After 10 years certifying medical specialists Conacem is committed to evaluate the process focusing, among other aspects, on critical issues of postgraduate training programs. In this prospect, it has been important to look at the fact that there are several non university programs with a variety of contents, institutional sponsorship, curricula and faculty support. This constitutes a very inhomogenous source of knowledge and skills, even though many arise in the same area of academic influence of the most traditional Medical Schools. Available data disclose 316 specialty programs, alluded by

BACKGROUND: Health metrics in the United States (US) have lagged behind other high-income countries in recent decades, and show persistent gaps between socio-demographic groups. Top 20% income earners and college graduates have also increasingly diverged from the reminder of the population in various dimensions over the past few decades. This study described population patterns in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) by income and education over a twenty-year period.
METHODS: This analysis used nationally representative data from 10 cycles (1999-2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires that training programs comprehensively evaluate residents in the six core Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education competencies. One of the ways we do this in our residency is by administering a nine-station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at the end of each year, which evaluates tasks such as history taking, focused physical examination, communication, professionalism, procedural skills, management, prescription writing, and understanding systems-based practice. We have classified our OSCE stations

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the level and types of training Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited programs use for female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) fellows' education on lower urinary tract injuries (LUTIs).
METHODS: Two surveys were developed to assess the need for LUTI curriculum from both program director (PD) and fellow vantages through a multistage process, including review by knowledgeable colleagues, cognitive interviews, and pilot testing. BACKGROUND: Postsecondary education can provide opportunities for students from traditionally hidden populations like those who have experienced foster care or homelessness. To assist these students, campus support programs (CSPs) provide a wide range of services and activities.
OBJECTIVE: Evidence of the impact of CSPs is limited, and little is known about how students who were involved in CSPs fare at or after graduation. This study seeks to address these gaps in knowledge. Methods: This mixed-methods study surveyed 56 young people involved in a CSP for college students who have experienced

Distance education is becoming ever more important in providing continuing post basic, and especially postgraduate, education to practising professional persons, including nurses. As more and more institutions in the Republic of South Africa offer distance education courses to nurses, it is essential to take note of the positive and negative experiences of successful graduates of these programmes, in order to enhance the learning opportunities, and the success rate of nurses pursuing such distance education courses. A brief historical overview is provided about the University of South Africa (

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare a problem that many people have managed behind the scenes for years: how to balance work and family caregiving responsibilities. For physicians, many of whom were already experiencing burnout prior to the pandemic, the extra burden of COVID-19-related work stress combined with fewer options for childcare and other support has made coping all but untenable. In early 2022, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) promulgated new paid family and medical leave policy for residents and fellows. This editorial considers the importance of th

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the impact of higher education on graduates' perceived employability of young people through dimensions such as study programs in higher education (SPH), collaboration between the universities and businesses (CUB), teaching quality (TQ), flexibility of academic programs (FAP), and higher education infrastructure and resources (HEIR) by identifying factors that influence the interplay between the higher education provision and the demands of the labor market. In addition, differences in employability depending on the ownership of the higher education instit

INTRODUCTION: The Australian Government continues to provide sustained investment in rural medical education. Despite this investment, rural and remote populations continue to experience health inequities, including persistent workforce shortages and limited access to health services. In response, Griffith University, in partnership with Rural Medical Education Australia, established the Longlook Rural Medical Program in 2010. Longlook is delivered through a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship model and is designed as a socially accountable rural training program. This study examined academic pe

In his Commentary in this issue, Dr. Freeman asks whether it is time to rethink postgraduate training requirements for licensure. The majority of U.S. states require a minimum of one year of postgraduate residency training to qualify for a medical license. The original rationale for requiring just a single year of training dates back over half a century to the era of a general practitioner completing medical school followed by a rotating internship prior to heading out into independent general practice. Today, however, the requirement for a single year of training for licensure is in direct co

1. Board Certification System of Psychiatry There was a heated debate about "Postgraduate Psychiatric Education and Board Certification of Psychiatry" in the annual meeting for the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology held in Nagasaki in 1968 and in Kanazawa in 1969. The oppositions of young psychiatrists were as follows; 1) Issues of low cost of medical expense as government politics, social protect politics from psychiatric patients, and improper management of patients in mental hospitals should be dealt before making Board Certification System of Psychiatry. 2) Management of the Soc

A PhD starts with a passion in a subject area, which may occur through reading literature, or professional or personal experience. This journey is one that is taken over years, with multiple steps to support the person to grow and develop their own knowledge within research. The intention for any PhD is to produce original research. This should add to the existing evidence base through the production of a thesis, and subsequent article publications. The experience can be beneficial and rewarding but needs planning to ensure there are supportive strategies, funding, time, resources, and motivat

INTRODUCTION: Doctors' shortage has remained a concern worldwide. The developed countries started aids to recruit international medical graduates (IMG) to cope with the defects that the health care system suffers from; however, this solution may not work in developing countries that have a limited resource and poor budget to spend on the health care system. This study aims to present an alternative way to approach the physicians' shortage by accelerating undergraduate medical education and reform some post-graduate courses in order to cope with this problem.

In this study, we hypothesized that higher level of education might be associated with reduced racial disparities in renal transplantation outcomes. We used data from the United States Renal Data System (September 1, 1990-September 1, 2007) (n=79,223) and analyzed two outcomes, graft loss and recipient mortality, using Cox models. Compared with whites, African Americans had increased risk of graft failure (HR, 1.48; p<0.001) and recipient mortality (HR, 1.06; p=0.004). Compared with recipients who graduated from college, all other education groups had inferior graft survival. Specifically, com

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted surgical education, yet its impact on plastic surgery training remains incompletely understood. This study evaluates national trends in plastic surgery case volumes for residents graduating before, during, and after the academic year (AY) associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education case logs of all graduating residents in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited plastic surgery residency programs in the Unit

INTRODUCTION: Performance and selection rate of non-newly graduated physicians in a medical residency admission test as an indicator for the need of continuing education.
METHODS: A database comprising 153 654 physicians who took a residency admission test in the period 2014-2018 was analysed. Performance and selection rates were assessed in relation to year of graduation and performance in medical school.
RESULTS: The whole sample scored at a mean of 62.3 (SD ±8.9; range 1.11-91.11). Examinees who took the test in their year of graduation performed better (66.10) than those who took the tes
