Influence of melatonin or its antagonism on alcohol consumption in ethanol drinking rats: a behavioral and in vivo voltammetric study.

Melatonin, an indoleamine hormone synthesized in the pinealocytes, has been implicated as influencing the intake of alcohol in rats. It has been shown that this hormone is voltammetrically electroactive at the surface of pretreated carbon fiber microelectrodes in vitro and in vivo, in rat cerebral melatonergic regions such the pineal gland. The aim of this work consisted in the study of the influence of melatonin on spontaneously ethanol drinking or ethanol avoiding rats selected throughout a free choice two bottle test. It appeared that only the water preferring rats were affected by treatmen

Cabergoline decreases alcohol drinking and seeking behaviors via glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor.

BACKGROUND: Cabergoline is an ergotamine derivative that increases the expression of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in vitro. We recently showed that GDNF in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) reduces the motivation to consume alcohol. We therefore set out to determine whether cabergoline administration decreases alcohol-drinking and -seeking behaviors via GDNF. METHODS: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) were used to measure GDNF levels. Western blot analysis was used for phosphorylation experiments. Operan

Do protective behavioral strategies mediate the relationship between drinking motives and alcohol use in college students?

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use among college students represents a public health problem on American college campuses. Use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) has been shown to be related to reduced alcohol use and fewer alcohol-related problems, but the relationship of PBS to other alcohol-related constructs is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of PBS mediated the relationship between positively and negatively reinforcing drinking motives and both alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. METHOD: Data were collected on 254 undergraduate students at a lar

College drinking behaviors: mediational links between parenting styles, parental bonds, depression, and alcohol problems.

Mediational links between parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), parental bond (positive, negative), depression, alcohol use and abuse were tested. A 2-group, multiple-indicator, multiple-cause structural equation model with 441 (216 female, 225 male) college students was examined. In general, a poor parental bond with one's father was highly predictive of depression, a well-known predictor of alcohol abuse and related problems for both genders. In contrast, a positive parental bond with one's father significantly mediated the positive effects of authoritative fathering o

Imposter syndrome and college students' drinking behaviors: The roles of negative affect and coping motivated alcohol use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: College students are known to frequently engage in alcohol consumption, and are at risk for developing dangerous drinking patterns (e.g., binge drinking). Since imposter syndrome occurs at high rates among undergraduate students, it is reasonable to assume that college students may experience its negative effects, such as anxiety and depression. Given the relation of anxiety and depression to worse drinking outcomes, imposter syndrome may also be related to greater drinking and related problems. Yet, this is the first known study to test whether imposter syndrome is

Links between adolescent binge drinking and midlife alcohol use behaviors by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is increasing among adults in midlife (i.e., ages 35-60), but few studies examine specific alcohol use behaviors in this age group. We examined measures of typical drinks, maximum drinks, binge drinking, and high-intensity drinking by age, sex, and race/ethnicity among midlife adults, as well as the prospective association between age 18 binge drinking and midlife behaviors. METHODS: Data from 5180 respondents participating in the national Monitoring the Future Panel study who were aged 35-60 in 2022 (followed since they were in 12th grade in 1980-2005) were used to es

Neurocognitive Markers during Maximum Alcohol Use in Late Adolescence as Predictors of Change in Later Drinking Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The influence of alcohol use on later neurocognitive functioning is well researched, yet few studies have investigated whether neurocognition post-drinking initiation in adolescence predicts changes in later alcohol use. OBJECTIVE: Investigate neurocognitive task performance during maximum alcohol use in late adolescence as predictors of drinking behaviors 3-7 years later. METHODS: Analyses (n=105) were conducted on a longitudinal dataset involving adolescents (12-13 years-old) who were followed for 16 years. Time 1 (T1) was defined as the individuals' maximum drinking year withi

Depression-like behaviors induced by chronic corticosterone exposure via drinking water: Time-course analysis.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity is commonly dysregulated in stress-related psychiatric disorders. The corticosterone rat model was developed to understand the influence of stress on depression-like symptomatology. To further understand the effects of corticosterone on the development of depression-like behavior, rats were continuously exposed to corticosterone (200 μg/ml) or vehicle via drinking water daily for 21 days. The rats underwent a series of behavioral tests, and electroencephalographical recordings were performed after 7, 14, and 21 days of treatment. The measureme

Behavioral predictors of alcohol drinking in a neurodevelopmental rat model of schizophrenia and co-occurring alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use disorder commonly occurs in patients with schizophrenia and contributes greatly to its morbidity. Unfortunately, the neural and behavioral underpinnings of alcohol drinking in these patients are not well understood. In order to begin to understand the cognitive and reward-related changes that may contribute to alcohol drinking, this study was designed to address: 1) latent inhibition; 2) conditioning; and 3) extinction of autoshaping in a neurodevelopmental rat model with relevance to co-occurring schizophrenia and alcohol use disorders, the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesioned (N

Effect of subcutaneous injection of estradiol on feeding and drinking behaviors and body weight in basolateral amygdaloid lesioned rats.

