Potential role of wild forest berries as a transmission vehicle for taeniid eggs was examined using non-zoonotic Taenia laticollis eggs as a model. The berries studied were bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) (1 m2 plot, n = 10) and lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) (1 m2 plot, n = 11). Traditional jet-in-air cell sorters have been designed and optimized to isolate small particles such as mammalian lymphocytes with an average diameter of 10 μm. We discuss the practical considerations of setting up a conventional jet-in-air cell sorter, using a 200-μm nozzle, to isolate the large parasitic nematode eggs of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, with a maximum size of 60 μm. The eggs were separated based on light scattering properties, no fluorescent dye or molecule was required.

The production of small numbers of large eggs among the standard-sized eggs of Trichuris trichiura is well known. Large eggs have also been observed in Trichuris muris, but they have not been studied previously. This paper compares the characteristics of the large eggs (LEs, ≥74.5 μm long) and standard-sized eggs (SEs, <74.5 μm long) in cultures of T. muris. Our previous work showed that SEP, a novel glucan isolated from the eggs of sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus nudus, had remarkable anti-tumor activity. To elucidate the mechanism of the anti-tumor activity, the immunomodulatory activity of SEP was investigated. Evidences of a possible association between endomyocardial fibrosis and schistosomiasis have been recently investigated. We describe the finding of cardiac schistosomal granulomas in a 14 year-old-girl presenting symptoms and signals of right side endomyocardial fibrosis. Refractory ascistis and progressive atrioventricular block were observed during follow-up. Endomyocardial biopsy and post mortem specimens showed inflammatory infiltrates, schistosomal granuloma and fibrosis.

The effect of Mycoplasma gallinarum isolated from village chickens on embryonated village chicken eggs was investigated. Thirty-eight stool samples were preserved with sodium azide, 5 mg g-1 of stool. Results show that after 12 weeks, all the samples with S. mansoni eggs remained positive with good egg morphology. Egg counts show an average decrease of about 20%. Given the logistic advantages provided by using a small quantity of dry preservative this method is acceptable for mass prevalence surveys where sensitivity is not critical. The distribution of eggs in the stool was studied in 10 samples. Results showed no significant differences between centre and surface of the stools.
