The limb body wall complex is a rare congenital disorder that is marked by various anomalies such as thoracoschisis, gastroschisis, limb defects and exencephaly. These defects are not compatible with life and result in spontaneous abortion or stillbirth. It is important to diagnose the anomalies on time and counsel the patients extensively to make the right decision. In this case report, we present a woman in her early twenties pregnant with a fetus with multiple anomalies including ectopia cordis, gastroschisis, meningomyelocele, kyphoscoliosis and congenital talipes equinovarus diagnosed as

RATIONALE: Pentalogy of Cantrell, a very rare congenital condition, has an estimated incidence of 5.5 per 1 million live births. It includes five defects: a midline supraumbilical wall defect, a diaphragmatic defect, a cleft distal sternum, a defect in the diaphragmatic pericardium, and an intracardiac defect. Very few cases of this condition have been reported in the literature, most of them diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of pentalogy of Cantrell associated with cranioschisis and unilateral anophthalmia diagnosed at 14 weeks of am

Omphaloceles and left ventricular diverticulums are rare disorders. Although either is known to occur on its own, the combination is highly suggestive of the so-called pentalogy of Cantrell. This syndrome is a combination of deformities involving midline structures, with exteriorisation of the heart, or 'ectopia cordis', as the most severe malformation. A cause has yet to be identified, though genes located on the X-chromosome may be involved. We discuss a neonate who presented with an omphalocele and a palpable diverticulum of the left ventricle. An omphalocele, especially when above the umbi

Pentalogy of Cantrell (POC) is a rare condition characterized by complete or partial expression of 5 types of congenital birth defects originating in (1) the lower sternum, (2) the anterior diaphragm, (3) the diaphragmatic pericardium, (4) the midline/ventral supraumbilical abdominal wall region, and (5) the heart. POC can be diagnosed antenatally by means of ultrasonography (US), the task being difficult if defects are minor. Advances in the field of US and the introduction of the first morphology trimester as state-of-the-art pregnancy monitoring, facilitate the early diagnosis of this condi

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION. Pentalogy of Cantrell is a very rare congenital multiple malformation with the poor outcome. Syndrome included the following pentad: abdominal wall defect, a defect of the lower sternum, anterior diaphragm defect, ectopia cordis, as well as a variety of intracardiac anomalies.
CASE REPORT: In the fifteenth week of the twin pregnancy, ultrasound examination showed multiple anomalies in one, as well as the absence of the nose apex in the other twin. The autopsy of the fetuses was performed after the abortion had been approved by the Ethics Committee. The external exami

The pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by deficiency of the anterior diaphragm and defects of abdominal wall, the pericardium, the lower sternum, as well as congenital intracardiac abnormalities. It has usually a poor prognosis, but most cases have had incomplete variants of this syndrome, so it is important to make a prenatal diagnosis to determine the size of the wall defect and to establish a multidisciplinary management. Less than 90 cases have been reported in the world literature. There are no casuistic or even treatment criteria in Latin America. A case of

Dextrocardia was known in the 17th century and was 1 of the first congenital malformations of the heart to be recognized. Fifty years elapsed before Matthew Baillie published his account of complete transposition in a human of the thoracic and abdominal viscera to the opposite side from what is natural. In 1858, Thomas Peacock stated that "the heart may be congenitally misplaced in various ways, occupying either an unusual position within the thorax, or being situated external to that cavity." In 1915, Maude Abbott described ectopia cordis, and Richard Paltauf's remarkable illustrations distin

We report on a term stillborn female infant with multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) which have not previously been reported as occurring together. The malformations include a first and second branchial arch sequence, ectopia cordis with congenital heart defect, caudal "regression" sequence with absent sacrum and hypoplastic right femur, ectrodactyly, left radial abnormality, islet cell hyperplasia, and skin lesions. The pregnancy was complicated by abdominal cramping with exercise, heavy vaginal bleeding, maternal obesity, and a normal screening glucose tolerance test at 6 months gestation. T

Data base of our Department for Diagnosis & Prophylaxis of Congenital Malformations Research Institute Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital was analyzed for 1994-2001, including 7047 fetal echocardiographic examinations in 5196 fetuses. In 1861 pregnant women at least one congenital malformation was diagnosed. There were 68% of low risk pregnancies and 32% of high risk pregnancies. The majority of fetal malformations were central nervous system malformations (25%) and congenital heart defects (23%). Fetal cardiac anomalies were analyzed both in singleton and multiple pregnancies. The most common

BACKGROUND: Clinical and surgical aspects of sternal cleft repair are presented. Primary repair in the neonatal period is the best management for this rare condition, but none of the patients in this report were referred to us during that period. Autologous repair is suitable for older patients because it avoids problems related to the implant of prosthetic materials.
METHODS: This article reviews 8 cases of sternal cleft not associated with ectopia cordis in patients presenting between October 1979 and November 1997. Surgical repair consisted of three sliding chondrotomies, three posterior s

