Periodicity pitch perception of retarded children.

In order to expand the body of information concerning auditory function in the presence of the generalized cortical dysfunction associated with severe mental retardation, the discrimination of periodicity pitch signals by nonverbal severely retarded children and adults of normal intelligence was examined using an operant conditioning adaptation of the psychophysical method of constant stimulus differences. The periodicity pitch difference limens (DLs) based on changes in repetition rate were compared with frequency DLs obtained from low (150 Hz) and high frequency (2200 Hz) sinusoids. Periodic

A non-discriminatory response to disability related problem behaviour at Australian universities.

When students with a psychological disorder study at university, there are competing goals and challenges faced by administrators, teaching staff and students. Positive goals such as inclusion, self-determination and respect for diversity are sometimes counterbalanced by problem behaviour associated with mental illness. The challenge for tertiary institutions is to accommodate the educational needs of students with a psychological disorder, without undermining the inherent requirements of a course of academic study, or the duties that a university owes to staff and students with respect to saf

Are multiple choice tests fair to medical students with specific learning disabilities?

The purpose of multiple choice tests of medical knowledge is to estimate as accurately as possible a candidate's level of knowledge. However, concern is sometimes expressed that multiple choice tests may also discriminate in undesirable and irrelevant ways, such as between minority ethnic groups or by sex of candidates. There is little literature to establish whether multiple choice tests may also discriminate against students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs), in particular those with a diagnosis of dyslexia, and whether the commonly-used accommodations allow such students to perform

Effects of modified orthography on the identification of printed words.

Research has shown that instructional methods involving pairing pictures with print interfere with identification of written words. Preliminary evidence, however, indicates that use of modified orthography (where a line drawing is superimposed upon the printed word) may be effective for reading instruction with individuals who have mental retardation. In the present study, we used a single-subject parallel treatments design with 4 adults who had moderate to severe mental retardation. They received reading instruction under two conditions--traditional and modified orthography. Results showed th

Performance of institutional retardates on standard and new forms of the Quick Test.

121 institutionalized mentally retarded patients were tested on Forms 1-3 and 4-6 of the Quick Test; IQs were correlated with other IQs available from institution records. The forms of the Quick Test correlated significantly with the more traditional and time-consuming tests of intellectual performance. It was concluded that the Quick Test is an excellent tool for experimenters and educators who need an efficient and reliable estimate of intellectual development.

Cereblon-related mild intellectual disability disrupts response inhibition and uniformity of group-individual strategies.

Temporal processing, including duration discrimination, is essential for survival and communication across species. Intellectual disability (ID), which can arise from diverse causes, including mutation in Cereblon (CRBN) gene, impairs duration discrimination. CRBN-related ID is associated with abnormal cognitive behaviors and may disrupt both perceptual and behavioral processes involved in duration discrimination. However, cross-species behavioral strategies, their variation with ID, and the behavioral indices underlying these strategies remain unclear. Here, humans and wild-type (WT) mice wit

Group differences and individual classification accuracy associated with letter/word oddity problems.

The ability of 27 pairs of mildly mentally retarded and normally achieving 6- through 8-year-old students to apply an oddity rule to an experimental set of letter and word oddity problems was assessed. The mildly retarded group evidenced a markedly lower level of performance on all five experimental oddity problems, but they did evidence successful generalization to oddity arrays that visually were very different from those used in training. High levels (greater than 90%) of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive accuracy, and negative predictive accuracy were observed using only six ca

Age discrimination in critical care triage in South Africa: The law and the allocation of scarce health resources in the COVID-19 pandemic.

No one may be refused emergency medical treatment in South Africa (SA). Yet score-based categorical exclusions used in critical care triage guidelines disproportionately discriminate against older adults, the cognitively and physically impaired, and the disabled. Adults over the age of 60, who make up 9.1% of the SA population, are most likely to present with disabilities and comorbidities at triage. Score-based models, drawn from international precedents, deny these patients admission to an ICU when resources are constrained, such as during influenza and COVID-19 outbreaks. The Critical Care

Correlates of discrimination and vigilance severity profiles in a national United States sample.

BACKGROUND: There are long-standing disparities in discrimination and hypervigilance, however there is no research exploring correlates of different severity profiles using a national U.S. SAMPLE: We identified patterns in discrimination and vigilance, and examined sociodemographic, health, and geographic factors associated with severity. METHODS: Data was retrieved from 28,202 individuals in the 2023 National Health Interview Survey, a nationally representative U.S. sample of adults aged 18+. Respondents completed the Everyday Discrimination Scale and Heightened Vigilance Scale, and a laten

Risk prediction models for hospitalization-associated disability among older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization-associated disability is a significant adverse outcome in older adults, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased healthcare burden. Although several risk prediction models have been developed to identify hospitalization-associated disability, their quality, risk of bias and clinical applicability remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To systematic review existing evidence on risk prediction models for hospitalization-associated disability among older adults. METHODS: Eight databases were searched from inception to October 15, 2025. Data from the included studies we

Psychometric properties of quick disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand questionnaire among people with carpal tunnel syndrome: item response theory analysis.

The objective of this retrospective cross-sectional register-based study among 1597 patients with electromyography-confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the quick disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand questionnaire (QuickDASH). Two-parameter item response theory analysis with a rating scale model was applied. Of the respondents, 896 (56%) were women. The average age was 55.0 (SD: 16.3) years. Mean QuickDASH score was 38.0 (SD: 23.2%) points. For difficulty parameter estimates, some items demonstrated a slight shift to the right toward highe

Albinism and human rights: From marginalisation to global advocacy.

BACKGROUND: Persons with albinism (PWAs) face significant biological, social and structural challenges, particularly in Africa, where entrenched cultural myths and systemic discrimination expose them to violence, stigma and exclusion. Despite increasing recognition of albinism as a disability under international human rights frameworks, PWAs remain marginalised across multiple domains. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the historical and contemporary experiences of PWAs, tracing the trajectory from marginalisation to advocacy. It seeks to contextualise persistent discrimination, analyse the eme
