Effects of the invasive swim bladder parasite Anguillicola crassus on health and condition indicators in the European eel.

Parasites negatively affect biological processes within their hosts, which may alter for example health, growth, and reproductive ability. Non-native invasive parasites, in particular, may have large effects on the endemic hosts, given that the hosts lack evolved specific defences against such parasites. The swim bladder nematode Anguillicola crassus, an invasive parasite originating from Asia, is found in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla, L. 1758), since the 1980s. We investigated whether A. crassus affected several indicators related to health of the European eel (spleen- and liver size,

Swamp eel aldehyde reductase is involved in response to nitrosative stress via regulating NO/GSH levels.

Aldehyde reductase (ALR) plays key roles in the detoxification of toxic aldehyde. In this study, the authors cloned the swamp eel ALR gene using rapid amplification of cDNA ends-PCR (RACE-PCR). The recombinant protein (rALR) was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using a Ni2+ -NTA chelating column. The rALR protein exhibited efficient reductive activity towards several aldehydes, ketones and S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). A spot assay suggested that the recombinant E. coli strain expressing rALR showed better resistance to formaldehyde, sodium nitrite and GSNO stress, suggesting that swa

Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma: Slippery like an eel to diagnose on cytology-case series of 3 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma is an extremely rare tumor and is a difficult diagnosis to be made on cytology alone. We report 3 cases where the cytologic features were misdiagnosed as carcinoma/lymphoma but histopathology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) established the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. CLINICAL DETAILS: Case 1 was a 60-year-old man with multiloculated ascites and omental caking. Peritoneal fluid was reported as malignant on cytology but was misclassified as adenocarcinoma. Case 2, a 45-year-old man with ascites and peritoneal nodularity, radiologically mim

The lateral line system and its innervation in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica (Teleostei: Elopomorpha: Anguillidae).

The lateral line system and its innervation were examined in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. Although the species has seven lateral line canals and 13 superficial neuromast groups, the components are generally similar to those in many other teleosts. The lateral line system of A. japonica is distinctive in having a rostral commissure connecting the left and right supraorbital canals, pouches in the cephalic lateral line canals and superficial neuromasts along the lower lip, and lacking a postotic canal. Four tube-like elements, two along the supratemporal canal and the other two along the

Cold seawater induces early sexual developmental stages in the BPG axis of European eel males.

BACKGROUND: The impossibility of closing the life cycle of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in captivity troubles the future of this critically endangered species. In addition, the European eel is a highly valued and demanded resource, thus the successful closing of its life cycle would have a substantial economic and ecological impact. With the aim of obtaining the highest gamete quality, the study of the effects of environmental factors, such as temperature, on reproductive performance may prove valuable. This is especially true for the exposure to cold water, which has been reported to

Effects of chronic exposure to lead, copper, zinc, and cadmium on biomarkers of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla.

Exposure to specific metallic compounds can cause severe deleterious modifications in organisms. Fishes are particularly prone to toxic effects from exposure to metallic compounds via their environment. Species that inhabit estuaries or freshwater environments can be chronically affected by persistent exposure to a large number of metallic compounds, particularly those released by industrial activities. In this study, we exposed yellow eels (European eel, Anguilla anguilla) for 28 days to environmentally relevant concentrations of four specific metals; lead (300, 600, and 1,200 μg/l), copper (

Anguillicola papernai (Nematoda: Anguillicolidae) and other helminths parasitizing the African longfin eel Anguilla mossambica.

The swim bladder nematode Anguillicola papernai Moravec & Taraschewski, 1988 has been investigated as regards its occurrence in longfin eels Anguilla mossambica (Peters) in rivers in South Africa. A. papernai revealed a prevalence of around 50% and a mean intensity of about 6 adult worms at 1 sampling site but were less abundant in 3 others. Field observations suggest a more narrow habitat preference than that of Anguillicola crassus and a seasonal pattern of abundance. African longfin eels harboured a poor helminth community. In addition to A. papernai, 2 gastro-intestinal nematodes occurred,

Anatomy and histology of the brain and sense organs of the Antarctic eel cod Muraenolepis microps (Gadiformes; Muraenolepididae).

Brain regions, cranial nerves, and sense organs in Muraenolepis microps, an Antarctic gadiform fish, were examined to determine which features could be attributed to a gadiform ancestry and which to habitation of Antarctic waters. We found that the central nervous system and sense organs are well developed, showing neither substantial regression nor hypertrophy. A detailed drawing of the brain and cranial nerves is provided. The rostral position of the olfactory bulbs and telencephalic size and lobation are common for the order. The optic tectum and corpus cerebelli are smaller than in most ot

Mediation of serotonin-induced hyperventilation via 5-HT3-receptor in European eel Anguilla anguilla.

The effects of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) on ventilation were investigated by continuous measurements of intrabuccal pressure in unrestrained eel. Intravenous administration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (30 micrograms.kg-1) caused a large increase in ventilatory frequency (+ 100%) and amplitude (+ 140%). The 5-hydroxytryptamine-induced hyperventilation was blocked by the 5-HT3-receptor antagonists metoclopramide (1.0 mg.kg-1) or MDL72222 (1.0 mg.kg-1), and was insensitive to the 5-HT1/2-receptor antagonist methysergide (3.0 mg.kg-1) and to the 5-HT4-receptor antagonist DAU 6285 CL (3.0 mg.kg-1)

Cholinergic control of stanniocalcin release in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and the American eel, Anguilla rostrata.

