Electroacupuncture relieves visceral hypersensitivity through modulation of the endogenous cannabinoid system.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) can effectively relieve visceral hypersensitivity (VH). However, its mechanisms are still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of EA on VH caused by ileitis, and whether EA relieves VH by modulating the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS). METHODS: Thirty male native goats were randomly divided into a saline-treated control group (Saline, n = 9) and three 2,4,6-trinitro-benzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-treated VH model groups that underwent injection of TNBS into the ileal wall to induce VH and remained untreated (TNBS, n = 9) or received six sessions

Targeting gut-brain axis through scalp-abdominal electroacupuncture in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is initiated in the gut rather than in the brain. Thus, targeting the gut in early stages may have the potential to halt disease progression and alleviate symptoms. Various acupuncture techniques have been used to treat patients with PD and have shown promising results. However, previous acupuncture techniques focused on the brain and motor symptoms. We aimed to determine if targeting PD patients' gut-brain axis through electroacupuncture could be an effective, safe, and low-cost therapeutic option for management o

Case report: Electroacupuncture for acute pain flare-up of knee osteoarthritis.

Acute pain flare-up of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common disease in orthopedics and is mainly treated with analgesic drugs. Patients usually refuse to take western medicines orally owing to gastrointestinal side effects or unsatisfactory treatment results. We report the case of a 69-year-old woman who had an acute pain flare-up of right KOA induced by long-distance walking. As the patient refused medication, we used electroacupuncture (EA) to relieve her symptoms. EA with a 2-Hz frequency and a 1-2-mA intensity had an analgesic effect on the acute pain flare-up of KOA. After 12 weeks of EA

Complete Recovery Following Electroacupuncture Therapy in Refractory Unilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Role of electroacupuncture (EA) in refractory unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) remains unclear but might be promising for the Meniere's disease. Two cases of unilateral SNHL who were unresponsive to conventional treatment of sudden SNHL showed complete recovery after receiving EA therapy. The first case was a 46-year-old woman who received EA in the seventh month after the acute onset of sudden right hearing loss and tinnitus. She had mild-to-moderate degree of SNHL at high frequencies in the right ear with episodic vertigo. The second case was a 55-year-old woman who received EA i

Electroacupuncture promotes insulin-like growth factors system in ovariectomized osteoporosis rats.

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (PMOP) is induced by the deficiency of estrogen in postmenopausal women. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been confirmed to be effective in clinic. We adopted ovariectomized osteoporosis model of rats to observe the role of EA in PMOP. Fifty female SD rats were divided randomly into 5 groups: intact (INT, n = 10), sham operation (Sham, n = 10), model (n = 10), estrogen (E, n = 10) and electroacupuncture (EA, n = 10). The bone mineral content (BMC) and the bone mineral density (BMD) were examined in lumbar(1-6) and right thigh-bone, respectively, and estrodiol (E(2)), ins

CHRNA3⁺ nociceptors prime the cutaneous sensory interface to enhance electroacupuncture analgesia.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence determined that acupoints frequently overlap with regions of referred somatic hypersensitivity induced by visceral disease, a phenomenon known as acupoint sensitization. This state is typically characterized by sensory hypersensitivity and functional enhancement, often accompanied by superior therapeutic outcomes following acupuncture. However, the neurobiological mechanisms that prime acupoints for enhanced responsiveness remain poorly understood. METHODS: Using a rat model of TNBS intracolonic injection-induced colitis and relative acupoint sensitization, we inve

Electroacupuncture Intervention Improves Post-Stroke Dysphagia by Modulating NMDAR1 and GABABR1.

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common complication after acute stroke. It can be effectively alleviated by electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation at the Baihui acupoint; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: Male ICR mice were used, and the suture occlusion method was employed to establish the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) mouse model. EA stimulation was applied to the Baihui acupoint for intervention. After treatment, the survival rate of the mice was assessed. Subsequently, a water swallow test was conducted to evaluate the degree of dysphagia in

Ultrasound-Guided Electroacupuncture for Thoracic Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Case Report.

Myofascial pain syndrome is a painful condition characterized by trigger points in muscles that can be treated effectively with acupuncture. While cross-fiber palpation can help localize trigger points, needle accuracy may be limited and accidental puncture of delicate structures, such as the lung, is a risk, as evidenced by reports of pneumothorax after acupuncture. Ultrasound imaging can help in reducing the risk of iatrogenic pneumothorax from needling, but there is a paucity of papers describing the use of ultrasound imaging during acupuncture. We present a report on electroacupuncture tre

Naloxone reverses inhibitory effect of electroacupuncture on sympathetic cardiovascular reflex responses.

Acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA) have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of diseases and conditions, including angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. In a feline model of reflex-induced reversible myocardial ischemia, electrical stimulation of the median nerves to mimic EA (Neiguan acupoint) significantly improved ischemic dysfunction, secondary to an inhibitory effect of EA on reflex pressor effects evoked by bradykinin (BK). The central mechanism of EA's inhibitory effect in this model is unknown. Accordingly, in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats, BK
