Redesigning and teaching veterinary microbiology laboratory exercises with combined on-site and online participation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has forced universities to find new ways to conduct learning and teaching, as traditional face-to-face teaching has been prevented or restricted to an absolute minimum in many instances. Therefore, we redesigned and taught second-year veterinary student microbiology laboratory exercises (labs) with a hybrid learning approach. For this, a novel 'remote partner' model was implemented in which students present on-site in the laboratory worked synchronously pairwise with their remote partner present online. A student feedback survey revealed that in

Predicting medical student performance from attributes at entry: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were two-fold. Firstly, we aimed to model 'typologies' of student examination performance by grouping students into like categories based on measures of prior academic achievement (particularly in the science subjects) and interview rating at time of entry to a medical degree course, and outcome measures of subsequent performance across the course. Secondly, we aimed to illustrate and evidence the utility of the latent class analysis (LCA) clustering technique to provide meaningful information on the effectiveness of a student selection process with res

Academic standards, credit transfers and associated issues.

Various policies govern the way academic standards are managed and maintained. This includes organisational and program accreditation. Who decides what makes a program acceptable from a discipline and educational perspective? Should IMIA be developing accreditation guidelines for external program accreditation? Also the extent to which individual students are able to gain recognition for study undertaken elsewhere and thus reduce the length of the degree program undertaken varies by higher education provider. For example CQU provides credits based on study undertaken at the same level and wher

Enhancing higher-order thinking in a pharmacy physiology course through game-based, collaborative instructional workshop.

Active learning strategies are increasingly recognized for their role in improving long-term retention and higher-order thinking in health professions education. In this study, we evaluated the impact of replacing a traditional labeling lab with a team-based, game-oriented instructional workshop (IW) session on student learning in a first-year pharmacy physiology course, specifically focused on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The intervention was grounded in three core physiological concepts: structure-function relationships, cell-cell communication, and interdependence. The 2-h IW session

An approach to determining, delivering, and assessing essential course content in a medical human anatomy course.

Learning objectives typically indicate subject matter judged to be important or that represents essential material to be learned during a course. We report here on our efforts to identify essential course content and determine our effectiveness teaching and assessing this content in our preclinical human anatomy course. Using a consensus driven approach, we identified anatomical structures, relationships, and functional concepts judged to represent essential material in our unit on the thorax that students were expected to be familiar with. We then determined performance on specific examinatio

AI-Mediated Assessment of Continuing Medical Education: The Case-based Learning Intelligence Credit System (CLICS) Framework.

Continuing medical education (CME) and continuing professional development (CPD) systems have traditionally relied on time-based credit allocation, using participation duration as a proxy for professional learning. Although administratively simple and scalable, this model does not reliably demonstrate whether physicians have engaged in meaningful learning, improved clinical reasoning, or critically appraised evidence. The emergence of generative AI creates an opportunity to rethink how physician learning is documented, assessed, and credited. This viewpoint proposes the Case-based Learning Int

Incorporation of podcast as an adjunctive study material for national board examination: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, higher education embraced alternative content delivery to provide academic instruction to accommodate for the pandemic. Although this adaptation of content delivery was temporary for some, the uses of YouTube videos, Podcast, and distance learning have been an increasingly desired format for students. The transition of the traditionally two-part National Board Dental Examination into a one-part, integrating biomedical, behavioral, and clinical sciences initiated in 2018 started with limited study resources. This study hypothesized that podcast would be a useful format for

The effect of curricular reform on gross anatomy laboratory examination performance: An institutional analysis.

Many medical schools have undergone curricular reform recently. With these reforms, time spent teaching anatomy has been reduced, and there has been a general shift to a pass/fail grading system. At Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), a new curriculum was implemented in fall 2016. The year-long human gross anatomy course taught in 2015 was condensed into an integrated, semester-long course starting in 2016. Additionally, the grading scale shifted to pass/fail. This study examined first-year medical student performance on anatomy practical laboratory examinations-specifically, among l

Comparison of Veterinary Student Understanding of Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunts When Given a Pre-Lecture Activity of a Text-Only Narrative versus an Interactive Electronic Book.

Complex vascular anomalies are often difficult concepts for veterinary medical students to comprehend, as knowledge of normal anatomy, visualization of the abnormal anatomy, and understanding of the physiologic implications of that abnormality are all required to appreciate the clinical impacts of the anomaly. Access to interactive 3D models of both the normal and abnormal vasculatures may improve student comprehension. In this study, third-year veterinary medical students in a core small animal digestive diseases course completed a pre-lecture assignment consisting of a text-only narrative (n

Is the Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) the Metric Needed to Assist with Postgraduate Admissions? Two Viewpoints: Viewpoint 1: The ADAT Provides a Viable Solution to Help Postgraduate Programs Differentiate Applicants and Viewpoint 2: The ADAT Has Questionable Utility and Value for Postgraduate Admissions.

In 2012, when the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) was changed from a numerical scoring system to pass/fail, advanced dental education programs lost a metric widely used for differentiating applicants to those programs. The American Dental Association (ADA) has developed the Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) to address this issue. Implementation of the ADAT began in 2016 with a pilot program, which has not yet been widely accepted in the overall admissions process. This Point/Counterpoint explores the benefits and challenges of using the ADAT for postgraduate admissions. Viewpoint
