Eagle's syndrome associated with lingual nerve paresthesia: a case report.

Eagle's syndrome is characterized by a variety of symptoms, including throat pain, sensation of a foreign body in the pharynx, dysphagia, referred otalgia, and neck and throat pain exacerbated by head rotation. Any styloid process longer than 25 mm should be considered elongated and will usually be responsible for Eagle's syndrome. Surgical resection of the elongated styloid is a routine treatment and can be accomplished using a transoral or an extraoral approach. We report a patient with a rare giant styloid process that was approximately 81.7 mm. He complained of a rare symptom: hemitongue p

Helminth fauna of a Japanese golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos japonica.

A Japanese golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos japonica, was found dead in Nagano Prefecture PB 399-8200, Japan, and subjected to necropsy. The necropsy revealed that the entire length of the intestine was filled with several masses of intestinal parasites. The recovered helminths were identified as one digenean trematode species, Neodiplostomum reflexum; two species of nematodes, Synhimantus sp. and larvae of Porrocaecum sp.; and a single species of Acanthocephala, Centrorhynchus sp. Digenea and acanthocephalans were found in massive numbers, obliterating the intestinal lumen, which suggests that

Reproductive and hormonal factors and the risk of lung cancer: the EAGLE study.

Evidence about the role for reproductive and hormonal factors in the etiology of lung cancer in women is conflicting. To clarify this question, we examined 407 female cases and 499 female controls from the Environment And Genetics in Lung cancer Etiology population-based case-control study. Subjects were interviewed in person using a computer-assisted personal interview to assess demographics, education, smoking history, medical history, occupational history, reproductive and hormonal factors. Associations of interest were investigated using logistic regression models, adjusted for catchment a

Cervicofacial pain associated with Eagle's syndrome misdiagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome is characterized by the symptoms of recurrent throat pain, pharyngeal foreign body sensation, dysphagia, referred otalgia, and neck pain. The treatment for Eagle's syndrome can be pharmacologically, surgically, or both. The surgical management consists of two major procedures: the transoral approach or the extraoral-cervical approach. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old patient with a severe cervical pain on the left side was evaluated with no defined diagnosis. During physical examination, an elongated styloid process could be palpated and with CT scan image, the Eagle's

Symptomatic Elongated Styloid Process or Eagle's Syndrome: A Case Report.

Elongation of the styloid process or stylohyoid ligament calcification is a well recognized finding of dental prac-tice, and an incidence of 4 to 30 percent has been reported on radiographs. Rarely, complete mineralization of the stylohyoid ligament or elongation of styloid process has been associated with difficulties in intubation and significant clinical symptoms, which is termed Eagle's syndrome, and it exhibits dull or sharp intermittent pain felt along the glossopharyngeal nerve that is located in the hypopharynx and at the base of the tongue and recurrent throat pain or foreign body sen

Scleral and corneal laceration with iris prolapse caused by an eagle claw.

BACKGROUND: To describe the visual rehabilitation after surgical treatment of an ocular injury sustained during an attack by a bird of prey. METHODS: A 51-year-old woman who was attacked by an eagle in a cage had a laceration of cornea and sclera at 9 o' clock, an iris prolapse that was jammed into the scleral wound, and a flat anterior chamber with hyphema. The uncorrected visual acuity was hand movements. Surgical treatment was performed immediately and included iris repositioning and suturing, scleral and conjunctival suturing, and transscleral cryotherapy to the retina. RESULTS: Eight mo

Resource use and associated energy expenditure of African crowned eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) in an urban-forest mosaic landscape.

Rapid urbanization is a major driver of global change, making it increasingly important to understand how wildlife persists in highly transformed landscapes. Using insights from movement (Global Positioning System, GPS) and activity (accelerometry, ACC) data, we aimed to understand the behavioral and physiological mechanisms associated with an apex predator's successful exploitation of heavily transformed landscapes. The African crowned eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus), a subtropical forest eagle, breeds at unusually high densities in Durban, eThekwini Municipality, South Africa. Here, crowned

Lead and eagles: demographic and pathological characteristics of poisoning, and exposure levels associated with other causes of mortality.

