Factors influencing the sequelae of high tension electrical injuries.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a retrospective analysis of the clinical spectrum, treatment and morbidity of the patients who have suffered high tension electrical injuries with current passage through their body (59 patients). Voltage, localization and surgical treatment seem to be the main factors influencing the lesion and the morbidity. The following points were considered: (1) Is there any relation between known factors such as voltage and the localization of the points of contact with the incidence and the type of complications and sequelae? (2) Do the observations show that wo

Long thoracic nerve injury due to an electric burn.

A 19-year-old white man was burned over 7.5% of his body when he sustained an electric injury from a transformer. There was no associated fall or loss of consciousness. Debridement and grafting were required. The patient had some transient weakness of the muscles of his right arm associated with lower cervical nerve-root injury. This subsequently improved. He also was found to have paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle, with winging of the scapula due to long thoracic nerve injury. This has not improved. A surgical procedure suggested to improve function of the shoulder was rejected by the

Myoglobinuric acute renal failure following electrical injury.

Eight patients with acute renal failure (ARF) following electrical injury were studied. The mean area of cutaneous burns was 23 +/- 16% (range 6-60%) and extensive tissue necrosis with gangrene was uniformly present. Oliguria developed 9.3 +/- 7 h (range 3-24 h) after the injury in 7 patients (88%). Urinalysis revealed presence of myoglobin in 75% of the patients. The mean duration of oliguria among those who recovered was 16 +/- 6 days (range 11-23 days) and the mean interval between the onset of oliguria and recovery of renal function was 25 +/- 6 days (range 21-34 days). Four patients died.

Treatment of soft-tissue injuries by pulsed electrical energy.

Twenty pairs of patients matched for sex, age, weight, and degree of trauma were treated either with an active Diapulse machine emitting pulsed, high-frequency electrical energy or with a non-active placebo machine. They were examined for swelling, pain, and disability before treatment and after three days under double-blind conditions. The results show that the pulsed, high-frequency electrical treatment has a definite biological effect on recently injured soft tissues, especially in the reduction of pain and disability.

Orbital and Ophthalmologic Injuries Associated With Standing Electric Scooter Accidents: A Narrative Synthesis of Clinical Outcomes and Injury Patterns.

Standing electric scooters (e-scooters) have introduced a distinct pattern of facial trauma to emergency departments worldwide. Their unique biomechanics, with riders standing upright on a narrow platform, creates a characteristic forward pitching mechanism during sudden stops that directs high-energy impacts to the anterior midface and orbital region. This differs fundamentally from bicycle accidents, where lateral falls and arm bracing are typical. This review synthesises available clinical evidence on orbital and ophthalmologic injuries from electric scooter accidents. Twelve primary studie

Comparison of head-related injuries between standing electric scooter riders and pedestrians involved in motor vehicle collisions in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: While previous research suggests that e-scooter riders and pedestrians may exhibit similar injury patterns due to a shared standing posture, direct comparisons using unified datasets are lacking. This study aims to identify the distinctive injury characteristics of e-scooter riders by comparing them directly with pedestrians in motor vehicle collisions, with a particular focus on head-related injury risk. METHODS: Using traffic accident statistics from the National Police Agency of Japan (January 2024-June 2025), I analyzed 165 injured e-scooter riders and 23,599 injured pedestrian

Evaluation of PVA biodegradable electric conductive membranes for nerve regeneration in axonotmesis injuries: the rat sciatic nerve animal model.

The therapeutic effect of three polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes loaded with electrically conductive materials - carbon nanotubes (PVA-CNTs) and polypyrrole (PVA-PPy) - were tested in vivo for neuro-muscular regeneration after an axonotmesis injury in the rat sciatic nerve. The membranes electrical conductivity measured was 1.5 ± 0.5 × 10-6 S/m, 579 ± 0.6 × 10-6 S/m, and 1837.5 ± 0.7 × 10-6 S/m, respectively. At week-12, a residual motor and nociceptive deficit were present in all treated groups, but at week-12, a better recovery to normal gait pattern of the PVA-CNTs and PVA-PPy treated grou

Clinical management of electrical burns in the developing world: a case of electrical burn injury left untreated leading to amputation.

We discuss the case of a 26-year-old male patient from Northern Samar, the Philippines who was left without essential health services after the amputation of all four limbs following a high voltage (20 000 volts) injury in Metro Manila in 2011. Local health services in the developing world are faced with enormous challenges in providing first-line care for burn patients. The cost of maintaining a burn unit, finding suitable qualified staff, and appropriate referral mechanisms are only some of the challenges faced. Once a patient is discharged from hospital they face more obstacles in obtaining

Electrical Microenvironment Reconstruction and the Application of Biomaterials in Spinal Cord Injury.

The key challenge in restoring neural function after spinal cord injury stems from a vicious cycle triggered by the collapse of the bioelectrical microenvironment at the injury site: an 'electrical silence-neuronal degeneration-glial proliferation' cascade that conventional therapies fail to reverse. This review systematically summarizes the pathological mechanisms of electrical microenvironment imbalance and its critical role in neural regeneration. Furthermore, current intervention strategies based on biomaterials are outlined: evolving from passive reconstruction of electrical pathways usin

Electrical stimulation in peripheral nerve injuries: A review of current literature.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are a common consequence of trauma, often affecting the upper extremity. These injuries can cause debilitating sensory and motor disturbances and are frequently treated by orthopedic hand and plastic surgeons. When the connective tissue surrounding the nerve fibers is maintained, PNIs may spontaneously heal without intervention. However, in more significant injuries in which endoneurial tissue is disrupted, surgical treatment may be more appropriate. Due to the complex regenerative process and concurrent limitations of peripheral nerve healing, sensory and moto

Electric Stimulation Combined with Biomaterials for Repairing Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous system (CNS) disease with a high disability rate, and reconstructing motor function after SCI remains a global challenge. Recent advancements in rehabilitation and regenerative medicine offer new approaches to SCI repair. Electrical stimulation has been shown to alter cell membrane charge distribution, generating action potentials, and affecting cell behavior. This method aids axon regeneration and neurotrophic factor upregulation, crucial for nerve repair. Biomaterials, used as scaffolds or coatings in cell culture and tissue engineering, enhance
