Practice-Oriented Model of Mutual Resonance in Collective Trauma: Music Therapists Amid War.

Collective trauma refers to psychological and emotional consequences experienced by communities exposed to large-scale traumatic events such as war. Civilians under constant threat endure instability, displacement, and loss, facing significant psychological distress. Music therapists in such contexts hold unique positions, providing therapeutic care while simultaneously experiencing the same traumatic reality as citizens. Despite extensive literature on the mental health impact of war, music therapists' lived experiences during active conflict remain underexplored. This study explored experien

Post-traumatic growth in refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Globally, millions of people are forced to flee their home nation due to war, conflict, political instability, natural disasters or persecution every year. The detrimental psychological issues that refugees experience are well established, whilst research on positive psychological well-being, such as Post-Traumatic Growth, is limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesise the peer-reviewed literature which quantitatively measured PTG in refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and present factors associated with PTG in this population. Methods: The fol

A Simulation Platform Combining The Myokinetic Interface With The Ami Surgery For Prosthetic Control.

Amputations of the upper and lower limbs can significantly impact psychological well-being and functional independence, limiting a person's ability to perform daily tasks. Artificial limbs aim to restore lost functionality by replicating the natural limb as closely as possible. To this aim, the ideal human-machine interface (HMI) should provide seamless connection with the natural sources of control and sensory feedback. Recent advances in surgical techniques and prosthetic technologies have enhanced residual limb functionality and enabled direct connections with peripheral neural pathways. Th

Mental health, psychological wellbeing, and coping with stress by Ukrainian war refugees staying in Poland.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict has led to the large-scale displacement of over one million Ukrainian citizens, predominantly women and children, seeking protection in Poland. This necessitates a rigorous investigation into the factors associated with psychological conditions and adaptive coping mechanisms employed by this vulnerable population. METHODS: This quantitative, online survey study comprised a sample of N = 290 adult participants (91.7% female, mean age 43.6 years). Due to the small number of male participants (n = 24, 8.3%), gender was not included as a variable

Sleep as a Component of Health in Areas of Armed Conflict and Disaster.

Sleep is a vital physiological and psychological process essential for overall health and well-being, yet it is often severely disrupted in areas affected by armed conflict and disasters. In these environments, civilians frequently become internally displaced or refugees, experiencing fragmented or reduced sleep due to factors such as constant noise from drones and airstrikes, overcrowded shelters, and pervasive fear for personal safety. These sleep disturbances, including but not limited to insomnia and nightmares, are not merely secondary effects of a conflict or disaster but can also exacer

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Moral Injury Among Ukrainian Civilians During the Ongoing War.

While severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and moral injury among civilians affected by armed conflicts is generally understudied, even less research exists on civilian populations during an active war. This paper reports a large-scale study that administered standard assessments of PTSD and moral injury severity, as well as rich demographic questionnaires, to nearly 1300 Ukrainian civilians during the ongoing Russian invasion. Analyses revealed an extremely high prevalence of severe PTSD symptoms and moral injury, relative to both proposed clinical cut-offs and to earlie

Prevalence and predictors of food insecurity in conflict zones among displaced families in Lebanon during the war: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The September-December 2024 conflict in Lebanon resulted in the displacement of over 1.5 million individuals, compounding the country's existing economic and humanitarian crises. This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence and predictors of food insecurity (FI) among displaced families, focusing on key socioeconomic and psychological determinants. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 400 displaced households across Lebanon. Data were collected on demographics, food security (Arab Family Food Security Scale), malnutrition (MUAC), income, education, household si

Digital engagement and adolescent wellbeing: insights from the UK millennium cohort study.

Existing research on screen time and adolescent psychological wellbeing often overlooks how digital engagement interacts with other daily activities. Uncertainty remains about which activities are complemented or displaced by digital use, and whether specific combinations of activities are beneficial or detrimental to wellbeing. We used detailed time-use diary data from 3,288 participants in the UK Millennium Cohort Study, collected during the age-14 survey. Adolescents recorded their activities in 144 consecutive 10-min slots over a 24‑h period, selecting from 44 pre-specified activity types.

