BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms occur in several psychiatric disorders, often in the absence of a formal diagnosis of depression. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and the tolerability of amisulpride, both alone and as augmentation therapy, in the treatment of depressive symptoms in individuals with any major psychiatric disorder.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, GreyLit, OpenGrey and ProQuest up to March 2020 for randomised controlled trials focussing on the treatment of an acute depressive episode in any major psychiatric disorder. A random-effect meta-analysis was performed t

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently comorbid with persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), indicating shared neurobiological pathways that influence stress modulation, emotional regulation, and neurohormonal adaptation. This study examines the roles of serum biomarkers-small ubiquitin-like modifier 1 (SUMO1), malondialdehyde (MDA), fractalkine (CX3CL1), and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1)-involved in oxidative stress management, neuroimmune regulation, and neuronal proteostasis. In this cross-sectional analysis, biomarker expression was assessed in 92 male trauma-e

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate to what extent people with carpometacarpal thumb osteoarthritis that are socioeconomically disadvantaged and have psychological disorders report higher pain levels and worse patient-rated upper-extremity functionality after surgical treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A single centre, retrospective observational cohort study analysing 100 patients diagnosed with thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis between 2013 and 2019. Patients were divided into two groups (50/50), depending on whether they received surgical or conservative treatment. The socio-economi

Systematic studies of psychiatric disorders in non -ulcer dyspepsia are rare. The aim of the present study was to find out the nature and prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in non-ulcer dyspepsia. Thirty three patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia and thirty with duodenal ulcer were assessed for psychiatric morbidity with the help of the regular version of the SADS, and diagnosed according to DSM-IIIR criteria. Non-ulcer dyspepsia was defined precisely and investigators who made the psychiatric diagnosis were blind to the gastroenterological diagnosis. In the non-ulcer dyspepsia group, 69.7% of p

This research examined the malleability of physicians' knowledge about psychiatric disorders (and their recommended treatments) based on a brief educational intervention. Primary care physicians were randomly assigned to a single-session intervention dealing with selected DSM-IIIR affective and anxiety disorders or to a wait-list control group. Posttest (vs. pretest) measures indicated that experimental physicians showed greater increases than controls in diagnostic accuracy on relevant disorders, specifically, major depression, dysthymic disorder, and agoraphobia with panic attacks. Treatment

This article presents a literature review and description of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a newly recognized disorder, differentiated from other affective illnesses by its seasonality (with midwinter dysthymia and spring/summer remission), and its atypical symptoms of hypersomnia and hyperphagia. SAD symptoms remit with travel towards the equator or with bright light treatments, possibly indicating a chronobiological circadian etiology. This article introduces aspects of SAD that are amenable to the nursing process, including assessment of the seasonality of dysthymic symptoms; di

Thirteen patients with major depressive disorder, 25 patients with dysthymia and 12 healthy controls underwent ergopsychometric testing. The effect of self-paced and set-paced load on mood, vigilance and perseveration tendency was recorded. Within the clinical groups, various types of load seemed to result mainly in variations in mood. Dysthymics reacted to monotonous load with a deterioration in mood and reacted to load under time pressure with an improvement in mood. Patients with major depressive disorder displayed an amelioration in mood throughout the whole experiment regardless of which

Defining chronic depression as persistent symptoms for 2 or more years, a prevalence of chronic depression of 12-15% is found in the literature. A four-part classification of chronic depression is proposed: Chronic Primary Major Depression; Chronic Secondary Major Depression; Characterological or Chronic Minor Depression (Dysthymic Disorder); and 'Double Depression'. The literature indicates several factors predicting chronicity in primary major depression: more at risk are female patients, particularly those with premorbid neurotic personality traits, individuals with unipolar disorders, and