BACKGROUND: Estradiol is known to inhibit food intake (FI), water intake (WI) and body weight (BW) across the species including women and it is most evident in rats. Ovariectomy in rats and menopause in women produce hyperphagia and obesity. Estradiol substitution in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and hormone replacement in women reverses these changes suggesting that lack of estradiol causes eating related disorders. However, the neurobiological target/s for estradiol mediating effects remains largely unknown. While lesions of basolateral amygdala (BLA) also produce hyperphagia, polydipsia and obe

Relationship of binge drinking to alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, and behavioral problems in an American Indian tribe.

The hypothesis that binge drinking is a benign behavior not associated with alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, or problem areas, in American Indians, was tested in a sample of 582 adult Southwestern American Indian males and females in large multigenerational pedigrees. All information was obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews that were independently blind-rated for DSM-III-R diagnoses. Three main outcome measures were used: the relationship between binge drinking and (1) alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders, (2) substance abuse treatment, and (3) four

Expectancies for alcohol analgesia and drinking behavior among veterans with chronic pain: The moderating role of discrimination in medical settings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain and alcohol use are highly prevalent and frequently co-occur among U.S. military veterans. Expectancies for alcohol analgesia (i.e., degree to which one believes that drinking can reduce or manage pain) may contribute to alcohol consumption, dependence, and related harms. Discrimination in medical settings (i.e., inequitable treatment in healthcare contexts) has been linked to deleterious health outcomes and may amplify associations between expectancies for alcohol analgesia and indices of hazardous drinking. Our goal was to test discrimination in medica

Longitudinal Relations Among Parental Substance Use Disorder and Adolescent Drinking Behavior: The Role of Temperament, Negative Urgency, and Maternal Parenting.

Research suggests that parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent drinking indirectly through negative urgency, a form of impulsivity that is particularly associated with high-risk drinking. Moreover, childhood mechanisms of risk may play a role in this developmental chain such that childhood temperament and parenting may be mechanisms through which parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent negative urgency and drinking behavior. Therefore, the current study tested whether parental substance use disorder was indirectly associated with adolescent drinking

Effects of a Peripherally Restricted Hybrid Inhibitor of CB1 Receptors and iNOS on Alcohol Drinking Behavior and Alcohol-Induced Endotoxemia.

Alcohol consumption is associated with gut dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability, endotoxemia, and a cascade that leads to persistent systemic inflammation, alcoholic liver disease, and other ailments. Craving for alcohol and its consequences depends, among other things, on the endocannabinoid system. We have analyzed the relative role of central vs. peripheral cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1R) using a "two-bottle" as well as a "drinking in the dark" paradigm in mice. The globally acting CB1R antagonist rimonabant and the non-brain penetrant CB1R antagonist JD5037 inhibited voluntary alc

Neural dysfunctions following experimental permanent occlusions of bilateral common carotid arteries cause an increase of rat voluntary alcohol drinking behavior.

We have previously reported that ischemic animal models treated with a respiratory inhibitor, rotenon, show an increased voluntary alcohol intake. Although it is clear that ischemic brain, as a result of reduced-blood flow, shows pathological events and/or neuro-degenerations apparently, little is known of causal relationship between the mechanism of neural dysfunction and voluntary alcohol consumption. Authors have investigated effects of permanent two-vessel occlusion (p2VO) on rat voluntary alcohol drinking behavior. In first experiment the p2VO-treated rats showed an increase of voluntary

Effects of a behavior change campaign on household drinking water disinfection in the Lake Chad basin using the RANAS approach.

Worldwide, an estimated 700 million people rely on unimproved drinking water sources; even more consume water that is not safe to drink. Inadequate drinking water quality constitutes a major risk factor for cholera and other diarrheal diseases around the globe, especially for young children in developing countries. Household water treatment and safe storage systems represent an intermediate solution for settings that lack infrastructure supplying safe drinking water. However, the correct and consistent usage of such treatment technologies rely almost exclusively on the consumer's behavior. Thi

Drinking Behavior and Mental Illness Among Evacuees in Fukushima Following the Great East Japan Earthquake: The Fukushima Health Management Survey.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence from alcohol and trauma studies suggests that disasters are associated with increases in the consumption of alcohol. The Great East Japan Earthquake and the associated nuclear disaster have continued to affect the mental health of evacuees from Fukushima. This study aimed to extend these findings by examining the relationship between drinking behaviors and the risk of mental illness after the compound disaster. METHODS: We conducted the Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey with 56,543 evacuees. Kessler's K6 was used to assess the risk of mental illness, and logistic

Prior experience with flavored alcohol increases preference for flavored alcohol but flavor does not influence binge-like drinking behavior in mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking can lead to various negative consequences and in non-experimental settings, alcohol usually contains flavoring, which may promote increased binge drinking. Preclinical models of binge-like drinking have been well established, however, the influence of flavor on alcohol preference and binge-like drinking has not been fully explored. METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6 J mice were tested via two-bottle choice with alcohol flavored with different concentrations of unsweetened Cherry flavor Kool-Aid and water. Next, mice were tested for preference for flavored alcohol over