OBJECTIVE: To describe the feasibility of diagnosing fetal congenital heart defects by transvaginal ultrasonography during the first trimester of pregnancy.
METHODS: Pregnant women presenting to the Ultrasonographic Unit at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center who had a diagnosis of fetal heart defects were reviewed retrospectively. Attention was paid to prenatal ultrasound studies, karyotype, and pathologic examinations.
RESULTS: Using high-resolution transvaginal ultrasonography, we were able to detect fetal tachycardia (one case), ectopia cordis with ventricular septal defect (one case), atriov

The etiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is unclear and its pathogenesis is controversial. Because previous reports have inconsistently noted the type and frequency of malformations associated with CDH, we assessed these associated malformations ascertained between 1979 and 2003 in 334,262 consecutive births. Of the 115 patients with the most common type of CDH, the posterolateral, or Bochdalek-type hernia, 70 (60.8%) had associated malformations. These included: chromosomal abnormalities (n = 21, 30.0%); non-chromosomal syndromes (Fryns syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, De Lange

Abdominal wall defects are a complex group of anomalies, and many are incorrectly diagnosed. Evaluation of the defect relative to the umbilical cord insertion site is fundamentally important in differentiating among the various malformations. The two most common abdominal wall defects are gastroschisis, in which the defect is on the right side of the normally inserting cord and free-floating bowel loops are present, and omphalocele, in which the cord inserts on a membrane-covered midline defect. Omphalocele may also form a portion of a more complex defect that may remain undiagnosed without th

Limb-body wall complex (LBWC) is a rare, sporadic, congenital defect defined as a combination of at least two of three characteristics: 1. limb defects, 2. anterior body wall defects, and 3. exencephaly or encephalocoele with/without facial clefts. Three pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed: early amnion rupture, vascular disruption and embryonic dysgenesis. In this study we carried out the pathological evaluation of four fetuses with LBWC and their placentas. None of the cases had craniofacial defects. Three fetuses showed an abdominal wall defect with eventration of abdominal organs, clo

Pregnant hamsters were exposed to acetonitrile by inhalation, ingestion, or ip injection during the early primitive streak stage of embryogenesis. Inhalation of 1,800 or 3,800 ppm acetonitrile for 60 min failed to induce malformations in the near-term offspring whereas inhalation of 5,000 or 8,000 ppm acetonitrile was associated with production of severe axial skeletal (dysraphic) disorders. One fetus afflicted with extrathoracic ectopia cordis was recovered from a dam exposed to 8,000 ppm acetonitrile. An oral or ip dose of 100-400 mg/kg acetonitrile in hamsters of equivalent gestational age

Goltz-Gorlin syndrome is a highly variable disorder affecting many body parts of meso-ectodermal origin. Mutations in X-linked PORCN have been identified in almost all patients with a classical Goltz-Gorlin phenotype. The pentalogy of Cantrell is an infrequently described congenital disorder characterized by the combination of five anomalies: a midline supra-umbilical abdominal wall defect; absent or cleft lower part of the sternum; deficiency of the diaphragmatic pericardium; deficiency of the anterior diaphragm; and congenital heart anomalies. Etiology and pathogenesis are unknown. We report

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of congenital cardiac defects is 8 per 1000 neonates, and it's different if high or low risk populations are studied. The fetal ultrasonographic increase prenatal detection but varies from 7 to 90%.
OBJECTIVES: To know the prevalence of fetal cardiopathy and detection in high risk pregnancies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A observational study was made in pregnancies women with 16 old week of gestation.
RESULTS: We received a total of 3500 high-risk pregnancies and were detected 112 cases with fetal cardiopathy (3.2%). The 30% of them had a risk factor of cardiopathy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate fetal outcome in fetuses with a nuchal translucency thickness of 3 mm or more, with emphasis on those with a normal karyotype. Between 1991 and 1994, a total of 104 pregnancies with suspected ultrasound abnormalities were referred to our prenatal unit for a fetal anomaly scan before 16 weeks of gestation. Of these 104 pregnancies, 54 were referred because of a nuchal translucency thickness of 3 mm or more. Data on these 54 pregnancies will be presented. Karyotyping was performed in all cases. An abnormal karyotype was found in 26/54 (48 per cent) pregnanci

The common cardiac malformations are prevalent throughout the world, in countries of high technology and among the primitive races. These same malformations were described 200 years ago, ectopia cordis 5,000 years ago. Their recent increase is directly related to the advent of cardiac treatment. Most cardiac malformations known to man occur in the dog. The prevalence rate of these malformations is the same in the dog and in man (5-8/1,000). Several of the malformations are heritable in specific breeds of dogs, one in rabbits, another in rats. These malformations occur in various animals that c
