Facilitation of electric forepaw stimulation-induced somatosensory activation in rats by additional acoustic stimulation: an fMRI investigation.

The influence of scanner acoustic noise on somatosensory activation pattern in rat cortex was investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast. This was achieved by two approaches. The first approach was to compare a conventional, loud fMRI sequence with a new sequence, in which the noise level was reduced by about 30 dB. In the second approach, the inner ear of the animal was destroyed, resulting in deafness. We compared the activation patterns obtained with both sequences before and after cochleotomy. The activated area

Electrical nerve stimulation using a stimulating catheter: what is the lower limit?

OBJECTIVES: To minimize the risk of intraneural injection when performing nerve blocks, some authors caution against injecting through a needle placed with motor responses observed at nerve stimulator output settings of 0.3 mA or less. We present a case of placing a continuous cervical paravertebral catheter with brisk motor response while stimulating the catheter at 0.05 mA, with no adverse sequelae. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old man scheduled for rotator cuff repair received a continuous cervical paravertebral block for intraoperative and postoperative pain control. A stimulating catheter was

Torque history of electrically stimulated human quadriceps: implications for stimulation therapy.

The time course of knee extension torque was measured in human quadriceps muscles during 30 min of transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). Ninety subjects were divided into six experimental groups (n = 15 per group), which received stimulation at one of the following frequency/duty cycle combinations: 10 Hz/50%, 30 Hz/50%, 50 Hz/50%, 10 Hz/70%, 30 Hz/70%, and 50 Hz/70%. Two-way analysis of variance revealed that the magnitude of the relative torque decrease (the percentage of decrease in torque relative to the initial value) was significantly different between frequencies (

Transcranial Electric Stimulation in Chronic Pain Patients: Clinical Profile of Treatment Responders.

PURPOSE: Pharmacological interventions for chronic pain (CP) show limited evidence and adverse side effects, and thus, the management of CP represents a challenge for the healthcare systems. In the last few years, transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES) has yielded positive results in relieving pain in patients with CP. However, the evidence has been obtained through group-level analyses without considering patient profiles that may benefit most from this technique. DESIGN: In this secondary analysis, we utilized data from a clinical trial involving 96 CP patients who undertook 15 daily con

Quasi-static approximation error of electric field analysis for transcranial current stimulation.

Objective.Numerical modeling of electric fields induced by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is currently a part of the standard procedure to predict and understand neural response. Quasi-static approximation (QSA) for electric field calculations is generally applied to reduce the computational cost. Here, we aimed to analyze and quantify the validity of the approximation over a broad frequency range.Approach.We performed electromagnetic modeling studies using an anatomical head model and considered approximations assuming either a purely ohmic medium (i.e. static formulation

Synergistic effect of electric stimulation and mesenchymal stem cells against Parkinson's disease.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has known beneficial effects on the core motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), likely through induction of dopamine release and sensitivity of dopamine receptors. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can salvage loss of dopamine in PD through their differentiation into dopaminergic neurons. However, it is not known if combined ECT and MSC transplantation may have a synergistic effect against PD. Here, we showed that ECT significantly increased the differentiation of the transplanted MSCs into dopaminergic neurons in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine

On the importance of precise electrode placement for targeted transcranial electric stimulation.

Transcranial electric stimulation (TES) is an increasingly popular method for non-invasive modulation of brain activity and a potential treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders. However, there are concerns about the reliability of its application because of variability in TES-induced intracranial electric fields across individuals. While realistic computational models offer can help to alleviate these concerns, their direct empirical validation is sparse, and their practical implications are not always clear. In this study, we combine direct intracranial measurements of electric fields generat

A New, High-Efficacy, Noninvasive Transcranial Electric Stimulation Tuned to Local Neurodynamics.

In this paper, we pose the following working hypothesis: in humans, transcranial electric stimulation (tES) with a time course that mimics the endogenous activity of its target is capable of altering the target's excitability. In our case, the target was the primary motor cortex (M1). We identified the endogenous neurodynamics of hand M1's subgroups of pyramidal neuronal pools in each of our subjects by applying Functional Source Separation (FSS) to their EEG recordings. We then tested whether the corticospinal excitability of the hand representation under the above described stimulation, whic

Low intensity transcranial electric stimulation: Safety, ethical, legal regulatory and application guidelines.

Low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) in humans, encompassing transcranial direct current (tDCS), transcutaneous spinal Direct Current Stimulation (tsDCS), transcranial alternating current (tACS), and transcranial random noise (tRNS) stimulation or their combinations, appears to be safe. No serious adverse events (SAEs) have been reported so far in over 18,000 sessions administered to healthy subjects, neurological and psychiatric patients, as summarized here. Moderate adverse events (AEs), as defined by the necessity to intervene, are rare, and include skin burns with tDCS d

[Modeling of torsion dystonia through electric stimulation of the vermis cerebellum cortex].

It was shown in acute experiments on cats that electrical stimulation (ES) (100-300 Hz, 5.0-10.0 V) of cat's cerebellar vermal cortex (lobules V and VI) was followed by head deviation in the direction opposite to that side on which the animal was laying, posture and movement disturbances and also by simultaneously occurred contraction of musculus-antagonists of extremities. The tonic and posture disturbances were observed during 40-60 s after ES cessation. During this time in the zone of ES in cerebellar cortex the high-amplitude synchronized activity was registered which was due to generator

[Late complications of VVI electric stimulation in patients with sick sinus syndrome].

Forty-nine patients, including 38 with documented bradysystolic sick-sinus syndrome (type I) and 11 with bradytachycardiac sick-sinus syndrome (type II) were studied. Follow-up of 24 patients with VVI stimulation (34 +/- 4 months) and 7 patients with AAI stimulation (23 +/- 1.2 months) demonstrated that VVI stimulation was associated with retrograde ventriculo-atrial conduction in 71% of patients, causing paroxysms of atrial fibrillation (5 patients, 4 of those having type I sick-sinus syndrome). Six patients developed permanent atrial fibrillation (including 5 with type I sick-sinus syndrome)

[Respiration rhythm-controlled electric stimulation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles--animal experiment findings].

Patients with bilateral paresis of the recurrent laryngeal nerves have primarily breathing difficulties. But on the other hand the common operations for widening the glottis produce voice problems. To overcome these difficulties a muscle stimulation device was developed, which is triggered by the inspiratory motion of the thorax. With this device impulses are transmitted by radiofrequency from a transmitter located outside the body to a receiver implanted into subcutaneous tissue of the neck and thence by electrode wires to the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA). In the dogs with one cut re

Reactivity of isolated bovine facial vessels to electric stimulation and to drugs.

The effects of electric stimulation on isometric force generation of isolated helical strips of bovine facial arteries (BFA) and veins (BFV) were investigated. Whereas BFA always contracted, electrically stimulated BFV showed a biphasic response, i.e. a small, transient contraction followed by an intense relaxation. The findings presented suggest a neurogenic response for the vasodilator component of BFV response to electric stimulation. Exogenous catecholamines and serotonin dilated the veins; the effects were antagonized by propranolol and dihydroergotamine, respectively. Dopamine-induced re
