Diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced CT for elbow joint disorders in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography (CT) with intravenous contrast agents can provide additional diagnostic information. To our knowledge, no previous study has evaluated the role of contrast agents in CT imaging of the canine elbow joint. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of post-contrast imaging. METHODS: A total of 326 elbow joints from 163 dogs with unilateral or bilateral lameness caused by elbow joint pathology were examined using radiography and CT, both with and without contrast agents. Diagnoses assessed from radiographs and CT scans in the bone window included primary di

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Around the Elbow Joint That Required Upper Arm Amputation.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a relatively rare benign proliferative disorder of the synovium, and it commonly occurs in the knee joint. A unique case of huge PVNS originating around the elbow joint that required upper arm amputation is reported. A 74-year-old woman had a 5-month history of right elbow pain and noticed a mass measuring 8 × 5 cm on the olecranon side. She had a past history of undergoing tumor resection and flap surgery 9 years earlier, diagnosed as a giant cell tumor involving the right elbow region. She had chronic renal failure, with a shunt on the right forearm

Aseptic Destruction of the Elbow Joint after Radial Head Replacement. Case Study.

Radial head replacement should be a routine treatment in cases of non-reconstructable radial head fractures. With the growing number of radial head arthroplasties, we are going to see more complications related to this procedure. We describe a case of aseptic destruction of the elbow joint, probably related to the release of polyethylene particles from the prosthetic head. Removal of the implant and extensive synovectomy was performed, leading to an excellent clinical outcome with reduction of pain and increase in the range of motion. The clinical improvement was not accompanied by radiographi

Elbow clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic study in patients with inflammatory joint diseases.

The main objective of this cross-sectional observational study was to investigate the relationship between clinical, ultrasonographic (US) and radiographic elbow features in patients with inflammatory joint diseases (IJD). The secondary objective was to evaluate the association between regional clinical elbow diagnoses and imaging findings. Consecutive patients with IJD attending follow-up visits were assessed for elbow pain and standardized elbow examination. Seven regional clinical diagnoses were defined. Digital elbow radiographs were read for 9 abnormalities. A standardized elbow grayscale

The management of elbow instability using an internal joint stabilizer: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical and surgical treatments such as immobilization, transarticular pinning, and hinged or nonhinged external fixation have been used to treat unstable elbows. These methods all have drawbacks. We thought that a bent Steinmann pin introduced through the axis of ulnohumeral rotation and attached to the ulna could provide an improved method of treatment and that this could result in the development of a proper internal joint fixator that may have widespread application. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Does a fully internal hinged fixator crafted intraoperatively by the surgeon from a Ste

Does cubitus varus cause morphologic and alignment changes in the elbow joint?

BACKGROUND: In cubitus varus after pediatric supracondylar fracture, late development of trochlear deformity causing additional varus angulation and joint misalignment relating to late complications of the tardy ulnar nerve palsy or posterolateral rotatory instability have been suggested. However, it is unclear whether these morphologic and alignment changes of the elbow joint occur in cubitus varus. The object of this study was to investigate morphologic changes of the bones and alignment changes of the elbow joint in longstanding cubitus varus using 3-dimensional computer bone models created

Biepicondylar fracture dislocation of the elbow joint concomitant with ulnar nerve injury.

In this article, we present a case of humeral biepicondylar fracture dislocation concomitant with ulnar nerve injury in a seventeen year-old male patient. Physical examination of our patient in the emergency room revealed a painful, edematous and deformed-looking left elbow joint. Hypoesthesia of the little finger was also diagnosed on the left hand. Radiological assessment ended up with a posterior fracture dislocation of the elbow joint accompanied by intra-articular loose bodies. Open reduction-Internal fixation of the fracture dislocation and ulnar nerve exploration were performed under ge

Acute annular ligament interposition into the radiocapitellar joint in children (nursemaid's elbow).

Acute annular ligament interposition into the radiocapitellar joint ("nursemaid's elbow") is a common injury in children younger than 5 years. The injury occurs when axial traction is applied to an extended, pronated arm. There are no abnormal radiographic findings associated with this condition. We recommend that children with a classic history and clinical presentation of an acute annular ligament interposition into the radiocapitellar joint be treated without obtaining radiographs.

Elbow joint salvage with the transverse rectus island flap: a new application.

