Robust federated learning for UAV object detection: a joint self-distillation and drift compensation approach.

The rapid advancement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in disaster response and environmental monitoring has underscored the growing importance of real-time object detection within UAV swarm networks. However, the non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) characteristics of data in UAV networks present significant challenges to model convergence and adaptability. To tackle these challenges, this study introduces a robust federated UAV object detection framework tailored for non-IID data distributions. The framework aims to enhance adaptability across clients, thereby improving bo

UINO-FSS: Unifying Representation Learning and Few-Shot Segmentation via Hierarchical Distillation and Mamba-HyperCorrelation.

Few-shot semantic segmentation has attracted growing interest for its ability to generalize to novel object categories using only a few annotated samples. To address data scarcity, recent methods incorporate multiple foundation models to improve feature transferability and segmentation performance. However, they often rely on dual-branch architectures that combine pre-trained encoders to leverage complementary strengths, a design that limits flexibility and efficiency. This raises a fundamental question: "can we build a unified model that integrates knowledge from different foundation architec

No modality left behind: Adapting to missing modalities via knowledge distillation for brain tumor segmentation.

Accurate brain tumor segmentation is essential for preoperative evaluation and personalized treatment. Multi-modal MRI is widely used due to its ability to capture complementary tumor features across different sequences. However, in clinical practice, missing modalities are common, limiting the robustness and generalizability of existing deep learning methods that rely on complete inputs, especially under non-dominant modality combinations. To address this, we propose AdaMM, a multi-modal brain tumor segmentation framework tailored for missing-modality scenarios, centered on knowledge distilla

FedMal-XAI: an explainable federated vision transformer leveraging knowledge distillation for privacy-preserving malaria detection.

Plasmodium parasites are the cause of malaria, a deadly illness that continues to pose a serious danger to world health, especially in areas with low resources where subjectivity, complexity, along with privacy issues make it difficult to employ traditional diagnostic techniques like microscopy and quick diagnostic testing. To overcome these specific challenges of diagnostic subjectivity, logistical complexity, and data privacy, this paper suggests a privacy-preserving federated learning system that uses sophisticated Vision Transformers (ViTs) for automated malaria identification from blood s

A Lightweight Edge-Deployable Framework for Intelligent Rice Disease Monitoring Based on Pruning and Distillation.

Digital agriculture and smart farming require crop health monitoring methods that balance detection accuracy with computational cost. Rice leaf diseases threaten yield, while field images often contain small multi-scale lesions, variable illumination and cluttered backgrounds. This paper investigates SCD-YOLOv11n, a lightweight detector designed with these constraints in mind. The model replaces the YOLOv11n backbone with a StarNet backbone and integrates a C3k2-Star module to enhance fine-grained, multi-scale feature extraction. A Detail-Strengthened Cross-scale Detection (DSCD) head is furth

Characterization of Bioactive Phenolic Compounds Extracted from Hydro-Distillation By-Products of Spanish Lamiaceae Plants.

Plants of the Lamiaceae family are widely used for the extraction of essential oils, and this industry generates a large number of solid residues as by-products, which contain non-volatile valuable compounds. The aim of this work was to identify and quantify the phenolic compounds present in these solid residues from different important Spanish species of Lamiaceae to characterize and valorize them. Forty-seven phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC-DAD-MS and quantified by HPLC-DAD. Different concentrations and types of phenolic compounds were found between the solid residues. The Rosmari

Behaviour, use and safety aspects of astatine-211 solvated in chloroform after dry distillation recovery.

Targeted alpha therapy of disseminated cancer is an emerging technique where astatine-211 is one of the most promising candidate nuclides. Astatine-211 can be produced in medium energy cyclotrons by alpha particle bombardment of natural bismuth. The produced astatine is then commonly recovered from the irradiated solid target material through dry distillation. The dry distillation process often includes elution and solvation of condensed astatine with chloroform, forming Chloroform Eluate. In this work the handling and safe use of the high activity concentration Chloroform Eluate has been inve

Synergic Adversarial Label Learning for Grading Retinal Diseases via Knowledge Distillation and Multi-Task Learning.

The need for comprehensive and automated screening methods for retinal image classification has long been recognized. Well-qualified doctors annotated images are very expensive and only a limited amount of data is available for various retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Some studies show that some retinal diseases such as DR and AMD share some common features like haemorrhages and exudation but most classification algorithms only train those disease models independently when the only single label for one image is available. Recycling Polymeric Solid Wastes for Energy-Efficient Water Purification, Organic Distillation, and Oil Spill Cleanup.

Conventional approaches (e.g., pyrolysis) for managing waste polymer foams typically require highly technical skills and consume large amounts of energy resources. This paper presents an ultrafacile, cost-effective, and highly efficient alternative method for recycling waste packaging and cleaning foam (e.g., polymelamine-formaldehyde foam). The designed solar absorber, a polypyrrole-coated melamine foam (PMF), features a highly porous structure, excellent mechanical strength, low thermal conductivity, and rapid water transport capacity. These exceptional properties render the PMF suitable for

Improving RSVP EEG Decoding Performance under Auditory Perturbation: A Dual-View Model with Robust Distillation.

