (South France) which appeared as a subcutaneous abdominal nodule. Ultrasound strongly guided the diagnosis by showing a linear structure moving in a fibrocystic structure. Surgical excision confirmed the diagnosis of species (Dirofilaria repens) and this remains the only

Dirofilariasis is a zoonosis affecting dogs and cats. It was transmitted to man by mosquito bites. Human dirofilariasis is rare. We report a case of 4-year-old girl presented with a subcutaneous palmar nodule of the hand. Surgical excision shows a nodule encircling the forth flexor tendon. The histological examination established the diagnosis by the presence of an adult worm identified as Dirofilaria repens. Surgical excision was curative.

Infection with the intravascular parasite Dirofilaria immitis is an increasingly recognized problem in domestic dogs and cats. Heartworm infection is preventable; however, once an animal is infected, heartworm disease and potentially life-threatening complications can develop. An understanding of the heartworm life cycle and transmission season, the limitations of testing methods, and the clinical signs of heartworm disease is necessary to provide clients with appropriate information regarding prevention and treatment of heartworm infection in their pets.

In this paper the first cases of human dirofilariasis in Poland are presented. The clinical manifestations were typical subcutaneous nodules with the adult worm (D. repens) in the center. Past medical history of the 5 patients revealed their trips to endemic countries, so the imported infection was considered. However 2 of these cases were difficult to interpret. It is unclear whether the infections should be considered endemic or imported, because of patients' short visits abroad which happened long time (10 years) ago.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous dirofilariasis is zoonotic infection caused by Dirofilaria repens, the principal reservoir of which is the dog. Clinical expression is usually benign but problems of differential diagnosis are present in some cases. We report the first case of dirofilariasis diagnosed in our area (Sfax, southern Tunisia).
OBSERVATION: A 21 year-old woman consulted for multiple erythematous and pruriginous papules on the shoulders, limbs and buttocks. She was treated with antihistamines and dermatological topical steroids without improvement. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological

The etiologic agents of human dirofilariasis in the Old World are Dirofilaria immitis, which cause pulmonary and subcutaneous nodules, and Dirofilaria repens, which cause ocular lesions. Although reports of new cases of dirofilariasis are sporadic in other parts of the world, a considerable amount of information is generated in Europe regarding human dirofilariasis. Most cases have been detected in the Mediterranean countries, Ukraine, and Russia; however, isolated or short series of cases have been reported in the Balkan Republics and central and northern European countries. Seroepidemiologic

Pulmonary dirofilariasis is a rare entity caused by Dirofilaria, a dog worm that is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. The filarial nematode enters the subcutaneous tissue, travels to the right ventricle, dies and then embolizes the pulmonary vessels causing a small pulmonary infarction, which subsequently appears as a solitary nodule. Although these nodules are usually identified incidentally by chest radiography in asymptomatic patients, the lesion is generally presumed to be neoplastic. Diagnosis is made by surgical excision. Awareness of this benign entity is important in the differentia

Nine new cases of human Dirofilariasis by Dirofilaria repens, in subjects living in Apulia, aged 30 to 60 years, are reported. Six were subcutaneous and three subconjunctival. Many of them occurred a number of years ago and were identified thanks to a specific joint investigation carried out by a parasitologist, some histopathologists and ophthalmologists. Of special relevance is one subcutaneous case with contemporary presence of 2 nodules in different regions of the body (mamma and forearm) and another subconjuctival case with strong inflammatory reaction (episcleritis, chemosis, orbital cel

Dirofilaria repens (D. repens)is an emerging zoonotic filarial parasite, increasingly implicated in human subcutaneous infections. While commonly presenting as solitary nodules in the ocular or facial regions, involvement of atypical anatomical sites remains rare and diagnostically challenging. We report a case of subcutaneous cervical D. repens infection in a 50-year-old woman from Greece with no history of travel or contact with animals. The patient presented with a firm, non-tender nodule over the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Ultrasound revealed a hypoechoic lesion with soft tissue involveme

Human dirofilariasis is a rare anthropo-zoonotic disease, mainly detected in Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, and Sri Lanka. An increasing number of autochthonous Dirofilaria spp. infections has been recently reported in the areas previously considered free of the disease, including northern Europe and the Baltic States. A rare autochthonous case of scrotal dirofilariasis detected in Lithuania was described. Here, a 42-year-old male presented with a 1 cm nodule, limited in the scrotum. A nodule excision was performed. On histological examination, a degenerating roundworm