An in vivo whole animal 45Ca influx bioassay was used to study the cholinergic control of the release of stanniocalcin (STC) in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the American eel (Anguilla rostrata). In both species calcium influx (JinCa2+) was lowered in response to hypercalcemia induced by intravascular (trout) or intraperitoneal (eel) injections of CaCl2. In trout, this response was blocked by the cholinergic antagonist atropine (0.25 mumol kg-1) and mimicked by the cholinoceptor agonist carbachol (0.25 mumol kg-1). These observations are consistent with a cholinergic stimulation

Ventilatory and circulatory adjustments in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) exposed to short term hypoxia.

Respiratory and circulatory (measured and calculated) variables were obtained at the same time in resting eels, during normoxia and after 1 h exposure to environmental hypoxia (water PO2 of 40 torr). In normoxia, values of respiratory and circulatory variables appeared less than those reported for most other fish. These differences could be partly explained by a lower level of standard metabolism and a greater uptake of O2 through the skin. Hypoxia caused a marked decrease in heart rate (40%), cardiac output (37%), ventral and dorsal arterial blood pressures (22% and 32%), associated with a co

Effects of steroid hormones on pituitary immunoreactive gonadotropin in European freshwater eel, Anguilla anguilla L.

The low pituitary immunoreactive gonadotropin (IR GTH) contents of immature female or male freshwater eels were strongly increased after intraperitoneal injections of estradiol. Using female eels, the effect was shown to be dose dependent. In neither sex was modification of pituitary IR GTH observed after progesterone treatment; a very small increase (significant in females but not in males) was produced by cortisol. An important sexual difference occurred with testosterone, which strongly stimulated pituitary IR GTH level in male but not in female eels. The possibility of a low central aromat

The effects of acetylcholine, biogenic amines and other vasoactive agents on the cardiovascular functions of the Eel, Anguilla japonica.

The blood pressure in the cardinal vein, cardiac chambers and ventral and dorsal aortae have been recorded from conscious eels in water. At low doses, acetylcholine reduced the heart rate but increased the transbranchial differential blood pressure. The effects were abolished by atropine but not by tubocurarine. At doses in excess of 0.1 mug/kg, a secondary rise in arterial blood pressure was observed which could be abolished by bretylium, phentolamine or phenoxybenzamine. Catecholamines did not affect the heart rate although a transient bradycardia due to reflex inhibition could be observed w

The dual carbonyl reductase activities of 17β-HSD12a during ovarian development in Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica).

17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase subtype 12 (17β-HSD12) is responsible for the reactions between carbonyl and hydroxyl groups at the C17 position of sex steroids. Our previous research revealed that hsd17b12a was expressed at a high level during follicular maturation in Anguilla japonica, peaking at the migrating nucleus stage. This indicated the potential of 17β-HSD12 may convert 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) into 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP), a maturation-inducing steroid. To elucidate the functions of hsd17b12a in A. japonica, the spatiotemporal expression patterns of hsd17b12a

Isolation and identification of probiotic Bacillus subtilis AJQ03 from the intestinal tract of Anguilla japonica (Japanese eel).

In recent years, the use of fish-derived probiotics in aquaculture has become more widespread. However, research on Anguilla japonica-derived probiotics is still limited. To evaluate the potential of probiotics for disease control in eel aquaculture, isolates were obtained from the intestinal tract of healthy Anguilla japonica. These isolates were assessed for their adhesion properties, inhibition of pathogen adhesion, and hydrolytic enzyme production. Morphological characteristics and 16S rRNA sequence analysis were used for identification. Results showed that the AJQ03 strain adhered to the

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of thyroid hormone receptors in protogynous rice field eel, Monopterus albus.

Thyroid hormones (THs) play important roles in growth, development, morphogenesis, reproduction, and so on. They are mainly meditated by binding to thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) in vertebrates. As important members of the nuclear receptor superfamily, TRs and their ligands are involved in many biological processes. To investigate the potential roles of TRs in the gonadal differentiation and sex change, we cloned and characterized the TRs genes in protogynous rice field eel (Monopterus albus). In this study, three types of TRs were obtained, which were TRαA, TRαB and TRβ, encoding preproprote

Polystyrene nanospheres-induced hepatotoxicity in swamp eel (Monopterus albus): From biochemical, pathological and transcriptomic perspectives.

As ubiquitous emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments have aroused critical global concerns. Despite the occurrence and characteristics of MPs in freshwater agroecosystems well-described by our previous study, their ecotoxicological implications in Monopterus albus remains unfathomed. Herein, we dissected toxic effects and mechanisms of PS-NPs exposure against M. albus hepatic tissues at concentrations of 0.5 (L), 5 (M), 10 (H) mg/L for 28 days using physiochemical measurements, histopathological analysis and transcriptomic sequencing. The European and Japanese eel NaCl cotransporters β exhibit chloride currents and are resistant to thiazide type diuretics.

The thiazide-sensitive Na+-Cl- cotransporter (NCC) is the major pathway for salt reabsorption in the mammalian distal convoluted tubule, and the inhibition of its function with thiazides is widely used for the treatment of arterial hypertension. In mammals and teleosts, NCC is present as one ortholog that is mainly expressed in the kidney. One exception, however, is the eel, which has two genes encoding NCC. The eNCCα is located in the kidney and eNCCβ, which is present in the apical membrane of the rectum. Interestingly, the European eNCCβ functions as a Na+-Cl- cotransporter that is neverthe
