Screening of Brazilian cacti rhizobacteria for plant growth promotion under drought.

Drought is one of the major problems worldwide. The search for new and efficient microorganisms, from unexplored environments, to be used in association with plants to alleviate the negative effects imposed by water stress, is an interesting alternative. Thus, cacti-associated bacteria from the Brazilian semi-arid region were isolated based on their ability to grow in medium with reduced water availability. Strains were tested for the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS), as well as in vitro plant growth promotion traits. A great proportion of the isolates belong to the genus Bacillus. From

Impact of drought on the spatial pattern of transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in coastal Kenya.

We analyzed temporal changes in spatial patterns of active Schistosoma haematobium infection in different age groups and associated them with ponds infested with Bulinus snails. A major drought between 2001 and 2009 resulted in drying of ponds that were known sources of infection, and we detected very few or no snails in ponds that were infested in the past. The household-level spatial pattern of infection for children of various age groups in 2009 was contrasted with historical data from 2000. The significant local clustering of high- and low-infection levels among school-aged children that o

Positive feedback regulation of a Lycium chinense-derived VDE gene by drought-induced endogenous ABA, and over-expression of this VDE gene improve drought-induced photo-damage in Arabidopsis.

Violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) plays an important role in protecting the photosynthetic apparatus from photo-damage by dissipating excessively absorbed light energy as heat, via the conversion of violaxanthin (V) to intermediate product antheraxanthin (A) and final product zeaxanthin (Z) under light stress. We have cloned a VDE gene (LcVDE) from Lycium chinense, a deciduous woody perennial halophyte, which can grow in a large variety of soil types. The amino acid sequence of LcVDE has high homology with VDEs in other plants. Under drought stress, relative expression of LcVDE and the de-epoxid

Severe droughts and the tuberculosis and HIV care cascade in the Brazilian Amazon: a Bayesian, structural, interrupted time-series analysis of 24 years of surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: In river-dependent regions such as the Brazilian Amazon, severe droughts can disrupt care continuity by isolating municipalities and fragmenting supply chains. We assessed how four major droughts affected tuberculosis and HIV care cascades in Amazonas state. METHODS: We analysed monthly data (Jan 1, 2001, to Dec 31, 2024) from all 62 municipalities of the Amazonas state, Brazil, grouped into nine river basins and stratified by sex when available. Droughts were defined by the relative maximum cumulative water deficit value being below -2·0 or river discharge at or below the fifth h

[Spatiotemporal accumulation patterns of pharmacodynamic components in Taraxacum officinale and their response to drought stress].

This study systematically investigated the spatiotemporal accumulation characteristics of pharmacodynamic components in Taraxacum officinale and their response mechanisms to drought stress. The objectives were to elucidate the plant's growth traits and quality formation patterns, so as to guide its standardized cultivation and ensure a stable supply of high-quality medicinal materials. The contents of seven pharmacodynamic components were determined in different organs(leaf, root, flower, and scape) of flowering plants to pinpoint their primary accumulation sites. A pot experiment was conducte

The effect of drought on physiological and agronomic traits of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter].

Increased intensity and duration of drought as a consequence of global warming is resulting in increased crop failure and food insecurity. This is particularly prevalent in regions where agriculture is rain fed, as the resultant water deficit in crop tissues as a consequence of insufficient soil moisture to sustain metabolic integrity results in subcellular damage and, ultimately tissue death. Different plants can perceive moisture stress stimuli from their environment and develop adaptive mechanisms to cope with water stress. However, the response of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], a st

Dissecting the genetic basis underlying drought tolerance at different development stages in soybean.

INTRODUCTION: Soybean is an indispensable crop supplying protein and oil for humans and animals, and playing an essential role in global food security. Drought represses soybean seed germination, reducing biomass accumulation and even inhibiting yield. METHODS: In order to dissect the genetic components underlying soybean drought tolerance during different development stage, a natural population containing 140 accessions was employed to evaluate seven drought tolerance-related traits under water-welled and drought stress conditions. Subsequently, genome-wide association study (GWAS) was condu

TaHDA1-mediated histone and non-histone deacetylation orchestrates drought tolerance in wheat.

