Using ecological momentary assessments to predict relapse after adult substance use treatment.

BACKGROUND: A key component of relapse prevention is to self-monitor the internal (feelings or cravings) and external (people, places, activities) factors associated with relapse. Smartphones can deliver ecological momentary assessments (EMA) to help individuals self-monitor. The purpose of this exploratory study was to develop a model for predicting an individual's risk of future substance use after each EMA and validate it using a multi-level model controlling for repeated measures on persons. METHODS: Data are from 21,897 observations from 43 adults following their initial episode of subst

Ecological momentary assessment of antecedents and consequences of smoking in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The current study assessed antecedents and consequences of ad lib cigarette smoking in smokers diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Adult smokers with ADHD (n = 17) completed 870 smoking and 622 nonsmoking electronic diary entries over a 7-day observation period of their naturalistic smoking behavior. Data collection occurred from 2011 to 2012. Generalized estimating equations indicated that ADHD smokers were more likely to smoke when urge to smoke, negative affect, boredom, stress, worry, and restlessness were elevated. In

Parenting in Moments: An Ecological Momentary Assessment of Parenting and Adolescent Substance Use and Externalizing Behaviors.

A large body of traditional survey and lab-based research has found that parenting behaviors are associated with risk for substance use (SU) and externalizing symptoms in adolescents. It is presumed that parenting effects on adolescent SU and symptoms unfold within families over moments in everyday life. However, this has rarely been tested. The present ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study tested within-person momentary associations among parenting, adolescent emotional and reward arousal, and SU and externalizing symptoms. Eighty-four 14-18 year olds completed five surveys per day for

Dietary ecological momentary assessments: validation against food diaries and associations with health biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Digital approaches that capture dietary behavior repeatedly in real-world settings may improve the monitoring of long-term lifestyle interventions while reducing participant burden and supporting self-awareness. This study developed and evaluated a low-burden dietary ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol to monitor Mediterranean diet adherence during the 12-month PENSA multimodal lifestyle trial in older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline. METHODS: A total of 104 participants aged 60-80 years with subjective cognitive decline and APOE-ε4 carrier status were inc

An ecological momentary assessment study of predictors for alcohol outcomes in transgender and gender diverse youth.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study examined how gender minority stressors and resilience experienced by transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth relate to daily and momentary occurrences of alcohol use risk processes (e.g., alcohol craving, drinking motives, and distress), alcohol use, and alcohol-related harms. The feasibility of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was evaluated. METHODS: Forty TGD youth (mean 22.42 years [SD = 3.03]; range 18-29) completed a baseline interview followed by 21 days of EMA. Daily morning surveys assessed stressors and resilience, alcohol risk processes, use a

Predicting a short-term change of suicidal ideation in inpatients with depression: An ecological momentary assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with depression often require inpatient treatment due to their high suicide risk. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies have shown that suicidal ideation (SI) fluctuates over time. As affective instability and psychological pain (PP) are common experiences in borderline personality disorder (BPD), often comorbid with depression, we examined factors predicting short-term changes of SI in depressive inpatients with or without BPD. METHODS: Psychiatric inpatients with depression with (N = 30) or without (N = 37) comorbid BPD assessed their anxiety, PP, severity of

Ecological momentary assessments of cognitive dysfunction and passive suicidal ideation among college students.

Cognitive dysfunction (CD), inclusive of specific cognitive content (e.g., hopelessness, unbearability) or impaired cognitive processes (e.g., attentional fixation on suicide, rumination), is a key risk factor for suicidal ideation (SI). This study aimed to evaluate multiple forms of CD using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to determine the unique contributions of CD to concurrent and prospective SI. Fifty-five college students with a history of SI or non-suicidal self-injury completed EMA surveys measuring momentary CD and passive SI ("Wish to Die" [WTD], "Wish to Stay Alive" [WTL]) fou

Does Tinnitus Depend on Time-of-Day? An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study with the "TrackYourTinnitus" Application.

Only few previous studies used ecological momentary assessments to explore the time-of-day-dependence of tinnitus. The present study used data from the mobile application "TrackYourTinnitus" to explore whether tinnitus loudness and tinnitus distress fluctuate within a 24-h interval. Multilevel models were performed to account for the nested structure of assessments (level 1: 17,209 daily life assessments) nested within days (level 2: 3,570 days with at least three completed assessments), and days nested within participants (level 3: 350 participants). Results revealed a time-of-day-dependence

Environmental Context and Reporting Completeness of Event-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment in Cigarette and Cannabis Use.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows researchers to capture substance use as it occurs in daily life, but participants may not report every use event. Little is known about whether the environments where people spend time affect the completeness of these reports. METHODS: We examined how consistently young adults reported cigarette and cannabis use through event-based EMA and whether reporting differed by the social vulnerability of places they visited. We analysed 30 days of GPS-enabled EMA and daily diary data from 34 young adults in California (730 participant days).

Ecological Momentary Assessment as a Measure of Intervention Change: Evaluation in 4 Digital Mental Health Trials.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is increasingly being incorporated into intervention studies to acquire a more fine-grained and ecologically valid assessment of change. The added utility of including relatively burdensome EMA measures in a clinical trial hinges on several psychometric assumptions, including that these measure are (1) reliable, (2) related to but not redundant with conventional self-report measures (convergent and discriminant validity), (3) sensitive to intervention-related change, and (4) associated with a clinically relevant criterion of improvement (criter

Real-time mechanism-based interventions for daily alcohol challenges: Protocol for ecological momentary assessment and intervention.

BACKGROUND: Advancing evidence-based, tailored interventions for substance use disorders (SUDs) requires understanding temporal directionality while upholding ecological validity. Previous studies identified loneliness and craving as pivotal factors associated with alcohol consumption, yet the precise directionality of these relationships remains ambiguous. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to establish a smartphone-based real-life intervention platform that integrates momentary assessment and intervention into everyday life. The platform will explore the temporal directionality of contextual influe

Modeling the reciprocal dynamic between alcohol and suicide urges among college students: Ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use is associated with suicidal thoughts, urges, and behavior. However, prior research has been mostly cross-sectional, limiting understanding of how these variables influence one another across short time periods. The present study used ecological momentary assessment methods to establish the temporal ordering of alcohol- and suicide-related phenomena, specifically exploring the momentary dynamic between these variables. METHOD: A diverse sample of college students (N = 527, 50.5% Asian, 72.0% cisgender female, Mage = 19.4) completed smartphone ecological momentary assessm

Predicting Participation Willingness in Ecological Momentary Assessment of General Population Health and Behavior: Machine Learning Study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is widely used in health research to capture individuals' experiences in the flow of daily life. The majority of EMA studies, however, rely on nonprobability sampling approaches, leaving open the possibility of nonrandom participation concerning the individual characteristics of interest in EMA research. Knowledge of the factors that predict participation in EMA research is required to evaluate this possibility and can also inform optimal recruitment strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the extent to which being willing to partic