One of the many controversies concerning the borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis is whether the construct refers to a categorical or dimensional variable. The current study used Meehl's (1973) maximum covariance analysis to investigate this issue. The charts of 409 psychiatric inpatients were systematically reviewed for the presence of BPD and dysthymic symptoms. Charts of 244 inpatients were also reviewed to assess the presence of indicators of male sex, a categorical variable. The results for BPD and dysthymia were consistent with a dimensional model, whereas those for male sex w

BACKGROUND: Dysthimia in adults is a chronic depression disorder which is characterized by a mild depression for at least 2 years. Remarkable psycho-social involvements, greater disturbances in psycho-social functions compared to other forms of depression and lack of definite findings about preferred treatment for this disorder led us to evaluate the effectiveness of Mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) method adjunct to pharmacotherapy compared with pharmachothrapy alone in treating dysthymia in this thesis.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-base

Although the existence of chronic depression has been recognized for a long time, their definition was too inaccurate to enable reliable studies concerning their treatment. Among the numerous diagnostic classes that patients with chronic depression were assigned to, neurotic depression was the most common one, and was often considered to be unresponsive to antidepressant medication. Since DSM-III introduced 'Dysthymic Disorder', a new research was developed on the efficacy of tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs or new antidepressants, whose results reversed previous opinion on its unresponsivenes

The purpose of this study was to assess the familial coaggregation of borderline personality disorder (BPD) with a full array of axis I disorders and four axis II disorders (antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and sadistic personality disorder) in the first-degree relatives of borderline probands and axis II comparison subjects. Four hundred and forty-five inpatients were interviewed about familial psychopathology using the Revised Family History Questionnaire-a semistructured interview of demonstrated reliability. Of these 445 s

Depressive personality disorder (DPD) is highly studied and common in clinical settings. Nevertheless, it is rife with controversies and often overshadowed by major depression and dysthymia with which it shares many similarities but also is clinically distinct. Possibly as a result, DPD is underdiagnosed and misunderstood in clinical care. Thus the goal of this practice review is to present a case from psychiatric clinical work illustrating how DPD may be commonly overlooked in routine care, and how the conceptualization of this case and its treatment plan changed course once DPD was considere

This study examined transdiagnostic features of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and dysthymia in an outpatient clinical sample. Fifteen patients who met DSM-IV criteria for GAD and twenty-one patients who met DSM-IV criteria for dysthymia but who did not have comorbid anxiety disorder were evaluated utilizing the Rorschach. Salient clinical variables were then compared. Results showed that patients with GAD scored significantly higher on variables related to cognitive agitation and a desire/need for external soothing. In addition, there was a trend for patients with GAD to produce higher sc

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been associated with difficulties in social and interpersonal functioning. Deficits in emotion processing may contribute to the development and maintenance of interpersonal difficulties in MDD. Although some studies have found that MDD is associated with deficits in recognition of emotion in faces, other studies have failed to find any impairment.
METHODS: The present meta-analysis of 23 studies, with 516 dysthymic/depressed participants and 614 euthymic control participants, examined facial emotion recognition accuracy in MDD. Several potential

AIM: Complaints in orthopaedics that are not sufficiently explainable can be caused (partly) by psychosomatic disorders. A manual psychosomatic disorders for legal assessment in orthopaedics will be supplied.
METHOD: Diagnoses essential for orthopaedics are classified by DSM-IV and ICD-10 in consideration of the current literature; evaluation was performed under legal assessment criterions.
RESULTS: The most important complaints that are often poorly explainable results in musculoskeletal pain. Since a sensorial perception of pain is combined with emotions, emotions and psychic disorders can

BACKGROUND: Double depression (DD), the co-existence of DSM-IV major depressive disorder (MDD) and dysthymia, is a poorly known and sparsely studied phenomenon. Nevertheless, it is prevalent in clinical samples of patients with depression. Thus, it is important to understand the efficacy of its treatment.
METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of studies in which antidepressant medication was used to treat depression. Systematic searches in bibliographical databases resulted in 11 samples, including 775 patients that met inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: The overall effect size indicating the diff
