Electrochemotherapy as Promising Treatment Option in Rare Recurrent Cutaneous Neoplasm of the Scalp: Case Report of an Elderly Patient.

BACKGROUND: Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a tumor that commonly presents on the head or neck in older individuals. Making a definitive diagnosis of AFX is challenging, and frequently, it is hard to distinguish from pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS). There are no clear recommendations regarding the treatment of AFX, but an extensive surgery is actually considered the best option. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a novel therapeutic modality of local treatment in which the application of electrical pulses, enhancing cell membrane permeability, allows greater intracellular accumulation of chemothera

Electrochemotherapy with intravenous bleomycin for advanced non-melanoma skin cancers and for cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases from melanoma.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of cutaneous advanced non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) and multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous melanoma metastases (Mm) represents a main therapeutic challenge. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is an anticancer procedure that facilitates the penetration of cytotoxic drugs into cancer cells by means of the application of electrical pulses. The aim of our study was to evaluate efficacy and tolerability of ECT in the treatment of advanced NMSC and Mm. METHODS: Thirteen patients with a total of 88 cutaneous and subcutaneous tumour lesions were selected (69 Mm in 6 patients and

Electrochemotherapy as a single or adjuvant treatment to surgery of cutaneous sarcoid tumours in horses: a 31-case retrospective study.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of electrochemotherapy (ECT) with cisplatin as a single or adjuvant treatment for sarcoids in equids. Different treatment options with different success rates were proposed. Thirty-one horses and one donkey with different clinical type, size and location of tumours were treated with ECT as a single treatment (18 animals with 52 tumour nodules) or as adjuvant treatment with marginal surgical excision (14 animals with 18 tumour nodules). In animals treated only with ECT with cisplatin, complete response was obtained in 48/52 (92.3 per cent) nodul

Surgery and Adjuvant Electrochemotherapy Compared to Surgery Alone for Treatment of Canine Incompletely Excised Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

The predominant challenge in canine soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) is achieving local tumour control, for which surgical excision remains the standard treatment. When complete margins are not attainable, adjuvant therapy may be recommended. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) combines cytotoxic drugs with electric pulses to enhance drug uptake and antitumour efficacy and has shown promising results. However, its role in incompletely excised STSs remains unclear, with limited control-group studies to confirm its efficacy. This retrospective study compared recurrence rate and time to recurrence (TTR) between

Custom bipolar electrode for bleomycin-based electrochemotherapy in patient-derived uveal melanoma in ovo and ex vivo.

INTRODUCTION: Uveal melanoma (UM) is a rare tumor entity and the predominant primary intraocular malignancy in adulthood. Despite high local tumor control rates, metastatic disease remains frequent and systemic therapeutic options are limited. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) with bleomycin enhances intracellular drug uptake through electroporation (EP), thereby increasing targeted antitumor activity. This study investigated the effects of bleomycin-based ECT delivered using a custom bipolar electrode in UM patient-derived xenografts (PDX). METHODS: UM PDX were analyzed in both in ovo and ex vivo ex

Feline Injection-Site Sarcoma Treated with Surgery, Orthovoltage Radiotherapy, and Electrochemotherapy. A Retrospective Series of 72 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Feline injection-site sarcoma (FISS) can arise from various agents that induce inflammation in the tissue, such as the injection of vaccines, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or even sutures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 72 cats with FISS grade 1 to 3 located in the spine or costo-abdominal area were included. They were separated into two categories: (A) patients treated with surgery with clean margins alone, surgery plus orthovoltage radiotherapy, and surgery plus electrochemotherapy. And category (B), patients treated with surgery without clean margins,

In Vitro Evaluation of Electrochemotherapy Combined with Sotorasib in Pancreatic Carcinoma Cell Lines Harboring Distinct KRAS Mutations.

Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest malignancies, with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. Novel strategies are therefore urgently needed. Sotorasib, a KRAS G12C-specific inhibitor, offers targeted treatment for a small subset of patients with this mutation. Electrochemotherapy (ECT), which enhances the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents through electroporation-induced membrane permeabilization, has shown promise in various tumor types, including deep-seated malignancies such as pancreatic cancer. Combining ECT with sotorasib may potentiate antitumor effects in KRAS G12C-mu

Efficacy of gabapentin as pain management of T2-T4 feline facial squamous cell carcinoma treated with electrochemotherapy.

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) presents an effective alternative for local tumor management, particularly valuable when surgery is not feasible. The side effects are generally mild, including local inflammation, edema, and changes in pigmentation or alopecia. However, severe side effects such as necrosis, dehiscence, or fistula formation may occur if the tumor involves the full tissue thickness. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of gabapentin in managing pain in cats with facial squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) staged T2-T4 (N0M0) treated with ECT. A subjective survey outlining typical quality

Efficacy and safety of electrochemotherapy combined with peritumoral IL-12 gene electrotransfer of canine mast cell tumours.

