Fetal ear malformations induced by maternal ingestion of thalidomide in the bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata).

Gross malformations of the external, middle, and internal ear were seen in fetal monkeys following maternal ingestion of thalidomide. Twenty-five pregnant bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) were each given a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg of thalidomide on day 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, or 29, or 30 mg/kg on day 25 or 28 of gestation. (Day of mating is assumed to be day zero of pregnancy). The skeletons, processed and stained with Alizarin Red S, were examined for changes in configuration and/or ossification of the ossicles and temporal bones. Bilateral temporal bones of one case, treated on day 24, were

High Heterogeneity of Temporal Bone CT Aspects in Osteogenesis Imperfecta Is Not Linked to Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether temporal bone computed tomography (CT) features are linked to the presence and type of hearing loss in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) when considering hearing-impaired OI patients and normally hearing (NH) OI ones. A secondary objective was to assess whether other factors influence CT features in a large sample: age, type of mutation, or bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: A total of 41 adults with OI underwent CTs and pure-tone audiometry in 82 ears. Hearing thresholds were normal in 64 out of 82 ears, and most had not been operated on for stapedectomy or stap

Unilateral fixation of the ossicular chain associated with G-group chromosome deletion.

Unilateral fixation of the middle ear ossicles and possible delayed pubescence were associated with a short-arm deletion of one of the G-group chromosomes in a 15-year-old Negro girl. A similar chromosomal abnormality was found in the mother and three of six siblings without any clinical evidence of middle ear disease. The association of G-group deletions with other hereditary disease of bone suggests, however, that a pathogenic relationship may exist between them.

Fibrous dysplasia limited to an ossicle.

Fibrous dysplasia is an unusual pathologic condition caused by abnormal bone metabolism. Temporal bone involvement is often seen, but it is uncommon to find fibrous dysplasia limited to the middle ear, especially originating in and confined to a single ossicle. Here we report a case of osteofibrous dysplasia limited exclusively to an ossicle (malleus) causing gradual conductive hearing loss, which recovered after eventual complete removal of the dysplastic area. The lesion showed firm attachment to adjacent structures and initial removal was not possible. This report provides information to he

"Ontogenetic Scaling of the Primate Middle Ear".

The study of primate auditory morphology is a significant area of interest for comparative anatomists, given the phylogenetic relationships that link primate hearing and the morphology of these auditory structures. Extensive literature addresses the form-to-function relationship of the auditory system (outer, middle, and inner ear) in primates and, by extension, provides insight into the auditory system of extinct primates and even modern humans. We add to this literature by describing the ontogenetic trajectory of the middle ear cavity and ossicular chain (malleus, incus, and stapes) due to t

Diagnostic and Imaging Findings in Inflammatory Opacifications of the Middle Ear: A Review of the Literature.

Opacification in the middle ear and mastoid region can stem from a wide range of factors. In terms of diagnostic imaging, CT is the primary tool due to its exceptional spatial resolution, particularly for examining the temporal bone and ossicles. MRI complements this by offering detailed soft tissue lesion characterization and assessing involvement in the inner ear and cranial nerves. This study focuses on inflammatory causes of opacification in the middle ear and mastoid, with an emphasis on the utility of CT and MRI. This comprehensive review aimed to provide a practical framework for consid

Morphological and morphometrical aspects of the auditory ossicles in goat (Capra hircus).

The present paper deals with a detailed description of the auditory ossicles in Capra hircus. The paper focuses on the morphological and morphometrical description of the ossicular assembly, formed by malleus, incus and stapes. The malleus (overall length, as average- 8.16 mm) comprises the head of malleus (Caput mallei), a slightly strictured part-neck (Collum mallei) with 3 distinctive processes (lateral, rostral and muscular) (Processus lateralis, Processus rostralis and Processus muscularis) and a handle (Manubrium mallei). The head of malleus has an oval aspect with an obtuse articular su

High Frequency Ex Vivo Ultrasound Imaging of the Middle Ear to Show Simulated Ossicular Pathology.

HYPOTHESIS: To illustrate the ability of high frequency ultrasound (HFUS) using a transducer array to demonstrate a variety of simulated clinical scenarios involving the ossicular chain. BACKGROUND: HFUS (>20 MHz) is a relatively new area of ultrasonic imaging that provides an order of magnitude better image resolution than the conventional low-frequency systems. HFUS may be a real-time imaging system that could be used in the clinic and would complement computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance the decision-making process for patients with middle ear pathology.