The transverse rectus island flap has gained wide acceptance in breast reconstruction. We introduce its use in reconstruction of extensive wounds of the elbow region. Three cases are presented. Its principal advantages over other methods are size, pedicle length, reliability, acceptable donor defect, and potential prevention of elbow and shoulder stiffness. Its disadvantages are bulk, weight, and required staged procedures.

Early Joint Use Following Elbow Dislocation Limits Range-of-Motion Loss and Tissue Pathology in Posttraumatic Joint Contracture.

BACKGROUND: Simple elbow dislocation occurs at an incidence of 2.9 to 5.21 dislocations per 100,000 person-years, with as many as 62% of these patients experiencing long-term elbow joint contracture, stiffness, and/or pain. Poor outcomes and the need for secondary surgical intervention can often be prevented nonoperatively with early or immediate active mobilization and physical therapy. However, immobilization or limited mobilization may be necessary following trauma, and it is unknown how different periods of immobilization affect pathological changes in elbow joint tissue and how these chan

Total Elbow Arthroplasty as the Treatment of Choice for a Young Man with Neglected Terrible Triad of the Elbow Joint and Schizophrenia: A Case Report.

In young patients, the use of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is rarely preferred due to its high rate of mechanical failure. Poor compliance and psychological problems encountered may lead to increased difficulty in management. A 38-year-old male complained stiffness and pain on his left elbow. History of trauma was present 10 months ago, when he fell down from a tree of 6m high. Immediate closed reduction and immobilisation with backslab was performed, but he was lost to follow-up due to Schizophrenia. In physical examination, we found varus and recurvatum deformity with inability to flex the

Estimation of Maximum Shoulder and Elbow Joint Torques Based on Demographics and Anthropometrics.

Repetitive movements that involve a significant shift of the body's center of mass can lead to shoulder and elbow fatigue, which are linked to injury and musculoskeletal disorders if not addressed in time. Research has been conducted on the joint torque individuals can produce, a quantity that indicates the ability of the person to carry out such repetitive movements. Most of the studies surround gait analysis, rehabilitation, the assessment of athletic performance, and robotics. The aim of this study is to develop a model that estimates the maximum shoulder and elbow joint torque an individua

Use of an elastic transarticular external fixator construct for immobilization of the elbow joint.

Transarticular external skeletal fixation usually involves rigid bars that result in a stable but stiff joint. This study describes the technique and the outcome of an elastic transarticular external fixator (ETEF) applied to the elbow joint. Four cases of elbow luxation with collateral ligament injuries were managed with closed reduction and application of an ETEF to maintain the reduction. A triceps tendon avulsion was surgically managed before applying an ETEF. The clinical outcome was considered excellent in 2 cats, good in 2 dogs (1 elbow luxation and the avulsion of the triceps tendon),

Modular megaprosthesis reconstruction for oncological and non-oncological resection of the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of large bone defects around the elbow joint is surgically demanding due to sparse soft tissue coverage, complex biomechanics and the close proximity to neurovascular structures. Modular megaprostheses are established reconstruction tools for the elbow, but only small case series have been reported in the literature. METHODS: Thirty-six patients who underwent reconstruction of the elbow joint with a modular megaprosthesis were reviewed retrospectively. In 31 patients (86.1%), elbow replacement was performed after resection of a bone tumour, whereas five non-oncologi

Anatomical study of fibrous structures of the medial aspect of the canine elbow joint.

Forces exerted by fibrous structures on the medial aspect of the canine elbow joint have been reported to be involved in elbow pathology. The purpose of this paper is to assess the relationships of the ligamentous and muscular structures of this region of the canine elbow joint, and how they relate to the medial coronoid process. Six cadavers of adult German shepherd cross-breed dogs were used in this study to make intra-articular and vascular injections of this region. Some joints were dissected and some were frozen to saw sagittal or dorsal cryosections to assess the relationships of the myo

[Traumatic rupture of the brachial artery due to a closed elbow joint dislocation].

A rare complication of a brachial artery rupture as a result of a closed elbow dislocation is presented. If vascular damage is suspected angiography must be carried out and if signs of ischemia are present on the affected arm an immediate operational intervention with vascular reconstruction is necessary. The problems associated with this type of injury are discussed on the basis of the current literature.
