[Tonic afferent and efferent activities of the mesenteric nerves and their dependence on the motility of the small intestine].

Acute experiments in cats have revealed that every successive contraction of the jejunum or ileum increases spontaneous afferent and sympathetic efferent discharges in small branches of mesenteric nerves. The increased sympathetic efferent activity either limits or suppresses the contraction of the intestine portion. The above interrelationships among neural links of the regulation is also maintained by the closing of peripheral reflexes in the splanchnic plexus' nodes. These and other relevant data suggested a mechanism of the self-regulation of the intestine motility.

Afferent and efferent innervation of the rat esophagus. A tracing study with horseradish peroxidase and nuclear yellow.

The technique of retrograde labeling of nerve cells with HRP and nuclear yellow as well as transganglionic anterograde HRP-tracing of sensory projections into the CNS were used to establish the motor and sensory innervation pattern of two parts of the rat esophagus: the cervical and the abdominal segment. For comparison, also the innervation of the anterior wall of the stomach was studied. Application of HRP to the cervical part of the esophagus resulted in bilateral labeling of neurons in the nucleus ambiguus exclusively, while application of the tracer to the abdominal part was followed by l

Nigrothalamic projections in the monkey demonstrated by autoradiographic technics.

In spite of repeated demonstrations by degeneration technics, nigrothalamic fibers have been regarded with some skepticism. Attempts were made to trace nigral efferent projections in the monkey by autoradiographic technics. Tritiated amino acids (L-leucine, L-lysine and L-proline), injected into portions of the substantia nigra (SN), labeled cells in four regions, designated as, (1) rostrolateral, (2) caudolateral, (3) rostromedial and (4) central. Rostrolateral nigral neurons transported radioactive label preferentially and abundantly to thalamic nuclei; localized isotope was found in parts o

[Dacryocystorhinostomy with temporary intubation using a Hatt set].

During the period between June 1987 and March 1988 the authors performed 10 dacryocystorhinostomies with temporary intubation of the new efferent pathways, using a Hatt set. Three patients removed the set themselves during the early postoperative period. The authors evaluate thus seven successful intubations lasting two months. The observation period is six to eighteen months. In six patients the new efferent pathways are patent without signs of epiphora not even when lacrimation is irritated. One patient developed during the postoperative period torpid rhinitis persisting for two months and a

Distinct Roles of Cerebellar Afferent and Efferent Fiber Tracts in Craniocervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum has been widely implicated in the pathogenesis of craniocervical dystonia (CCD). Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) has emerged as an effective therapy for CCD. However, the roles of cerebellar afferent and efferent pathways in CCD pathogenesis and STN-DBS treatment remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To identify microstructural and connectivity alterations in the cerebellar afferent/efferent pathways in CCD, and to investigate their associations with clinical characteristics. METHODS: We enrolled 31 CCD patients undergoing STN-DBS and 33 age- a

A DiI-tracing study of the neural connections of the pineal organ in two elasmobranchs (Scyliorhinus canicula and Raja montagui) suggests a pineal projection to the midbrain GnRH-immunoreactive nucleus.

The pineal organ of elasmobranchs is an elongated photoreceptive organ. In order to investigate the afferent and efferent connections of the pineal organ of two elasmobranchs, the skate (Raja montagui) and the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), a fluorescent carbocyanine (DiI) was applied to the pineal organ of paraformaldehyde-fixed brains. This application strongly labeled the pineal tract, which formed extensive bilateral projections. In both species, the pinealofugal fibers coursed to the dorsomedial thalamus, the medial pretectal area, the posterior tubercle, and the medial mesencephalic te

Connectional basis for frequency representation in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus.

To study the role of the lateral lemniscus as a link in the ascending auditory pathway, injections of neuronal tracers were placed in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) and in the inferior colliculus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus. To correlate the anatomical results with tonotopic organization, the characteristic frequency of cells at each injection site was determined electrophysiologically. Pathways from AVCN diverge to 3 major targets in the lateral lemniscus, the intermediate nucleus and 2 divisions of the ventral nucleus (VNLL). Projections from these 3 nuclei then converge at the in

Increases in gastric acidity in response to electroacupuncture stimulation of the hindlimb of anesthetized rats.

Acupuncture treatment has been used as physiotherapy to treat gastrointestinal disorders in traditional Oriental medicine. In the present study, we selected anesthetized animals as the subjects of this experiment in order to eliminate emotional factors, and investigated the responses to acupuncture stimulation at only a single point by changing animal conditions. 1) There was marked enhancement of gastric acid secretion by electroacupuncture stimulation of the hindlimb based on pH values of the perfusate. However, the enduring response after the momentary initial decrease suggested the existen

Recruitment of inhibitory neuronal pathways regulating dopaminergic activity for the control of cocaine seeking.

Drug seeking is associated with the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic (DA) activity. Previously, we have shown that brief optogenetic inhibition of VTA DA neurons with 1 s pulses delivered every 9 s attenuates cocaine seeking under extinction conditions in rats without producing overt signs of dysphoria or locomotor sedation. Whether recruitment of neuronal pathways inhibiting VTA neuronal activity would suppress drug seeking remains unknown. Here, we asked if optogenetic stimulation of the lateral habenula (LHb) efferents in the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) as well as RMTg ef

Acute effects of vagus nerve stimulation parameters on gastric motility assessed with magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an emerging bioelectronic therapy for regulating food intake and controlling gastric motility. However, the effects of different VNS parameters and polarity on postprandial gastric motility remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: In anesthetized rats (N = 3), we applied monophasic electrical stimuli to the left cervical vagus and recorded compound nerve action potential (CNAP) as a measure of nerve response. We evaluated to what extent afferent or efferent pathway could be selectively activated by monophasic VNS. In a different group of rats (N

[Angiography findings before and following transplantation of free myocutaneous flaps].

