We characterized the variability in concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) measured in residential dust. Vacuum cleaner samples were collected from 289 homes in the California Childhood Leukemia Study during two sampling rounds from 2001 to 2010 and 15 PCBs were measured by high resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Median concentrations of the most abundant PCBs (i.e., PCBs 28, 52, 101, 105, 118, 138, 153, and 180) ranged from 1.0-5.8 ng per g of dust in the first sampling round and from 0.8-3.4 ng/g in the second sampling round. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a cellulose plant among 109 reed workers, exposed to reed dust and 78 unexposed office workers, to investigate respiratory health effects of reed dust exposure. Concerns over possible gaseous emissions from lignosulfonate dust suppressant agents used on dirt roads prompted an investigation into the possible release of sulfur dioxide and organic vapors. Emissions from eight commercial lignosulfonates products applied to three different soil types were measured in environmental chambers. The aim of the study was to assess occupational hazards to the farmer's skin associated with processing thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.). 46 farmers were studied during the threshing of dried thyme. They were questioned about work-related skin problems and examined before and after work. In all persons, serum thyme-specific IgE was measured. Injuries caused by radio-therapy prove difficult to cure. Catrix is a healing product composed of a collagen particle base having a proven effectiveness in the treatment of various kinds of ulcers. In a study on 33 patients who received radio-therapy and who suffered from injuries caused by roentgen dermatitis, this product succeeded in curing 100% of these ulcers, demonstrating great speed in producing an effect, while the average treatment duration was 5 days. There were no adverse reactions. Therefore, this product received positive marks from both professionals and patients.

Owing to the abundance of a sedimentary rock, 65 small-scale quartz manufacturing enterprises, employing 650 workers, have been established in the region studied. Quartz powder manufacturing involves various processes and operations, such as manual handling of quartz stones, crushing, grinding, sieving, screening, mixing, storing and bagging. Results demonstrate that each of these operations generates high concentrations of airborne 'total' dust and respirable dust, which contain a very high percentage (> 75%) free silica.
