Anticipating real-ear insertion response using an external auditory canal model.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the acoustic characteristics of the external auditory canal (EAC) and predict the real-ear aided response (REAR) using an EAC model that includes the standing wave effect. METHODS: The EAC transfer function equations were derived by summing the incoming and outgoing waves. First, we investigated the real-ear unaided gain (REUG). Second, seven patients (eight ears) wearing hearing aids (HAs) were enrolled as subjects to examine the REAR. We conducted wideband tympanometry (WBT) to measure the absorbance, the frequency response at 65 dB (65dB-FR) of the

Benign cylindroma: a rare differential diagnosis of external ear canal tumour.

Cylindromas are rare adnexal skin tumours that usually occur in the head and neck area. This article reports a case of benign cylindroma arising in the external auditory canal. A 75-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of right aural fullness; no other symptoms were reported. Ear microscopy examination revealed a skin mass on the floor of the external ear canal. Α CT scan of the skull showed a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass, with no signs of underlying cortical bone erosion. Tumour resection through an endaural approach was performed. Histological examination revealed a benign cy

Gustatory otorrhoea: a rare case of congenital external ear salivary fistula.

OBJECTIVE: We present an extremely rare case of a 44-year-old woman with right gustatory otorrhoea and otalgia. CASE REPORT: The patient had been initially treated for otitis externa after Pseudomonas aeruginosa was grown from a microbiological swab. The otorrhoea fluid was collected and tested positive for amylase. Sialography and computed tomography imaging of the temporal bone confirmed a sialo-aural fistula from the right parotid gland to the bony external acoustic meatus. The defect was consistent with a patent foramen of Huschke. The fistula was identified surgically via a superficial p

Facial palsy following trauma to the external ear: 3 case reports.

We report two children and a young adult who developed unilateral facial palsy shortly after injury to the external ear. In two instances the paralysis followed a prominent ear correction and in the other a laceration to the concha. The trauma-triggered facial palsy was most likely idiopathic although the anatomy of the facial nerve near the ear leads one to speculate on a possible pathway of a virally induced palsy (Bell's palsy). Each patient recovered over a period of 6 months.

Application of modified transmastoid approach methods to congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection.

OBJECTIVE: To present our surgical technique for congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection. METHODS: A modified transmastoid approach to congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection was applied. Our method is to visualize the landmarks of the mastoid cavity such as the antrum, sinodural angle and digastric ridge by the canal-open method to avoid facial nerve injury and then prepare a relatively large external ear canal with reconstruction of the posterior wall of the external ear canal. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: This method is suitable not

Viral Targeting of Sensory Nerves of the External Ear in a Murine Model.

HYPOTHESIS: A novel adeno-associated virus (AAV) can be used to label the sensory nerves of the external ear in mice. BACKGROUND: Stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) has been proposed as a noninvasive approach to vagus nerve stimulation. Here, we use a recently introduced AAV with enhanced tropism for peripheral sensory neurons (AAV-PHP.S) to label the somatosensory nerves of the external ear, including the ABVN. METHODS: AAV-PHP.S capsids with a Cre-dependent fluorescent reporter cargo were injected retro-orbitally into 9 adult transgenic mice. Sensory ganglia for

Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia with Eosinophilia in the Auricle and External Ear: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare, benign condition of unknown cause. It presents with red, purple, or brown bumps, patches, or lumps that develop in the skin or under the skin. It often appears in the head and neck area and near the ears. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman presented with multiple red lesions in the area around the ear. The patient had a history of treatment with steroid cream and steroid injections into the lesion, but there was no improvement. The initial biopsy was folliculitis, and the final pathology report reported ALHE. CONCLUSIO

Incidence of audiologic or otolaryngologic evaluation in patients with external ear anomalies.

PURPOSE: The relationship between specific external ear anomalies (EEA) and hearing loss has been previously described. However, there is no literature regarding the appropriate evaluation of patients with EEA by audiology or otolaryngology. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of audiologic or otolaryngologic evaluation of patients with EEA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of charts was conducted following approval from the institutional review board at Boston Medical Center. Charts of patients younger than 18 years old with EEA, identified using Internati

Benign mesenchymal tumors of the external ear: A series of 14 cases.

Primary soft tissue tumors of the head and neck region are relatively uncommon. Most are not distinctive to this region. Benign mesenchymal tumors of the external ear are rare. Some are common tumors but unusual in this location. All of the reported cases were single case reports or small series. Our aim was to study the prevalence and spectrum of different types of benign mesenchymal tumors that involve the external ear in our institution, to find out whether any lesion is distinctive to this site, their potential clinical associations and to highlight their potential diagnostic challenges. Neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear with extension into the external auditory canal.

We report a case of middle ear adenoma (neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear) protruding into the external ear canal. The patient was a 65-year-old man with hearing alterations and a headache in whom an otoscopy disclosed a sessile, pea-sized, brown-reddish, focally bleeding mass located in the posterior-superior aspect of the right external auditory canal. Histopathologically, there was a neoplasm composed of closely packed, sometimes back-to-back glandular structures formed by small uniform cuboidal or cylindrical cells. Small solid islands were also present. Following the histopathologi

The petrified auricle: comments on ossification, calcification and exostoses of the external ear.

The petrified auricle is a clinical entity in which the auricle, in part or total, has become stone-hard and moves as a rigid unit. This uncommon condition is most often due to ectopic calcification of the auricular cartilage. It may occur as a result of local trauma, in association with various systemic diseases such as Addison's disease, hypopituitarism, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, or following radiation therapy. Auricular ossificans (ectopic ossification) is a rare phenomenon in which the rigidity of the petrified ear is due to replacement of the elastic cartilage by bone. In the lite

[Personal experiences in the surgery of external ear abnormalities. IV. Microtia].

Our methods of the reconstruction of the microtia are mentioned. In microtia of both auricles we first try to reconstruct the structures of middle ear and the external channel. If possible we use a "transposition-rotation flap" and rib cartilage for support. The advantages of pedicled flaps in auricle surgery are described.

Comprehensive smartphone-based 3D scanning framework for capturing the external ear.

Congenital microtia manifests abnormalities in the external ear leading to potential adverse impacts on psychosocial health and hearing impairment. Three-dimensional (3D) technologies have demonstrated potential applications for personalised prosthesis fabrication; however, the large hardware costs limit their routine clinical use. Frugal 3D scan-model-print pipelines can disrupt traditional processes and increase accessibility. In this study, we aimed to further validate 3D photogrammetry using 3 different smartphone models. Both ears of 10 participants were scanned with 4 devices: Samsung Ga
