INTRODUCTION: Environmental pollutants are increasingly recognized as critical modulators of fish immune-associated alterations, with significant implications for aquaculture sustainability. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a persistent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, represents a major aquatic contaminant capable of inducing immunotoxic effects in early life stages of fish.
METHODS: Larvae of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were exposed to 1, 10, and 100 µmol/L B[a]P for 14 days to investigate the impact of B[a]P on hemato-immunological alterations, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and histopatholog

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), intensified by climate change, eutrophication, and altered hydrological regimes, are expanding globally, releasing cyanotoxins that threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), a non-protein amino acid with neurotoxic potential, has been recognized as a global emerging concern. Following exposure, BMAA is present in both free and protein-bound forms, forming an endogenous toxin reservoir that exacerbates potential neurotoxicity in aquatic organisms and humans. Its presence in aquatic food webs not only elevates ecological risks fo

Environmental contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial pollutants exert profound effects on the biology, behavior, and ecology of disease vectors, especially Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. These effects complicate control strategies and enhance the risk of insecticide resistance, thereby influencing the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on how pollutants alter vector development, survival, reproduction, and host-seeking behaviors, often in synergy with insecticide exposure. Notably, sublethal contaminant level

In laboratory trials, sulfluramid (N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide; EtFOSA) has been shown to degrade into perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) under aerobic conditions, including in Brazilian agricultural soils. Thus, we aimed to investigate the environmental occurrence of PFOS in agricultural areas mostly used for forestry, where sulfluramid-based ant baits are primarily used. Surface water, groundwater, and sediment samples were collected from selected micro-watersheds, primarily used for forest plantation, and PFOS and its precursors were assessed by ultra-performance liquid chromatogra

Plastics are ubiquitous in modern society due to their cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and versatility. However, their extensive use and inadequate recycling have led to a significant environmental challenge, with plastic waste accumulating rapidly and causing ecological and health problems, especially in aquatic environments. Nanoplastics, particles ranging from 1 to 100 nm, have emerged as a particularly concerning subset due to their ability to easily penetrate biological barriers and accumulate in tissues. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of carboxylate-modified polystyr

Extensive application of nanomaterials enlarges its concentrations in the aquatic environments and poses a threat to algae. This study comprehensively analyzed the physiological and transcriptional responses of Chlorella sp. after being exposed to chromium (III) oxide nanoparticles (nCr2O3). The nCr2O3 at 0-100 mg/L presented adverse effects on cell growth (96 h EC50 = 16.3 mg/L), decreasing the photosynthetic pigment concentrations and photosynthetic activity. Moreover, more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially polysaccharides in soluble EPS, were produced in algae cell, which

Fungi are known to be present in the activated sludge of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Their study should be at the base of an overall vision of the plant effectiveness and of effluents sanitary impact. Moreover, it could be fundamental for the implementation of successful bioaugmentation strategies aimed at the removal of recalcitrant or toxic compounds. This is one of the first studies on the cultivable autochthonous mycoflora present in the mixed liquors of two WWTP treating either vegetable or chromium tannery effluents. All samples showed a risk associated with potential pathogens o

A model was designed and calibrated with accumulation data to calculate the internal concentrations of microcontaminants in organisms as a function of a few constants and variables. The main factors are the exposure time, the external exposure concentration, the partition ratio of the compound, and the size of the taxon concerned. The model was applied to calculate the lethal and sublethal body burdens of several priority compounds and some major taxa. Estimations were generally confirmed at the order of magnitude level by measured residues and applied doses if available. According to the esti

Plant-mediated 'green' synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) is widely reported, but the exact functional role of the retained phytochemical capping layer versus the core metal remains contested. Furthermore, the impact of thermal calcination-a common post-synthesis purification step-on the bio-functional and ecological profile of these NPs is poorly understood. We synthesized four distinct biogenic NPs-Ag and Fe using Salvinia molesta extract, and Cu and Zn using Mimosa pigra extract. While the Cu, Zn, and Fe NPs were evaluated in both non-calcined (as-synthesized) and thermally calcined states, t