OBJECTIVE: Decoding event-related potentials (ERPs) from Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) EEG offers a promising approach for target recognition in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, auditory noise in real-world environments degrades target-ERP decoding, substantially reducing accuracy and robustness. METHODS: We propose a novel time-frequency dual-view network (TFDV-Net) with temporal and time-frequency branches. Cross-view global features guide local feature extraction to fully exploit complementary information in both views and obtain a more complete representation of task-r

From Symptomatic to Pre-Symptomatic: Adaptive Knowledge Distillation for Early Alzheimer's Detection Using Functional MRI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses from asymptomatic changes to clinical symptoms, underscoring the critical need for early detection to facilitate timely treatment. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers non-invasive biomarkers for detection, but current methods fail to reliably identify pre-symptomatic individuals due to two key challenges: (1) Subtle, anatomically distinct fMRI patterns in pre-symptomatic cases that resemble healthy controls more than symptomatic patients, and (2) Severe class imbalance in real-world data, where healthy controls vastly outnumber pre-symptomati

Tsmd-net: two-stage multi-domain distillation network for cross-subject MI-EEG domain generalization.

Motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) decoding enables brain-computer interface (BCI) systems to convert self-generated motor intentions into external control commands. However, inter-subject variability and EEG non-stationarity cause distribution shifts that limit the cross-subject generalization of existing decoding models. Although existing domain generalization methods can learn shared representations without target-subject data during training, they mostly rely on feature alignment or data augmentation and insufficiently exploit complementary discriminative knowledge among source

Unlocking the mechanism of nanocatalytic Fenton oxidation and membrane distillation for efficient produced water treatment.

Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for desalinating saline wastewater, but its efficiency is constrained by membrane fouling and wetting. To elucidate the role of nanocatalytic Fenton oxidation in enhancing MD performance for hydraulic fracturing produced water (HFPW) treatment, this study employs hydrolyzed aluminum and iron nanoparticles as active catalysts, with commercial Cu2O included as a benchmark. The three oxidative pretreatment methods increased the normalized flux from 0.46 to over 0.85. Under optimal conditions, Fe-based Fenton achieved removal rates of 67.86 % (U

Cross-lingual sparse-MoE distillation for efficient low-resource assamese-english and bodo-english translation.

Neural machine translation (NMT) for low-resource languages such as Assamese and Bodo has seen dramatic quality improvements with large multilingual models like Multilingual Bidirectional and Auto-Regressive Transformer (mBART50) and IndicTrans2 multilingual Transformer model, but their parameter counts (often [Formula: see text] billion) make real-time, on-device deployment infeasible. Although Assamese and Bodo are not among mBART50's pretraining languages, we first fine-tuned mBART50 on the AI4Bharat Samanantar Assamese-English and IndicTrans2-derived Bodo-English corpora to enable cross-li

Self-supervised Depth Estimation for Monocular Endoscopy Using Confidence-Rectified Distillation and Semantic Distribution Alignment.

Monocular depth estimation (MDE) is a core capability for 3D reconstruction and intraoperative augmented reality in endoscopy. Recent self-supervised methods improve performance by leveraging reprojection consistency, temporal constraints, and stronger representations. However, endoscopic images exhibit specular highlights, low texture, and pronounced non-Lambertian effects. These factors introduce noise, degrading depth accuracy in endoscopic settings. In this work, we further introduce two complementary innovations, confidence-rectified distillation and semantic distribution alignment (SDA),

SD2-ReID: A semantic-stylistic decoupled distillation framework for robust multi-modal object re-identification.

The core challenge of multi-modal object re-identification (ReID) lies in reconciling the style discrepancies across different modalities with the semantic consistency of identity. However, existing methods are difficult to effectively separate semantic features from modality-specific styles, resulting in semantic representations being contaminated by noise and affecting recognition performance. To address the above issues, we propose a multi-modal re-identification framework based on semantic-stylistic decoupled distillation, named SD2-ReID (Semantic-Stylistic Decoupled Distillation for ReID)

MPQ-DMv2: Flexible Residual Mixed Precision Quantization for Low-Bit Diffusion Models With Temporal Distillation.

Diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable performance on vision generation tasks. However, the high computational complexity hinders its wide application on edge devices. Quantization has emerged as a promising technique for inference acceleration and memory reduction. However, existing quantization methods do not generalize well under extremely low-bit (2-4 b) quantization. Directly applying these methods will cause severe performance degradation. We identify that the existing quantization framework suffers from the outlier-unfriendly quantizer design, suboptimal initialization, and optim

A Lightweight Student Network with Dynamic Multi-Teacher Distillation for Optical Remote Sensing Object Detection.

Optical remote sensing object detection faces challenges such as large variations in scale, slender and direction-sensitive targets, complex backgrounds, and limited deployment resources. This paper proposes a lightweight geometrically decoupled student network with a dynamic multi-teacher distillation framework. Based on YOLO11n, the student detector keeps the original classification branch while redesigning the regression branches at different scales. Lightweight regression towers are used for the shallow and deep branches, whereas a geometrically decoupled regression tower is introduced onl

A Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation Framework for Enhancing the Robustness of Automated Sperm Morphology Assessment.

Background/Objectives: The manual analysis of sperm morphology, crucial for male infertility diagnosis, is subjective and time-consuming. Automated methods using deep learning, offer a promising alternative; however, standard deep models are prone to overfitting when applied to small, heavily unbalanced clinical datasets, limiting their generalization capability. This study proposes a knowledge distillation approach that functions as a strong regularizer, improving the robustness of automated sperm morphology analysis. Methods: We utilize soft distillation to transfer knowledge from a set of h

Anticipating Object Interactions Via Aggregation and Distillation of Spatio-Temporal Knowledge From Vision Language Models.

The increasing prevalence of wearable cameras has driven the development of egocentric (first-person) systems that assist human activities proactively by anticipating imminent interactions. A central challenge in this domain is active object interaction anticipation from first-person video-predicting what interaction will occur, when it will happen, and where it will take place. This involves forecasting (1) what interaction category (verb-noun pair), (2) when (time-to-interaction), and (3) where (the active object's location, bounding box in the last observed frame). However, existing approac