Electrochemotherapy combined with peritumoral interleukin-12 (IL-12) gene electrotransfer was used for treatment of mast cell tumours in 18 client-owned dogs. Local tumour control, recurrence rate, as well as safety of combined therapy were evaluated. One month after the therapy, no side effects were recorded and good local tumour control was observed with high complete responses rate which even increased during the observation period to 72%. IL-12 gene electrotransfer resulted in 78% of patients with detectable serum IFN-γ and/or IL-12 levels. In the treated tumours vascular changes as well a

Electrochemotherapy for the treatment of an incompletely excised subcutaneous low-grade epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in a budgerigar parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus).

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous tumors are rarely described in avian and are frequently of viral origin. Solid tumors of vascular origin are seldom reported and usually result in difficult management by surgery alone. We describe the outcome of a subcutaneous low-grade epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) treated with the combination of surgery and electrochemotherapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old male budgerigar parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus) was referred for evaluation of a 2-month non-healing exophytic mass on the left wing. The bird was bright, alert, and responsive, with a 2 × 1 cm prolif

Electrochemotherapy with cisplatin increases survival and induces immunogenic responses in murine models of lung cancer and colorectal cancer.

Electrochemotherapy is an emerging treatment modality for cancer patients which can effectively reduce tumour burden and induce immunogenic cell death. Electrochemotherapy is most commonly used with bleomycin as the drug of choice, here we examine the efficacy of electrochemotherapy with cisplatin. Electrochemotherapy with cisplatin was found to effectively reduce tumour growth in a range of murine models and induce significant intratumoural recruitment of myeloid and humoral immune cells. Following the observations of immune system mobilisation, we have shown an ability of electrochemotherapy

Oral Mucosa Model for Electrochemotherapy Treatment of Dog Mouth Cancer: Ex Vivo, In Silico, and In Vivo Experiments.

Electrochemotherapy (EQT) is a local cancer treatment well established to cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors. Electric fields are applied to biological tissue in order to improve membrane permeability for cytotoxic drugs. This phenomenon is called electroporation or electropermeabilization. Studies have reported that tissue conductivity is electric field dependent. Electroporation numerical models of biological tissues are essential in treatment planning. Tumors of the mouth are very common in dogs. Inadequate EQT treatment of oral tumor may be caused by significant anatomic variations between

Coupling treatment planning with navigation system: a new technological approach in treatment of head and neck tumors by electrochemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy provides highly effective local treatment for a variety of tumors. In deep-seated tumors of the head and neck, due to complex anatomy of the region or inability to cover the whole tumor with standard electrodes, the use of long single needle electrodes is mandatory. In such cases, a treatment plan provides the information on the optimal configuration of the electrodes to adequately cover the tumor with electric field, while the accurate placement of the electrodes in the surgical room in patients can remain a problem. Therefore, during electrochemotherapy of two

A Video Protocol of a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial - Electrochemotherapy of Cutaneous Metastases with Reduced Dose Bleomycin (BLESS Trial).

Cutaneous metastases in patients with incurable cancer represent a significant problem as they often cause pain, discomfort, and emotional distress that affect everyday life. Finding treatment options that are both effective and gentle is essential. ECT offers one such possibility. Here, short, high-voltage electrical pulses are applied directly to the tumor, briefly opening tumor cells, allowing chemotherapy to enter more effectively and kill cancer cells. Traditionally, patients receive 15.000 IU/m2 of bleomycin intravenously, but emerging evidence suggests that a lower dose may be just as e

Electrochemotherapy for the palliative management of non-skin-origin head and neck cancer: case series and UK national survey.

OBJECTIVES: Electrochemotherapy uses electric fields to facilitate the influx of chemotherapy into cancer cells, producing a targeted effect. For head and neck cancer, it is mainly used for palliation of non-skin-origin metastases. It is used infrequently in the UK. This paper presents our experience and a UK survey to identify its frequency of use. METHODS: Between 2016 and 2019, a prospective database was created and reviewed. Only patients with non-skin-origin metastatic head and neck cancer, with no other palliative options, were included. Survival length, complications and symptomatic be

Effect of electrochemotherapy with betulinic acid or cisplatin on regulation of heat shock proteins in metastatic human carcinoma cells in vitro.

Betulinic acid (BTA) is naturally occurring triterpene that has received interest as a novel therapeutic substance with cytotoxicity towards a number of cancer cell lines. Despite the wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological effects, its effect may be limited its lipophobic properties. Therefore, strategies to improve the access of BTA to the cells are required to enhance the anticancer effects. Electroporation (EP) enables increased inflow of drugs into cancer cells, even at low doses, which may reduce the side effects caused by high doses of chemotherapy. The potential application of