In 2020, the largest continuous wetland area on the planet, the Brazilian Pantanal, experienced an unprecedented fire that affected the entire ecosystem. Our goal was to elucidate the effects of ash presence following the fire events. We quantified the impact of ashes, collected in four Conservation Units, on soil, water, and atmosphere. On the edaphic system, we tested the impact through behavioral and acute toxicity tests using annelids exposed to contaminated soil at different ash concentrations. We assessed the effect of ash on the flux of soil greenhouse gases. In the water, we examined t

Cyanobacterial blooms are becoming increasingly frequent and intense worldwide, often dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, a species capable of producing a wide array of bioactive metabolites beyond microcystins. This study evaluates the ecotoxicological potential of a non-microcystin-producing strain, M. aeruginosa CCIBt3106, using acute immobilization assays with three microcrustacean species: Daphnia similis, Artemia salina, and Parhyale hawaiensis. Biomass was extracted using solvents of varying polarity, and selected extracts (aqueous and 50% methanol) were further fractionated and analyz

This study investigated the multilevel effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of fluoxetine on serotonergic signaling and enteric neurogenesis in early zebrafish larvae (Danio rerio). To this end, zebrafish were exposed to various concentrations of fluoxetine for four days, from the 1,000-cell stage to 4 days post-fertilization (dpf).Following exposure, whole larvae were subjected to molecular, morphological, and behavioral analyses. All tested concentrations led to upregulation of the serotonin transporter (slc6a4a). At intermediate concentrations, overexpression of the serotonin

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) for rodent control has resulted in widespread exposure of non-target animals, with notable differences in susceptibility between species. Vitamin K reserves, which are essential for counteracting AR-induced coagulopathy, may partly explain this variability. This study assessed vitamin K status in 678 animals representing 31 mammalian and avian species. Hepatic concentrations of phylloquinone (K1) and menaquinone-4 (MK4) levels were quantified, revealing substantial interspecies variation influenced by dietary patterns and seasonal changes.

The increasing use of veterinary pharmaceuticals, like mebendazole, raises ecological concerns due to their environmental persistence and non-target toxicity, which may negatively affect biodiversity. While its antiparasitic efficacy is well-established, its ecotoxicological effects on non-target gastropods remain unexplored. Here, we identified mebendazole's strong toxicity to freshwater snails, including Pomacea canaliculata (LC₅₀=0.307 mg/L), Biomphalaria glabrata (0.110 mg/L), Biomphalaria straminea (0.138 mg/L) and Cipangopaludina cathayensis (0.205 mg/L), with marked species selectivity,

Soil arthropods are pivotal in maintaining soil health and serve as sensitive indicators of soil alterations. The soil arthropod community in the Mefite Geological Site (Italy), characterized by a sulphurous lake and intense degassing, was the focus of this study. In details, the objectives were: i) to characterize soil arthropod community at different distances from the Mefite lake; ii) to identify resilient taxa acting as bioindicators to assess soil ecotoxicity. Soil cores were collected at A) 30m, B) 80m, C) 120m away from the lake; soil organic matter (SOM), and pH, ecotoxicity tests (Lep

Novel psychoactive substances (NPS), such as Esketamine (Esket), often contaminate the aquatic ecosystems following human consumption, raising concerns about the residues and potential ecological hazards to non-target organisms. The study used zebrafish as a model organism to investigate the developmental toxicity and ecotoxicological effects of acute Esket exposure. Our findings demonstrate that exposure to Esket significantly affected the early development and angiogenesis of zebrafish embryos/larvae. The mandible length was significantly decreased, and the angles between the pharyngeal arch

This study introduces an indigenous bacterial strain, Exiguobacterium sp. (L.O), isolated from sugarcane fields in Sevur, Tamil Nadu, which has adapted to prolonged exposure to dimethoate. The strain demonstrated the capability to utilize 150 ppm of dimethoate as its sole carbon source, achieving a remarkable degradation rate of 95.87% within 5 days in mineral salt media. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses identified the presence of intermediate by-products formed during degradation, like methyl diethanol amine and aspartyl glycine ethyl ester. Notably, phosphorothioic O, O,
