Oncocytic papillary cystadenoma of the larynx: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cystadenoma of the salivary glands is a rare benign clinical condition affecting both major and minor salivary glands equally. It constitutes approximately 2% of total neoplasms and 4.2-4.7% of benign formations in minor salivary glands. Typically presenting as a slow-growing, painless neoplasm, it can be distinguished from Cystadenolymphoma (Whartin's Tumor) by the absence of lymphoid elements in histological examination. While mostly located in the oral cavity and oropharynx, it can also be found in sinonasal mucosa, and rare cases have been identified in the larynx. CASE PRESEN

Development of solitary plasmacytoma in the internal auditory canal and inner ear after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for plasma cell leukemia.

Here we report the first case of the development of intracranial solitary plasmacytoma in the inner ear after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) in a 39-year-old Japanese female with primary plasma cell leukemia (PCL). A point to note is that this is not a case on multiple myeloma but on PCL. She was successfully treated with local irradiation and survived more than 6 years from the time of diagnosis and transplantation. This case elucidates the biology of PCL and stresses the need for an individual approach to the clinical management of patients with plasma cell neoplasm undergoi

Diagnosis and treatment of small cell carcinoma of the larynx: a critical review.

Small cell carcinoma of the larynx is an uncommon neuroendocrine tumor with particular pathologic, therapeutic, and prognostic connotations. The first case of this lesion was observed in Canada in 1972. Fourteen cases of small cell carcinoma of the larynx were observed in the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Padua University in a series of 3,284 primary and secondary laryngeal and hypopharyngeal malignant neoplasms. This number constitutes the largest collection from a single institution in the literature and brings the total recorded cases to 66. The tumor is thought to arise from the argy

Primary extracranial meningiomas: an analysis of 146 cases.

Primary extracranial meningiomas are rare neoplasms, frequently misdiagnosed, resulting in inappropriate clinical management. To date, a large clinicopathologic study has not been reported. One hundred and forty-six cases diagnosed between 1970 and 1999 were retrieved from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Histologic features were reviewed, immunohistochemistry analysis was performed (n = 85), and patient follow-up was obtained (n = 110). The patients included 74 (50.7%) females and 72 (49.3%) males. Tumors of the skin were much more common in males than females (1.7:1). Th

Radiotherapy for a rare phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in the middle ear presenting with oncogenic osteomalacia: A case report.

RATIONALE: Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm causing oncogenic osteomalacia. Surgery remains the definitive treatment for PMT, and radiotherapy is seldom employed. However, surgery for PMT involving the head and neck is often difficult due to the local invasion and complicated anatomy. We report the first case of PMT, which was successfully treated with the combination of radiotherapy and supplementation of activated vitamin D. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old woman suffered from pain in the hip and bilateral femur. Serum phosphate and calcium decreased to abnormal levels

Histological and molecular characterization of endolymphatic sac tumor reveals key differences from its primary differential diagnosis, choroid plexus papilloma.

Endolymphatic sac tumors (ELSTs) are rare, slow-growing neoplasms of the inner ear. Microscopically, they exhibit papillary-cystic and glandular histomorphology, closely resembling their primary differential diagnosis, choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). Through in-depth histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis, we identified distinct characteristics of ELST that facilitate its identification and aid in differentiating it from CPP. Immunohistochemical staining that best discriminated between ELST and CPP included EMA, S-100 protein, EpCAM, cytokeratin, transthyretin, CD34, PTEN, P

Dasatinib-induced Seborrheic Dermatitis-like Eruption.

Dasatinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for imatinib-resistant chronic myelogenous leukemia. It has been investigated in treating other neoplasms, including non-small-cell lung cancer and a subset of melanomas. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by erythematous patches or plaques with scaling typically affecting the external ear, glabella, hair-bearing areas of the face, nasolabial fold, and scalp. Antitumor agents are often associated with mucocutaneous side effects, including seborrheic dermatitis. We describe the case of a 79-year-old woman with a history of sinonasal me

Carotid body tumor associated with complete heart block: A rare case report with long-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid body tumor (CBT) is one of the most common paragangliomas in the head and neck region, accounting for only 0.6 % of tumors in this area. Here, we present a rare case of CBT associated with congenital complete heart block (CHB). CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old female with a history of left neck and ear pain, accompanied by a gradually enlarging neck mass over 2.5 years. Following initial evaluations and multiple differential diagnoses, CT angiography revealed an oval-shaped mass measuring 30 × 50 mm at the left carotid bifurcation, confirming a Sham

[Coexistence of acoustic neuroma and pineal region tumor in patient with sudden deafness].