Mothers on the Frontline: The Crisis of Maternal Health in Conflict-Torn Sudan.

The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has had devastating effects on maternal health services across the country. More than 1.1 million pregnant women are now in urgent need of medical care as health care infrastructure crumbles under the strain of violence. Hospitals and health centers have been destroyed or rendered inaccessible, and shortages of medical supplies and the widespread loss of health care workers have left many women without access to essential maternal services, including antenatal care, safe delivery assistance, and postnatal care. Consequently, count

Gender differences in traumatic life events, coping strategies, perceived social support and sociodemographics among postconflict displaced persons in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Towards the end of civil war in Ethiopia leading to Eritrea's independent government in 1991, a large number of persons were displaced from their homes in Eritrea, to reside in shelters in Addis Ababa. We evaluate trauma, coping, social support and sociodemographics among them particularly in relation to gender. METHODS: From each randomly selected household in these shelters, a subject was interviewed, yielding 1200 subjects in all. RESULTS: Men, compared to women, reported significantly higher physical abuse during childhood in the family, traumatic childhood life events, exper

Healthcare provision for displaced people in transit: Analyses of routinely collected data from INTERSOS clinics at the Ukrainian border with Moldova and Poland.

BACKGROUND: The Russian military invasion of Ukraine has sparked Europe's largest forced displacement since World War II, bringing about significant health vulnerabilities for migrants and refugees. European health information systems lack comprehensive data coverage, especially in underrepresented migration stages like transit. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing data from INTERSOS clinics at the Moldovan and Polish borders with Ukraine to identify the common health conditions prompting people to seek healthcare services during transit. METHODS: From 6th March to 31st May 2022,

From active escapism to virtual withdrawal: Validation of the Compensatory-Dissociative Online Gaming scales (C-DOGs).

BACKGROUND: In the Compensatory-Dissociative Online Gaming (C-DOG; Giardina et al., 2024) model, we proposed a continuum from compensatory to dissociative gaming involvement. This continuum represents different degrees of integration between physical and virtual environments with three core processes - Active Escapism, Escape, and Dissociation - and two peripheral processes - Gaming-Related Relaxation and Body-Mind Detachment. Here, we developed and tested a multidimensional measure based on this model. METHOD: We capitalized on existing items for measuring escapism and dissociation and we ge

Eating disorders across two cultures: does the expression of psychological control vary?

OBJECTIVE: Because both the expression of eating disorder (ED) symptoms and preferred psychological control styles may be affected by culture, the purpose of the present study was to examine whether the expression of psychological control in women with EDs varies across two cultures. METHOD: North European Australian and Chinese Singaporean women (n = 117) with anorexia nervosa (n = 36), bulimia nervosa (n = 13) and eating disorders not otherwise specified (n = 3), and without an ED (n = 65) recruited in Australia and Singapore completed a multidimensional inventory assessing sense of control

Artificial intelligence at work: Balancing opportunity and fear in shaping employee well-being in the IT sector.

BackgroundThis study investigates the complex relationship between perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities and well-being, exploring the underlying psychological processes. Using conservation of resources theory, we examine how employees who view AI as an opportunity report better workplace well-being and show greater adaptive thinking capacity. Conversely, perceptions of unemployment risk appear to be linked to challenges in cognitive reappraisal, which, in turn, correlate with diminished well-being.ObjectiveTo assess the relationships among these constructs, including the s

N95 masks increase brain blood velocity and parasympathetic outflow, yet worsen orthostatic symptoms in a healthy cohort.

Mask wearing became commonplace in everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic and masks are frequently used in certain professions. Masks can increase end-tidal CO2 and the cerebrovasculature is known to vasodilate in response to hypercapnia. Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is the inability to tolerate postural transitions due to the displacement of blood volume away from the cerebral circulation, and we hypothesized that wearing a mask would improve OI symptoms by increasing brain blood flow. Young, healthy participants (n = 27) completed 10 min of 70° head-up tilt while wearing/not wearing an N
