Study on intervention effect of Wearable Cyborg HAL through narrative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The medical effectiveness of Cybernics Treatment with the Wearable Cyborg HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) has been verified, and its treatment method has started to be used in many countries around the world. However, the focus of medical evaluations has predominantly been on simple measurement evaluation of physical function, while Patient Reported Outcome (PRO), which encompass various evaluation axes of patients, remain largely unexplored. The mental/psychological field has the potential to develop cutting-edge fields targeting individuals. As the social implementation of HAL progre

Increased rate of ptosis following glaucoma drainage device placement and other anterior segment surgery: a prospective analysis.

PURPOSE: To determine the degree and rate of ptosis in patients undergoing glaucoma and cataract surgery. METHODS: Patients undergoing cataract extraction (CE), trabeculectomy, or glaucoma drainage device (GDD) placement, or a combination, were consecutively enrolled by a sole surgeon. Eyelid measurements, including margin reflex distance 1 (MRD1) and levator function, were obtained preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Primary outcome measures were the change in MRD1 pre- vs postoperatively; percentage of patients with ptosis (defined as MRD1 < 2 mm pre- vs postoperatively).

Anterior Palpability and Proptosis as Clinical Predictors of Ptosis in Lacrimal Gland Tumors.

This study aimed to develop clinical prediction models for pretreatment and posttreatment ptosis in patients with lacrimal gland tumors using readily available examination findings. This retrospective study included 26 patients who underwent surgery for unilateral lacrimal gland tumors. Linear regression models were constructed to predict (1) pretreatment margin reflex distance-1 (MRD-1) difference between the affected and unaffected sides and (2) the change in MRD-1 after treatment (ΔMRD-1), using anterior palpability and pretreatment proptosis difference as candidate predictors. The optimal

Anoscrotal distance and urogenital anomalies in ART-conceived male infants: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is widely used, yet potential effects on androgen-sensitive male genital development remain a concern. Anoscrotal distance (ASD), a validated marker of prenatal androgen exposure, may differ in ART-conceived infants. This study compared ASD and urogenital anomalies among male newborns conceived via frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) using natural-cycle (tNC) or hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) protocols versus natural conception (NC). METHODS: In this retrospective cohort of 432 singleton male births (156 NC, 132 FET-tNC, 144 FET-HRT) deliv

A qualitative study of parents' experiences with receiving a prenatal diagnosis of confined placental mosaicism - "We had nothing to rely on, you know?".

Prenatal detection of mosaicism in chorionic villus sampling (CVS) poses significant challenges for genetic counseling due to difficulties in predicting fetal involvement and clinical outcomes. Even when mosaicism is confined to the placenta (CPM), there remains an elevated risk of adverse outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. These uncertainties regarding diagnosis and prognosis complicate clinical decision-making and may have a profound psychological impact on expectant parents. Thus, this qualitative study aimed to explore how parents experience the diagnosis and navigate

Premium Intraocular Lens Selection in Patients With Glaucoma: A Clinical Review.

Glaucoma frequently coexists with cataract, but glaucomatous functional loss, ocular-surface disease, anatomical abnormalities, and treatment-related refractive variability may reduce tolerance of premium intraocular lenses. This narrative review critically appraises evidence relevant to lens selection in glaucoma. Central visual-field status, contrast sensitivity, fixation, disease stability, anterior-segment anatomy, intraocular pressure control, topical treatment, previous or anticipated glaucoma surgery, and lifetime progression risk should inform decision-making. Enhanced monofocal lenses

F8 and F9 mutations fail to co-segregate in a family with co-incident haemophilia A and B.

Haemophilia A and B in one individual may arise from co-incident inheritance of independent mutations in the F8 and F9 genes. However, this association is rare and has been studied poorly at a genetic level. We report a male patient with abnormal bleeding and reduced factor VIII:C (26 IU dL(-1)) and factor IX:C (35 IU dL(-1)). This index case harboured a F8 c.979C>G transversion (predictive of p.Leu327Val) and a F9 c.845A>G transition (predictive of p.His282Arg) which have been previously associated with mild haemophilia A and B, respectively. Identical F8 and F9 mutations were identified in t

Visual-field measurements and driving eligibility.