Histopathology of otosclerosis.

This histopathologic review illustrates that otosclerosis is a very pleomorphic bone dyscrasia. It may fix the stapes by a tiny bridge of abnormal bone or may totally obliterate it. It may spread to the cochlea to produce either a sensorineural loss of varying degree or deafness. Lesions may be sclerotic, spongiotic, or fibrous but usually comprise all these histologic types. This diversity of size and anatomic distribution coincides with the variable types of hearing loss, from a mild conductive deficit to a total loss. In spite of more than a century of investigation of otosclerosis, an etio

The incisor absent rat: an animal model for the study of otosclerosis.

The incisor absent (ia) rat is introduced as an animal model for the study of otosclerosis. Previous animal models have failed to accurately reflect the dynamic nature of this disease. Auditory brainstem response testing suggested a conductive hearing loss in the incisor absent rat as compared to age-matched normal controls. The hearing loss, which was manifested during puberty, was progressive in nature up to 18 weeks of age. Microscopic dissection of the middle ear revealed bony abnormalities of the ossicles and oval window in the incisor absent rat. Scanning electron microscopy of the ossic

Ossicular Chain Reconstruction in a Developing Country.

OBJECTIVES: In Ethiopia, 2-stage operations with middle ear prostheses are economically unfavorable. We hypothesized that single-stage autologous ossiculoplasty results in acceptable tympanic membrane (TM) and hearing improvements in a setting of limited resources. METHODS: One hundred eighty-eight patients (197 ears) who underwent 1-stage autologous ossiculoplasty for ossicular dysfunction are presented. All but 14 of these ears also had perforations of the TM. Conditions of the middle ear were granulation tissue, ossicular disruption only, tympanosclerosis, and cholesteatoma. Reconstruction

[Morphologic studies of autologous and homologous ossicles after long-term implantation].

BACKGROUND: Although ossicular bone implants have been used to restore the middle ear sound conduction mechanism for more than 30 years, controversy still exists regarding their morphology after long-term implantation. METHODS: Fifty-seven ossicular implants that had been in the middle ear for a mean duration of 12 years (ranged from 3-33 years) were removed at the time of revision surgery and prepared for histological study by light microscopy. These revision operations were performed because of failure to control the disease and/or persistent or recurring hearing loss. Each ossicle was exam

Functional middle ear reconstruction: experience with prostheses and tissue graft.

The transmission of sound to the internal ear passes across the tympanic membrane to vibrate the ossicle chain formed by the malleus, incus and stapes. Movements of the stapes footplate set up complex wave formation within the cochlear fluids to excite the sensory nerve endings of the organ of Corti. Microsurgery for the relief of middle ear deafness has been progressively developed since 1946 and is concerned with the restoration of this collection of sound by an intact flexible ear drum and transmission of oscillation across the middle ear by a free, mobile chain of ossicles. Otosclerosis is

Accessory tympanic plate ossicle: a new osteological entity.

The auricular cartilage, which is typically soft and flexible, can calcify or ossify because of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, trauma, radiation therapy for cancer, and more commonly from frostbite. Calcified, ossified, or hardened auricular cartilage is a rare finding in the clinical literature and appears to be absent in the physical and forensic anthropological literature. This study examines the ossified auricular cartilage and tests whether the hypothesis can be identified in postmortem skeletonized tissue and be part of the external auditory meatus. A total of 290 crania were examin

Pinna anomalies associated with congenital conductive hearing loss.

This paper compares the normal pinna with the abnormal congenitally malformed pinna. Then the abnormal pinna is related to case histories where a hearing loss was found due to a congenital malformation of the middle ear ossicles. Careful examination of the pinna, therefore, may be a simple diagnostic sign of an underlying potentially surgically correctable hearing loss. An abnormal pinna is more often associated with a middle ear anomaly than with any other congenital malformation including a urinary tract anomaly.

Potential for Radiation Dose Reduction in Temporal Bone CT Imaging Using Photon-Counting Detector CT.

Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) is frequently performed for pediatric patients with ear diseases. Advances in CT technology have improved diagnostic imaging quality, but reduction of radiation exposure remains a goal. We evaluated the potential for radiation dose reduction in temporal bone CT examinations using porcine ear ossicles and a photon-counting detector CT system. Three scans of the bilateral temporal bone were performed on each of three pig cadaver heads. In each of seven successive imaging sessions, the radiation dose was reduced by an additional one-seventh of the recommende