We conducted a retrospective analysis to evaluate demographic and pathologic characteristics in 484 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and 68 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) diagnosed with lead poisoning at the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center. As part of our analysis, we compared characteristics of lead poisoned eagles with those that died of other causes. Odds of lead poisoning were greater for bald eagles versus golden eagles, females versus males, adults versus juveniles, and eagles from the Mississippi and Central flyways versus the Atlantic and Pacific flyways

Epizootic vacuolar myelinopathy of the central nervous system of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and American coots (Fulica americana).

Unprecedented mortality occurred in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) at DeGray Lake, Arkansas, during the winters of 1994-1995 and 1996-1997. The first eagles were found dead during November, soon after arrival from fall migration, and deaths continued into January during both episodes. In total, 29 eagles died at or near DeGray Lake in the winter of 1994-1995 and 26 died in the winter of 1996-1997; no eagle mortality was noted during the same months of the intervening winter or in the earlier history of the lake. During the mortality events, sick eagles were observed overflying perches

Mercury residues in livers of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) found dead or dying in British Columbia, Canada (1987-1994).

Postmortem examinations were conducted on 82 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) found dead or dying in British Columbia, Canada, from 1987 to 1994. As part of the examination, livers were analyzed for total mercury (Hg) content, as well as methylmercury (meHg) and selenium (Se) in selected individuals. In total, 67 eagles were classed as having low Hg exposure [total Hg liver residues ranging from 0.5 to 17.2 mg/kg dry weight (dw)]. Fourteen eagles were moderately exposed (liver residues ranging from 19.2 to 36.8 mg/kg Hg dw). One eagle was judged to have died of Hg poisoning, with a total

A Natural Experiment Comparing the Effectiveness of the "Healthy Eagles" Child Weight Management Intervention in School Versus Community Settings.

Behavioural weight management interventions are recommended for the treatment of obesity in children. However, the evidence for these is limited and often generated under trial conditions with White, middle-class populations. Healthy Eagles is a behavioural weight management intervention designed to treat excess weight in children. It ran in the London Borough of Croydon from 2017 to 2020 and was delivered in both school and community settings, providing a natural experiment to compare outcomes. A total of 1560 participants started the Healthy Eagles programme; 347 were in the community settin

Massive Stylohyoid Hyperostosis With Fusion to the Hyoid: An Extreme Variant of Eagle Syndrome.

Eagle syndrome is classically defined by symptomatic elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. While elongated styloid processes are relatively common radiographic findings, extreme bony hypertrophy with direct involvement of the hyoid bone is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 69-year-old male with progressive unilateral odynophagia and neck pain found to have massive hyperostosis of the left styloid process, measuring approximately 9 cm in craniocaudal length, with abutment, erosion, and fibrous union to the lateral body and greater horn of the hyo

Minimally Invasive Skull Base Approach Styloidectomy for Treatment of Eagle Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Eagle syndrome is an underrecognized condition caused by the elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, with an unknown true incidence. It is diagnosed clinically through symptoms related to compression of the surrounding neurovascular and musculoskeletal structures, along with radiographic confirmation of styloid elongation. Symptoms are variable and may include neck pain, dysphagia, tinnitus, dizziness, headaches, otalgia, and cognitive complaints. Surgical management via intraoral or transcervical approaches is the current standard of care.

Eagle Syndrome with Internal Carotid Artery Compression Causing Recurred Syncope.

We herein report a 54-year-old man with eagle syndrome who presented with repeated episodes of syncope, especially after moving his head to a downward position. Computed tomography with contrast revealed a bilateral elongated styloid process. The left internal carotid artery was obviously compressed by the left elongated styloid processes. A transcranial Doppler examination detected a significantly decreased blood flow velocity in the left middle cerebral artery when the patient slightly lowered his head position. After surgery, the positional cerebral blood flow alteration disappeared. No fur
