Relative effect of socio-economic status on the health-related quality of life in type 2 diabetic patients in Iran.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressing epidemic and a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The quality of life (QoL) of diabetic patients has been strongly influenced by socioeconomic status (SES) in developed countries. Therefore, the QoL improvement is considered to be a major goal in diabetes control program. In this context, there is no reliable evidence for developing countries. In this study, the relative association of SES with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed in patients with T2DM in Iran. METHOD: The "Cost estimation o

Childhood socio-economic status and the onset, persistence, and severity of DSM-IV mental disorders in a US national sample.

Although significant associations between childhood socio-economic status (SES) and adult mental disorders have been widely documented, SES has been defined using several different indicators often considered alone. Little research has examined the relative importance of these different indicators in accounting for the overall associations of childhood SES with adult outcomes. Nor has previous research distinguished associations of childhood SES with first onsets of mental disorders in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood from those with persistence of these disorders into adulthood in accoun

[Distribution of Enterobius vermicularis among the schoolchildren of two primary schools with different social-economic status in the Ankara province].

In this study, 207 cellophane-tape specimens were taken from children at two different primary schools in Ankara province. Twenty two out of 207 samples were positive for Enterobius vermicularis (10.6%). A questionnaire including the major factors affecting the distribution of E. vermicularis such as the students' ages, genders and socio-economic status was made. No relationship was found between children's gender and E. vermicularis infection, whereas a higher infection rate was seen in the low-income families. When the 6-9 age group was taken into consideration, the incidence of E. vermicula

Head and neck cancer in the South West of England: influence of socio-economic status on incidence and second primary tumours.

This study examined possible links between the incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and social deprivation. Data on all HNSCC registered between 1985 and 1991 in the South West of England were collected. Excluding tumours of the lip and skin there were 1570 cases, 72% in males. Of these, 1467 were identified as first primary tumours. Corrected chi-squared tests, accepting significance at the 5% level, were used to examine the association of socio-economic status (Carstairs index) with incidence at different sites. Overall, the incidence of HNSCC was higher in the socially

Risks of testicular cancer and cryptorchidism in relation to socio-economic status and related factors: case-control studies in Denmark.

To explore risk factors for testicular cancer and cryptorchidism, 2 parallel case-control studies were conducted in Denmark. The testicular-cancer study was population-based and included 514 cases and 720 controls. The cryptorchidism study included 387 cases and 416 controls and was based on 2 hospital series of men treated for cryptorchidism and a control group sampled among residents in the Copenhagen area. The 2037 men were interviewed by telephone, and self-administered questionnaires were sent to their mothers. A strong association was seen between low social class and cryptorchidism, wit

Influence of socio-economic status on Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection incidence, risk factors and clinical features.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection can cause serious illness including haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The role of socio-economic status (SES) in differential clinical presentation and exposure to potential risk factors amongst STEC cases has not previously been reported in England. We conducted an observational study using a dataset of all STEC cases identified in England, 2010-2015. Odds ratios for clinical characteristics of cases and foodborne, waterborne and environmental risk factors were estimated using logistic regression, stratified by SES, adjusting for baseline dem

Rural-to-urban migration, socio-economic status and cardiovascular diseases risk factors among Bangladeshi adults: A nationwide population based survey.

BACKGROUND: Rural-to-urban migration is one of the key drivers of urbanization in Bangladesh and may impact on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk due to lifestyle changes. This study examined whether CVD risk factors were associated with migration to and duration of urban life, considering socio-economic indicators. METHODS: A total of 27,792 participants (18-59 years) from the 2006 Bangladesh cross-sectional Urban Health Survey were included in the analyses of whom 14,167 (M: 7,278; W: 6,889) were non-migrant urban residents and 13,625 (M: 6,413; W: 7,212) were rural-to-urban migrants. Health behaviour, social support, socio-economic status and the 5-year progression of multimorbidity: Results from the MultiCare Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity in elderly patients is a major challenge for physicians, because of a high prevalence of and associations with many adverse outcomes. However, the mechanisms of progressing multimorbidity are not well-understood. The aim of our study was to determine if the progression of multimorbidity is influenced by health behaviour and social support and to analyse if the patients' socio-economic status had an effect on these prognostic factors. METHODS: The study was designed as prospective cohort study based on interviews of 158 GPs and 3189 patients randomly selected from GP

Socioeconomic status and economic hardship attenuated the associations between early tobacco or nicotine use and brain outcomes in preadolescent children.

OBJECTIVES: Early tobacco use (before age 11) is linked to poorer cognition and reduced cortical surface area and volume in young adolescents. This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES) factors - parental education, household income, and economic hardships - influenced these associations. METHODS: Using baseline (N=11,876) and year 3 (N=10,414) datasets from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, we assessed the impact of baseline tobacco/nicotine use initiation on cognitive scores, cortical volume, thickness, and surface area across the entire cohort and in propensity-matc

Training of parental scaffolding in high-socio-economic status families: How do parents of full- and preterm-born toddlers benefit?

BACKGROUND: Preterm children have an increased risk regarding self-regulation development. Given the strong link between parenting behaviour (i.e., scaffolding and sensitivity) and children's self-regulation, parental training presents a promising way to counteract the negative consequences of preterm birth. AIMS: We explored the effectiveness of parental training by comparing a basic scaffolding training and a combined scaffolding/sensitivity training to an active treatment-control group (stress management). Basic and combined treatments should increase parents' domain-specific self-efficacy
