Integrating bioterrorism education into nursing school curricula.

Due to the events of September 11, 2001 and the bioterrorism-related anthrax episodes, the United States has escalated efforts to better prepare the nation for terrorist attacks. Early recognition and management of a biological attack are largely dependent on the clinical expertise of frontline health care personnel. Nurses are recognized as an integral part of this team. Schools of nursing should integrate bioterrorism education into their curricula to address this growing frontier of health care management. This article outlines the necessary components of bioterrorism education for nurses,

[Application of health education during the progress towards malaria elimination in China: a review].

Elimination of malaria is one of important global public health targets. Malaria was once highly prevalent in China; however, China was certified malaria-free by WHO in 2021 following decades of integrated control efforts. As an effective intervention, health education plays a critical role during the progress towards elimination of malaria in China, which remarkably increases the public awareness and action capability of malaria prevention and control knowledge. In addition, health education is of great significance to reduce the risk of re-establishment of imported malaria following disease

Probable post-traumatic stress disorder and harmful alcohol use among male members of the British Police Forces and the British Armed Forces: a comparative study.

Background: British Armed Forces' and Police Forces' personnel are trained to operate in potentially traumatic conditions. Consequently, they may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is often comorbid with harmful alcohol use. Objective: We aimed to assess the proportions, and associations, of probable PTSD and harmful alcohol use among a covariate-balanced sample of male military personnel and police employees. Methods: Proportions of probable PTSD, harmful alcohol use, and daily binge drinking, were explored using data from the police Airwave Health Monitoring Study (2007-

A Stepping Stone Toward Necessary Change: How the New USMLE Step 1 Scoring System Could Affect the Residency Application Process.

Score reporting for the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 will change from a 3-digit number to pass/fail as soon as January 1, 2022. The shift is meant to prevent residency program directors from using Step 1 scores to select applicants for interviews, a purpose for which the exam was not designed. Using Step 1 scores in this way also has put undue stress on medical students applying to residency. However, the score reporting change represents only one stepping stone toward an improved transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education. To enable a more reliable and h

Varying conceptions of competence: an analysis of how health sciences educators define competence.

CONTEXT: Current debate in medical education focuses on the nature of 'competency-based medical education' (CBME) and whether or not it should be adopted. Many medical schools claim to run 'competency-based' curricula, but the structure of their programmes can differ radically. A review of the existing CBME literature reveals that little attention has been paid to defining the concept of competence. A straightforward examination of what is meant by the term 'competence' is noticeably missing from the literature, despite its impact on medical training. OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to illustrate

A process for developing community consensus regarding the diagnosis and management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

There remain large discrepancies between pediatricians' practice patterns and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for the assessment and treatment of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Several studies raise additional concerns about access to ADHD treatment for girls, blacks, and poorer individuals. Barriers may occur at multiple levels, including identification and referral by school personnel, parents' help-seeking behavior, diagnosis by the medical provider, treatment decisions, and acceptance of treatment. Such findings confirm the importance of

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome: psychological impact on health personnel.

Eight nurses and four physicians involved in the care of an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient and a matched, non-AIDS patient responded to three self-report measures that assessed the psychological distress associated with working with each patient. While working with the AIDS patient the physicians and nurses experienced increased anxiety, greater interference in nonwork activities, more frequent negative ruminations, and more negative perceptions regarding the AIDS patient's behavior than they did with the non-AIDS patient. Because of the fears and concerns engendered in med

Military Combat Eye Protection uptake of UK service personnel on Operation TORAL in Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION: Military Combat Eye Protection (CEP) is a form of personal protective equipment designed to protect the eyes and surrounding structures. A review of 67 586 US and UK personnel wounded during Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrated that eye injuries were present in 8% of survivors or those who died of wounds. CEP was first introduced to UK military personnel in Iraq during 2006 and has been shown to reduce both the incidence and severity of eye injury, with the current CEP issued as part of the VIRTUS body armour and load carriage system. METHOD: To assess user perception and experienc

Nutritional assessment and lifestyle counseling for pregnant women in primary health care units in Mexico: implementation evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Maternal malnutrition, expressed as both undernutrition and excessive gestational weight gain, remains a major public health challenge in Mexico. Primary health care units are the main platform for the provision of evidence-based nutritional interventions, including nutritional status assessment and counseling on healthy eating and physical activity. However, there is limited knowledge about their systematic implementation in routine prenatal care. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of these interventions in primary health care units in Morelos, Mexico, focusing on key

[Current situation and challenges in patient transport and physical burden during emergency medical services activities].