Prerequisite for successful split-skin flap transplants of myocutaneous flaps is the presence of adequate adjacent afferent and efferent vessels, thus making an arteriography of the receiving region mandatory during surgery preparation. In 20 or 29 patients in whom a split myocutaneous flap was transplanted to the lower leg, angiography revealed 22 pathological or other therapyrelevant findings. Besides the afferent vessels it is basically necessary to visualise the peripheral efferent pathways in order to prevent that vascular anastomosis to the split-skin flap obstructs the blood supply of t

Selective efferent vagal stimulation in heart failure.

Patients diagnosed with heart failure have high rates of mortality and morbidity. Based on promising preclinical studies, vagal nerve stimulation has been trialled in these patients using whole nerve electrical stimulation, but the results have been mixed. This is, at least in part, due to an inability to selectively recruit the activity of specific fibres within the vagus with whole nerve electrical stimulation, as well as not knowing which the 'therapeutic' fibres are. This symposium review focuses on a population of cardiac-projecting efferent vagal fibres with cell bodies located within th

Hereditary spastic paraplegias: membrane traffic and the motor pathway.

Voluntary movement is a fundamental way in which animals respond to, and interact with, their environment. In mammals, the main CNS pathway controlling voluntary movement is the corticospinal tract, which encompasses connections between the cerebral motor cortex and the spinal cord. Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a group of genetic disorders that lead to a length-dependent, distal axonopathy of fibres of the corticospinal tract, causing lower limb spasticity and weakness. Recent work aimed at elucidating the molecular cell biology underlying the HSPs has revealed the importance of b

Neurally augmented sexual function.

Neurally Augmented Sexual Function (NASF) is a technique utilizing epidural electrodes to restore and improve sexual function. Orgasmic dysfunction is common in adult women, affecting roughly one quarter of populations studied. Many male patients suffering from erectile dysfunction are not candidates for phosphdiesterase therapy due to concomitant nitrate therapy. Positioning the electrodes at roughly the level of the cauda equina allows for stimulation of somatic efferents and afferents as well as modifying sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Our series of women treated by NASF is descr

Preservation of segmental hindbrain organization in adult frogs.

To test for possible retention of early segmental patterning throughout development, the cranial nerve efferent nuclei in adult ranid frogs were quantitatively mapped and compared with the segmental organization of these nuclei in larvae. Cranial nerve roots IV-X were labeled in larvae with fluorescent dextran amines. Each cranial nerve efferent nucleus resided in a characteristic segmental position within the clearly visible larval hindbrain rhombomeres (r). Trochlear motoneurons were located in r0, trigeminal motoneurons in r2-r3, facial branchiomotor and vestibuloacoustic efferent neurons i

Efferent-mediated fluctuations in vestibular nerve discharge: a novel, positive-feedback mechanism of efferent control.

We compared the background discharge of vestibular nerve afferents in barbiturate-anesthetized and unanesthetized, decerebrate chinchillas. Based on their interspike-interval statistics, units were categorized as regular, intermediate, or irregular. Background discharge rates were higher in irregular units from decerebrates compared to anesthetized preparations; no such difference was observed for regular or intermediate units. Large fluctuations in discharge rate were confined to intermediate and irregular units in decerebrates, but were not seen at all in anesthetized animals. The most promi

Corollary discharge dysfunction in schizophrenia: can it explain auditory hallucinations?

Failure of corollary discharge, a mechanism for distinguishing self-generated from externally generated percepts, has been posited to underlie certain positive symptoms of schizophrenia, including auditory hallucinations. Although originally described in the visual system, corollary discharge may exist in the auditory system, whereby signals from motor speech commands prepare auditory cortex for self-generated speech. While associated with sensorimotor systems, it might also apply to inner speech or thought, regarded as our most complex motor act. In this paper, we describe the results of a se

Spinal interneurones; how can studies in animals contribute to the understanding of spinal interneuronal systems in man?

The first part of this review deals with arguments that the essential properties and organization of spinal interneuronal systems in the cat and in man are similar. The second part is concerned with the possibility that some interneuronal systems may be responsible for motor disturbances caused by spinal cord injuries and that these interneurones may be defined. This possibility is discussed with respect to the hyperexcitability of alpha-motoneurones and the exaggeration of stretch reflexes in spastic patients. To this end, what is known about cat spinal interneurones and about the neuronal ba

Cortical activation related to arm-movement combinations.

Recent studies support the long-standing hypothesis that continuous arm movements consist of overlapping, discrete submovements. However, the cortical activation associated with these submovements is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that electroencephalography (EEG) activity would more strongly correspond to the particular combinations of muscle electrical activity, the independent components (ICs) of surface electromyography (EMG), than the surface EMG from individual muscles alone. We examined data recorded from two normal subjects performing sustained submaximal contractions or continual,
