A new disaster victim identification management strategy targeting "near identification-threshold" cases: Experiences from the Boxing Day tsunami.

The international disaster victim identification (DVI) response to the Boxing Day tsunami, led by the Royal Thai Police in Phuket, Thailand, was one of the largest and most complex in DVI history. Referred to as the Thai Tsunami Victim Identification operation, the group comprised a multi-national, multi-agency, and multi-disciplinary team. The traditional DVI approach proved successful in identifying a large number of victims quickly. However, the team struggled to identify certain victims due to incomplete or poor quality ante-mortem and post-mortem data. In response to these challenges, a n

[Disaster psychiatry in late life].

Disaster preparedness in geriatric psychiatry was proposed on the basis of experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake. 1) Frail or demented elderly should be considered as a special population at risk for disaster victims and addressed in local disaster prevention programs. 2) To response to various psychiatric symptoms(delirium, BPSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and posttraumatic stress disorder) caused by medical conditions and rapid environmental changes due to disaster, linkage and coordination systems between psychiatric and medical sections should be established. 3) As a medium- an

[Guidelines in mass disaster victims identification through the Tsunami experience (December 26, 2004)].

The adequate management of a victim's identification must go through an essential rigour in the applied methodology. This is all the more necessary when you face a mass disaster such as the Tsunami of December 26, 2004. We will explain in this presentation how the DVI Belgian Team, in close collaboration with the other International Teams, proceeded in January 2005, adopting real guidelines, in strict accordance with the Interpol fixed ones. We will review the various stages of our work, paying special attention to the fingerprints, the examination of clothes, jewels and specific objects, but

[Identification of cadavers in the Netherlands].

The identification of cadavers of unknown persons is important from a humanitarian point of view but also for legal reasons and in connection with insurance. Various identification techniques are available today, such as fingerprinting, DNA profiling and the comparison of dental structures. Not all methods of identification are equally useful in practice and the ultimate identification is often made possible only by a combination of several techniques. Sometimes, the identification procedure cannot be completed successfully because one has no idea whatsoever who it might be and there is theref

Data-driven disaster management requires data: implementation of a military orthopaedic trauma registry.

The Military Orthopaedic Trauma Registry (MOTR) is a comprehensive joint service registry of military orthopaedic injuries. Conceived in 2006, MOTR is now operational for retrospective data entry and prospective data collection of extremity injuries sustained by U.S. service members serving in current Overseas Contingency Operations. Running in tandem with data from the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research's Joint Theater Trauma Registry (JTTR), MOTR augments the casualty data included in JTTR with additional orthopaedic specific data (i.e., the injury patterns, characteristics, t

History of medicine: the metamorphosis of scientific medicine in the ever-present past.

Hippocrates (460-370 BCE), the father of medicine, developed principles for medical diagnosis and treatment together with a code of ethics. When the first Ptolemy ruled Egypt, he created a great library of 700,000 rolls at Alexandria, which became a repository for the works of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, and all the writings of the known world, but it was destroyed by a great fire. Galen of Pergamum (129-216), who lived 500 years after Hippocrates, was well educated and studied anatomy, surgery, drugs and Hippocratic medicine. His ideas influenced medical thinking for the next 150

Response to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone.

The Ebola outbreak in 2014 marked the first time that an epidemic of this viral haemorrhagic fever had occurred in West Africa. From its origin in Guinea, the outbreak rapidly increased to become a humanitarian crisis affecting all aspects of life in the three countries worst affected: Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Improving understanding of Ebola virus disease among the general population and instigating the behavioural changes required to help break the epidemic were central to the public health response. This article explores some of the misconceptions about Ebola as it spread into Sier

The academic health center in complex humanitarian emergencies: lessons learned from the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. The event disrupted infrastructure and was marked by extreme morbidity and mortality. The global response to the disaster was rapid and immense, comprising multiple actors-including academic health centers (AHCs)-that provided assistance in the field and from home. The authors retrospectively examine the multidisciplinary approach that the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) applied to postearthquake Haiti, which included the application of institutional structure and strategy, systematic deployment of teams tailored to evolving ne