Drought stress severely constrains wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and productivity. Here, we identify the histone deacetylase TaHDA1 as a negative regulator of drought tolerance in wheat. We demonstrate that TaHDA1 interacts with and deacetylates the L-glutamate decarboxylase TaGAD1 at lysine 493, promoting its ubiquitination-dependent degradation and thereby suppressing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) accumulation. Loss of TaHDA1 function enhances TaGAD1 stability, increases GABA levels, and confers markedly improved drought tolerance, along with elevated grain GABA content. Integrated multi-

Seasonal ecological quality in China: concurrent and lagged drought responses and dominant factors.

INTRODUCTION: Global warming is intensifying seasonal droughts and increasing their pressure on terrestrial ecosystems. However, most assessments of drought impacts on ecological quality remain focused on annual-scale or concurrent relationships, with insufficient attention to drought seasonality, lagged effects, and differences along aridity-humidity gradients. METHODS: This study constructed spring, summer, and autumn Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) for China from 2001 to 2022, and analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of ecological quality at the seasonal scale. Impacts of inter-basin water transfer on reservoir storage and regional drought characteristics.

The Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD-MRP) is an important measure for alleviating water scarcity in central and northern China. To clarify the regulatory effects of inter-basin water transfer on reservoir droughts in both water intake and receiving regions, this study reconstructs a daily reservoir storage dataset for 1990-2024 using multi-source remote sensing data. A Remote Sensing-based High-Resolution Reservoir Drought Index (RS-HRDI) is developed to identify drought events, and copula functions are applied to examine drought characteristics, spatial heterog

Congener Dreissenid Mussels Differ in Their Survival and Behavioral Responses to Drought and Immersion in Sediments.

Quagga (QM) and zebra (ZM) mussels (Dreissena bugensis and Dreissena polymorpha) are invasive bivalves forming freshwater fouling communities of high economic and environmental importance in Europe and North America. They may experience immersion in soft sediments by sedimenting particles (mostly at deeper locations or areas with high hydrodynamic activity) or while attached to burrowing unionid mussels. On the other hand, mussels located near the water surface may encounter water level decreases and air exposure during droughts. We experimentally tested mussel survival and behavioral response

Inoculation of Priestia megaterium confers drought tolerance to garden pea (Pisum sativum).

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of six PGP microbial isolates (FM20, FM65, FM19, W22, OF5, and Control) to mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress (40% FC) on pea (Pisum sativum) compared to normal irrigation (80% FC). The results demonstrated that PGP inoculants significantly enhanced physiological, ionic, and yield parameters under both normal and stress conditions consistently outperforming the uninoculated control. Under drought stress, W22 maintained the highest Relative Water Content (88.5%), statistically similar to several normal treatments, indicating s

Can crop diversification buffer drought shocks? Evidence from Ethiopian smallholders.

Crop diversification is widely promoted as a sustainable land management strategy that can improve nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and pest regulation while stabilizing yields under climate stress. Yet evidence on whether spatial and temporal crop diversification buffers drought-related production losses and food insecurity among smallholders remains limited, especially in Ethiopia. This study examines how household-reported drought shocks are associated with agricultural production, crop value, crop income, and household food security, and whether diversification is associated with weaker a

An integrated transcriptomic and proteomics analysis reveals the impact of drought stress on Pisum sativum.

Drought stress is a major limitation to global crop productivity, yet the molecular basis of drought responses in Pisum sativum (pea) a nutritionally important legume remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that drought induces coordinated transcriptional and proteomic reprogramming in pea chloroplasts and leaves, thereby activating photoprotective, antioxidant, and stress-responsive pathways. To investigate this, we applied integrated transcriptomic (Solexa-Illumina sequencing) and proteomic (iTRAQ) analyses, focusing on chloroplast-targeted transcripts and proteins. Our findings revealed

Widely targeted metabolic profiling reveals drought resistance mechanisms in alfalfa leaves.

Drought is considered a primary factor constraining alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) yield and acreage. To understand the internal drought resistance mechanisms of alfalfa is essential for breeding drought-resistant alfalfa varieties. Here, we compared the phenotypic characteristics, metabolic pathways and metabolites of drought-resistant (Longzhong, LZ) and drought-sensitive (Gannong No. 3, G3) varieties under drought stress. Phenotypic analysis revealed that drought stress reduced plant height, single plant fresh weight, single plant dry weight and leaf RWC in alfalfa, with a greater effect obse