Acoustic neuroma usually presents as an unilateral tumor, seldom - bilateral and rarely in coexistence with other central nervous system neoplasms. The following paper reports such a case of a 21-year-old male patient presented with sudden deafness in left ear accompanied with tinnitus and vertigo. Symptoms started 4 weeks prior hospitalization. Their aggravation has been observed 7 days before admission to the hospital. Audiometry revealed moderate sensorineural hearing loss in left ear (for low and middle frequencies), brainstem auditory evoked potentials were absent on the left side and ENG

[Temporal bone surgery and requirements for radiology].

BACKGROUND: Perioperative imaging plays a central role in otorhinolaryngology, particularly in procedures involving the complex temporal bone. Detailed understanding and precise depiction of its specialised anatomy are essential to minimise risks during surgical interventions and to optimise surgical planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article highlights the value of cross-sectional imaging, primarily computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in the context of surgical challenges, critical aspects in the assessment of inflammatory conditions, the planning of middle ear

Twenty years of experience with lesions involving the temporomandibular joint and adjacent structures complex.

With their close anatomical relationship, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), mandibular ramus, skull base, ear, and infratemporal fossa make up a complex structure that may collectively be referred to as the 'TMJ and adjacent structures complex' (TASC). This study presents the neoplasms that may be encountered in the TASC region and their classification, which may be useful for the surgical treatment. Data of 1022 consecutive patients treated with resection of TASC neoplasms from May 2000 to October 2022 were reviewed. Pathology outcomes were classified according to the World Health Organizati

Posterior fossa neoplasm and PHACES syndrome: a case report.

A 4-year-old girl with PHACES syndrome (posterior fossa brain malformations, hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac anomalies/coarctation of the aorta, eye abnormalities, and sternal clefting/supraumbilical raphe) developed a cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma 18 months after resolution of her neck, ear, and thoracic hemangiomas. Because cutaneous hemangiomas may have involuted by the time a patient is diagnosed with a central nervous system neoplasm, it seems possible that in other such patients the association may have gone unrecognized. Cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma may be a rare manifes

External auditory canal sebaceous carcinoma.

The incidence of sebaceous carcinoma (SC) in the outer one-third of the external auditory canal is considered extremely rare, and only eight case reports have been published. We present a case of a male patient in his late 70s known case of hypertension on indapamide. His medical history included a postspinal tumour that had been treated with surgery and radiation more than 40 years ago and current complaints of right ear pain and purulent discharge. A right ear soft granular tissue mass was found. Complete debulking of the right ear mass was done in conjunction with middle ear exploration, mo

Surgical management of skin cancer and trauma involving the middle third of the auricle.

The main causes of acquired auricular defects are surgical treatment of skin tumors and trauma. Due to the complex anatomy of the external ear, surgical reconstruction of defects in this area is challenging for surgeons, especially in case of midhelix-antihelix involvement with significant loss of soft tissue and cartilage. Our purpose is to illustrate the main reconstructive techniques of large midhelix and antihelix defects, as well as the advantages or disadvantages associated with each surgical procedure. Primary closure/wedge technique is mainly used in elderly, multimorbid subjects where

New primary neoplasms of the central nervous system in survivors of childhood cancer: a report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Subsequent primary neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) have frequently been described as late events following childhood leukemia and brain tumors. However, the details of the dose-response relationships, the expression of excess risk over time, and the modifying effects of other host and treatment factors have not been well defined. METHODS: Subsequent primary neoplasms of the CNS occurring within a cohort of 14,361 5-year survivors of childhood cancers were ascertained. Each patient was matched with four control subjects by age, sex, and time since original cancer diag