BACKGROUND: A 50-year-old black man with an ocular history of open-angle glaucoma was seen for a vision rehabilitation examination, with goals of improving his vision for work and determining his eligibility for driving. He was referred to the clinic through state services for the visually impaired. METHODS: A low-vision evaluation was performed and baseline information was obtained, including distance- and near-visual acuities, visual fields, and subjective refraction. This information was used to determine if he was eligible for services and if any low-vision devices would benefit him. RES

[Randomized field study of the etiology of strabismus concomitans].

After an introduction to the problems of binocular vision and an overview of the literature, the authors report on the reasons for undertaking this study and on its practical implications. Up to now, no other randomized study has been undertaken to our knowledge on children of this age group in such a large city as Vienna. All children in primary 3 classes in 20 out of the 256 elementary schools were examined ophthalmologically and orthoptically. It was found that hereditary factors are of statistically significant importance. Especially important for the ophthalmologist is also the statistica

Surgical Outcomes of Intermittent Exotropia in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Adult intermittent exotropia (IXT) is less well studied than paediatric IXT, yet counselling is challenging due to postoperative exodrift, diplopia risk, and differing functional expectations. This systematic review synthesised surgical outcomes for adult (≥18 years) IXT. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020-guided systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE was performed using two searches ("surgical" AND "outcomes" AND "exotropia"; "surgery" AND "intermittent exotropia"), limited to English-language human studies published within the last 10 years. Comparison of Five Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses: Optical-Bench Assessment with Visual-Quality Simulation.

Presbyopia correction through implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) is a modality offered to both cataract and refractive-lens exchange patients. To maximize postoperative satisfaction, IOL selection needs to be made based on patients' requirements aligned with the available technology. Five Trifocal IOLs were assessed in this study, and their differentiating features were identified: Triumf POD L GF, AT Lisa Tri, Tecnis Synergy, AcrySof IQ PanOptix, and Acriva Trinova Pro C. The optical quality was assessed using the modulation-transfer-function principle. Simulated defocus curves

Volume perimetry: measurement in depth of visual field loss.

PURPOSE: Volume scotomas are three-dimensional regions of space that are not visible to the observer. Volume perimetry maps volume scotomas. Volume scotomas predicted from combining monocular visual fields assume known fixation locus (mainly foveal). However, fixation loci are not always known, especially with central field loss (CFL). Here we demonstrate methods for measuring and calculating volume scotomas and discuss their practical implications. METHODS: Three patients (bitemporal hemianopia, binasal scotoma, and CFL) were evaluated. Slices through the volume scotomas were measured at thr

Biomarker-integrated machine learning models for predicting treatment-related bowel dysfunction after rectal cancer surgery: a multicenter development and external validation study.

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a prevalent treatment-related complication following sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer that severely impairs survivors' quality of life. In the era of biomarker-driven personalized cancer therapy, reliable tools integrating clinicopathological biomarkers for individualized risk stratification remain lacking. Machine learning (ML) approaches offer the potential to integrate heterogeneous biomarkers-including nutritional, inflammatory, and treatment-related indicators-for precision prediction, yet their comparative performance ag

A cross-sectional analysis of factors associated with detection of oncogenic human papillomavirus in human immunodeficiency virus-infected and uninfected Kenyan women.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV) and is one of the most common malignancies in women living in sub-Saharan Africa. Women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a higher incidence of cervical cancer, but the full impact on HPV detection is not well understood, and associations of biological and behavioral factors with oncogenic HPV detection have not been fully examined. Therefore, a study was initiated to investigate factors that are associated with oncogenic HPV detection in Kenyan women. METHODS: Women without cervical dyspla

Comparative effectiveness of toric IOLs and LRIs for correction of moderate regular astigmatism during phacoemulsification.

Corneal astigmatism frequently coexists with age-related cataract and may impair uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) if not addressed during surgery. Limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) and toric intraocular lenses (toric IOL) are two common methods for astigmatism correction, but evidence comparing their effectiveness in patients with moderate regular astigmatism remains limited. A prospective study was conducted at Yuyao Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital between January and December 2024. Ninety-three patients aged 55-80 years with moderate regular corneal astigmatism undergoing cat
