BACKGROUND: Reconstruction following traumatic amputation of the external ear remains a unique challenge to the plastic surgeon. The authors report a series of ear reconstructions with autologous costal cartilage in patients following traumatic partial amputation of the ear. Technical points regarding the carving of the cartilage framework and methods of skin coverage are discussed.
METHODS: Fifty partial ear reconstructions with autologous costal cartilage were performed over a 4-year period. All patients had suffered previous traumatic amputation of part of the external auricle due to bite

We have classified the cauliflower ear into different types according to the zone and the degree of deformity. One major group is deformity without change in the outline of the ear, and this is divided into four subgroups according to the zone. All of these subgroups can be treated by shaving the deformed cartilage through suitable incision lines. For deformities accompanied by a skin deficit, a postauricular skin flap should be used. The other major group is deformity accompanied by a change in the outline of the ear, which is divided into two subgroups. If the ear is rigid, a conchal cartila

PURPOSE: Congenital microtia is a complex maxillofacial malformation with various risk factors. This study aimed to find potential pathogenic noncoding RNAs for congenital microtia patients.
METHODS: We collected 3 pairs of residual ear cartilage samples and corresponding normal ear cartilage samples from nonsyndromic congenital microtia patients for microarray experiments. The differentially expressed RNAs were screened, and enrichment analysis and correlation expression analysis were performed to elucidate the function of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We further investigated th

BACKGROUND: Various surgical methods have been used for reconstruction of an amputated ear, including microsurgical replantation and delayed reconstruction using synthetic material or autologous rib cartilage. The authors share our experience of immediate reconstruction using amputated cartilage and discuss the advantages compared to other techniques of reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 3 patients who underwent immediate reconstruction of amputated ear by a single operator. In the cases, the amputees were washed; the skin and ca

BACKGROUND: Microtia is a congenital ear hypoplasia associated with auricular defects. Conventional treatment involves implanted costal cartilage. The impact of surgical invasion and donor-site morbidity can be particularly severe in pediatric patients, and the collectable volume of autologous cartilage is limited. The authors therefore developed a new technique for microtia and applied it to treat four patients.
METHODS: Through the development of a multilayer chondrocyte culture system and two-stage implantation technique, the authors successfully generated human ears. In culture, the chond

Traumatic ear amputation secondary to human ear-bite is one of the common emergencies. If left untreated, it results in a deformity that causes social embarrassment and stigmatizes the victim. This case study documents primary ear reconstruction with "spare-part" amputated cartilage in a middle-aged, diabetic male after 24 hours of amputation. This reconstruction was performed using modified Mladick's Pocket technique in three stages over 90 days. There was complete cartilage take. Partial flap necrosis was managed conservatively. Over 18 months, the ear settled well and was nearly symmetrical

Prominent ears are a common deformity that can cause significant social and psychological distress, especially at a young age. Otoplasty changes the shape and, in some cases, the size of the ear, by working on two crucial points of the anatomy: the hypertrophy of the conchal bowl and the undeveloped antihelix fold. Generally speaking, there are two main approaches to auriculoplasty: cartilage cutting and cartilage sparing techniques; cartilage sparing techniques are safer but with limited aesthetic results. Despite the simplicity of this surgery, complications such as irreversible distortion o

Appreciating an imcomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of cauliflower ear, an experimental study was designed to demonstrate the pathophysiology of this deformity. The investigation was conducted in 2-month-old rabbits. In one ear a collection of blood was placed under the raised perichondrium which was then sutured back in place and the skin closed. In the other ear an equal amount of blood was deposited between the intact perichondrium and skin. In the first study new cartilage developed under the perichondrium, but in the ear in which the blood was left above the surface of the perich

Bony and cartilage defects of the nose should be reconstructed for both esthetic and functional purposes. In the past, autogenous bones, such as rib bones, cranial bones, and other bone grafts, have been used to reconstruct bony defects of the nose. Rib and ear cartilage have been used to reconstruct cartilage defects of the nose. A congenital subtotal bony-cartilaginous defect of the nose was reconstructed using cranial bone for the nasal bony defect, ear cartilage for the tip cartilage deficiency, and rib cartilage for the septal defect, in the present patient.

The behaviour of the cells in free periosteal graft was studied in growing rabbits in three chondrotrophic recipient milieus: costal cartilage, ear cartilage and synovial fluid of the knee joint. The periosteal grafts first formed cartilage, which was then quite rapidly transformed into bone on the costal cartilage, quite slowly and in smaller amounts in the ear cartilage, whereas no bone was found in the cartilaginous loose bodies formed in the knee joint. In bone formation vascularization plays a major role, but other factors are also involved.

HYPOTHESIS: Optical clearing agents (OCAs) can render cartilage tympanoplasty grafts sufficiently transparent to permit visualization of middle ear structures in an operated ear using optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.
METHODS: Pieces of human tragal cartilage were treated with glycerol, a commonly used OCA. A reference reflector was imaged with OCT through the tympanoplasty as it cleared and the optical attenuation of the graft was measured. The reversibility of clearing and the dimensional changes associated with glycerol absorption were also measured. In a separate experiment, a h

Auricular perichondritis is a severe bacterial inflammation of the cartilaginous part of the external ear sparing the lobule and the tragus. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid necrosis of the underlying cartilage and permanent auricular deformity. Management includes antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Surgery to control the inflammation is sometimes necessary. Wide cartilage and subcutaneous tissue debridement with preservation of the helical rim to minimize the resulting auricular deformity is necessary.

Until recently the options for reconstruction of the microtic ear were unsatisfactory and the ear was often left alone. With recent advances, both autologous rib reconstruction and osseointegration produce good quality results. It is our practice to offer all patients a choice of no surgery, autologous rib cartilage reconstruction or an osseointegrated prosthetic ear. This study reports on parental choice between the reconstructive options as assessed by questionnaire. Earlier patients who have had their surgery were compared with more recent patients who have chosen an option but are awaiting

It has been long considered that air and bone are the two major mediators that conduct sounds to the inner ear. In 2004, Hosoi found that vibration of aural cartilage, generated by placing gently a transducer on it, could create audible sound with the same level of clarity as air- and bone-conduction sound. He thus proposed the term "cartilage conduction" for this concept. This research identified a third mediator for sound conduction to the inner ear. Hosoi also proposed the development of novel communication devices, such as hearing aids, telephones, etc. using his findings. For cartilage co

BACKGROUND: Correction of prominent ears is one of the most common operations performed in congenital deformity. Many appropriate corrective techniques have been described. While rare, severe complications destroying ear contours can occur and their correction should follow the established principles of ear reconstruction.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the notes of all patients who presented to Clinique George Bizet (1981-2007) in Paris, for correction of complications after undergoing prominent ear surgery at another facility, was performed. Each patient's age, gender, diagnosis, number

CONTEXT: The traumatic loss of an ear greatly affects the patient because of the severe aesthetic deformity it entails. The characteristic format of the ear, with a fine skin covering a thin and elastic cartilage, is not found anywhere else in the human body. Thus, to reconstruct an ear, the surgeon may try to imitate it by sculpting cartilage and covering it with skin.
OBJECTIVE: To use a platysma myocutaneous flap for the reimplantation of a severed ear in humans.
DESIGN: Case report.