OBJECTIVES: Most emergency incidents in Japan occur in residential settings, requiring emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to work in confined indoor spaces. Many EMS personnel report physical strain on the lower back in transporting patients using devices that require lifting, such as tarpaulin stretchers. However, the specific transport methods chosen by EMS personnel and physical burden associated with each method remain unclear. "No Lift" practices, which avoid manual lifting and reduce lumbar strain in healthcare and welfare fields and in Australia, have attracted attention. Some J

Analysis of nosocomial acquired Clostridium difficile infection in an Italian research and teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile (Cd) infection is a nosocomial plague which is correlated with several clinical and medical factors such as antibiotics intake. It is known that prevention is possible through infection control measures both clinical and epidemiological. METHODS: We examined the data from a study about Cd infection in four internal medicine wards in a teaching and research hospital in the north part of Italy in a two years period. The wards are only slightly different in size, plan, structures, nursing staff and patient's characteristics but have a different room' organizatio

Principles of organization of an obstetrical unit from scratch.

The previous discussion has attempted to outline some basic principles in developing a high-risk obstetrical unit from scratch. Needless to say, emphasis in specific areas will be dictated by community needs, financial resources, numbers and training of personnel, and space limitations. The basic functions of patient care, education, and self-evaluation can be accomplished in any high-risk obstetrical unit.

Global disparities in arrhythmia care: Mind the gap.

Delivery of comprehensive arrhythmia care requires the simultaneous presence of many resources. These include complex hospital infrastructure, expensive implantable equipment, and expert personnel. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), at least 1 of these components is often missing, resulting in a gap between the demand for arrhythmia care and the capacity to supply care. In addition to this treatment gap, there exists a training gap, as many clinicians in LMICs have limited access to formal training in cardiac electrophysiology. Given the progressive increase in the burden of car

[The mindset of anesthesiologists while performing surgical airway management].

BACKGROUND: The surgical establishment of a secure airway in a cannot intubate-cannot oxygenate situation represents a feared and multidimensionally challenging situation in anesthesiology and emergency medicine teams. Numerous factors can influence the performance of a cricothyroidotomy. In addition to experience, knowledge and practical skills, the materials used and the mindset of the personnel also appear to play a significant role. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of experiences, attitudes and knowledge on surgical airway management of medical personn

Predictors of psychiatric hospitalization in the Navy.

Mental disorders represent an important source of morbidity among U.S. military personnel and are a common reason for early separation from the military. The objective of this study was to identify factors predictive of hospitalization for mental health disorders in a large sample of enlisted Navy personnel. Demographic variables and a variety of psychosocial variables assessed on the Sailors' Health Inventory Program questionnaire were studied as predictors of psychiatric hospitalization. Three psychiatric categories were examined: adjustment reaction, personality disorder, and all other ment

Intrauterine contraceptive device training and outcomes for healthcare providers in developed countries: A systematic review.

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) are a safe and cost-effective contraceptive method for medically eligible women. Despite this, the utilisation rate for IUCDs is relatively low in many high-income countries, including Australia. Provision of education and training regarding IUCDs to healthcare providers, including nurses and midwives, is one approach to overcome some of the barriers that may prevent wider uptake of IUCDs. This study aims to explore the types and impact of IUCD insertion training for healthcare providers. A systematic review was undertaken in January 2017 to determine

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Syphilis Infections Among Military Personnel in Sierra Leone.

CONTEXT: HIV and syphilis infections are common in military personnel in sub-Saharan Africa, which impact combat preparedness and increase demands on the military health care system. The prevalence of HIV is estimated at 1.5% among the general population (15-49 years of age) of Sierra Leone, and the estimated syphilis prevalence ranged from 1.5% to 5.2% based on regional studies. We examined the prevalence and risk factors for these two common sexually transmitted infections in the Sierra Leone military personnel. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 1157 randomly selected soldiers fr
