INTRODUCTION: The second lumbrical-interossei latency difference test (2LINT) is used frequently for electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). A premotor potential observed with 2LINT has been identified as a median-nerve sensory nerve action potential. We evaluated the utility of the premotor potential latency analysis (i.e., premotor potential study; PPS) for CTS electrodiagnosis.
METHODS: Sensitivity, specificity, and percentage "no evoked response" (%NER) values were compared prospectively among PPS, median-nerve sensory nerve-conduction studies (NCSs) for digits 1, 2, and 4, and

Median neuropathy at the wrist can confound the electrodiagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), since both conditions can prolong median distal motor latency. Dispersion of the distal CMAP (DCMAP) has recently emerged as a potentially useful adjunct in the electrodiagnosis of CIDP, with good specificity in distinguishing CIDP from certain axon-loss disorders. However, it is uncertain whether focal compression neuropathies produce dispersion of the DCMAP in a manner similar to CIDP. In this study we compared median DCMAP duration in 27 patients with CIDP and 86 wit

Radiculopathy is a common neurologic disorder. Electrodiagnosis can provide a physiologic assessment of the localization, degree of axon loss, severity, and chronicity of the intraspinal canal lesion, and distinguish it from other neuromuscular disorders. This article reviews electrodiagnostic aspects related to evaluating patients with suspected radiculopathies.

Electrodiagnosis is routinely integrated into clinical neurophysiology practice for peripheral nerve disease diagnoses, such as neuropathy, demyelinating disorders, nerve entrapment/impingement, plexopathy, or radiculopathy. Measured with conventional surface electrodes, the propagation of peripheral nerve action potentials along a nerve is the result of ionic current flow which, according to Ampere's Law, generates a small magnetic field that is also detected as an "action current" by magnetometers, such as superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) Magnetoencephalography (MEG) syste

Electrodiagnosis of neuromuscular junction disorders relies on repetitive nerve stimulation tests (RS) and single-fiber EMG (SFEMG). RS tests are usually performed on proximal and distal nerves (axillary, accessory, radial, facial, ulnar, median, peroneal). Ischemic test substantially improves ulnar RS sensitivity. More recently RS of masseter and hypoglossal nerves have been proposed to increase RS sensitivity in patients with bulbar symptoms in myasthenia gravis (MG). RS of phrenic and long thoracic nerves could be used in MG patients with respiratory symptoms. Sensitivities of these tests a

This article discusses the electrodiagnostic assessment of radiculopathy. Relevant anatomy initially is reviewed followed by discussion surrounding the approach to nerve conduction studies and needle electrode examination when it comes to radiculopathy evaluation. Pitfalls of the electrodiagnosis versus clinical diagnosis of radiculopathy and the definitions of acute versus chronic, and active versus inactive, are reviewed.

Nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremity occur at predicable locations. The diagnosis of nerve compression or nerve entrapment is based on the neurologic and electrodiagnostic examinations. The anatomy, neurophysiology, and electrodiagnosis of nerve compression are discussed. Common and uncommon compression and entrapment syndromes of the upper extremity are described. Errors in diagnosis occur when the neurologic or electrodiagnostic examinations are incomplete or inaccurate.

Hereditary motor sensory neuropathies (HSMN) encompass a wide range of related neuromuscular disorders. Electrodiagnostic studies are a powerful tool in differentiating between the different types. Timely rehabilitative treatment of the deformities may result in significant functional improvement and delay or obviate need for future surgery. This article outlines types of HSMN, focusing on the electrodiagnosis and treatment of each.

Urodynamics is used as an help to aid the diagnosis of sphincter or bladder dysfunction mechanisms and as an evaluation tool of drugs (tests) or retraining (biofeedback). The following are used: uroflowmetry sphincterometry cystometry, electrodiagnosis. These data are recorded simultaneously. In rehabilitation medicine, a special place is given to the active patient's participation during the examination. This allows a good approach to voluntary control and micturition reflex.

Extranodal manifestations of lymphoma are well described in the literature and occur in 20 to 30% of patients. Skeletal muscle involvement is rare. We describe the case of a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a forearm muscle. At the age of 86, the featured patient started experiencing continuous, progressive and high intensity pain that was more frequent at night and localized in the right dominant hand. It was associated with paresthesia and hypoesthesia, primarily in the thumb, index finger and middle finger. Clinical examination and electrodiagnosis led to the diagnosis of carpal tunne

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the electrodiagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) subtypes at first study.
METHODS: The reference electrodiagnosis was obtained in 53 demyelinating and 45 axonal GBS patients on the basis of two serial studies and results of anti-ganglioside antibodies assay. We retrospectively employed sparse linear discriminant analysis (LDA), two existing electrodiagnostic criteria sets (Hadden et al., 1998; Rajabally et al., 2015) and one we propose that additionally evaluates duration of motor responses, sural sparing pattern and defines reversible conduction failure (RCF) in m

A newly introduced term, "axonal conduction block," brought a confusion in the electrodiagnostic diagnosis of Guillain-Barrè syndrome (GBS). I am proposing the term "nodal conduction block" for "axonal conduction block." This unifying concept of nodal conduction block will accommodate both the traditional concept of demyelination as well as the new concept of nodopathy in the "axonal form of GBS,", making the practice of electrodiagnosis much easier.

Electrodiagnosis is a powerful tool for evaluating lower extremity disorders that stem from the peripheral nervous system. Electrodiagnostic testing can help differentiate neurogenic versus non-neurogenic causes of complaints such as pain, weakness, and paresthesias. It can help practitioners pinpoint the anatomic location and reveal the underlying pathology in peripheral nerve lesions. This article focuses on the electrodiagnostic evaluation of neurogenic processes that present as foot and ankle symptoms.

Posterior tibial neurothlipsis in the retromalleolar space, secondary to internal fixation of a prior ankle fracture, is presented in the following report. The possibility of a tarsal tunnel syndrome cannot be ruled out. No apparent similar reference is made in the medical literature concerning the above etiology of posterior tibial compression/neurothlipsis/tarsal tunnel syndrome. Electrodiagnosis with sensory nerve conduction velocities is reviewed for more accurate diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a generic term for various neuropathies coexisting in a single patient. Clinical diagnosis alone can be misleading, yet routine electrodiagnostic studies in diabetes care are rare. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) is a recognized DN risk factor with potential screening value. This article highlights the diagnostic challenges and raises awareness of the often underdiagnosed neuropathic conditions in diabetes patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present common entrapment neuropathy cases from our diabetes clinic's electrodiagnosis laboratory in Iași, Romania.

This review of the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) emphasizes electrodiagnosis and includes a case report. A 50-year-old woman had become progressively weaker over 1.5 years. The suspected diagnosis was confirmed by the clinical electrophysiological findings and was made 6 months before the patient's oat-cell carcinoma was found. After treating with local radiation and chemotherapy, the myasthenic syndrome went into remission as the pulmonary lesion resolved.

OBJECTIVE: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is classified into the two major subtypes; acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) and acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). Previous studies have suggested that AIDP is predominant and AMAN is rare in Western countries, whereas AMAN is not always uncommon in East Asia. We aimed to clarify the incidence of the subtypes of GBS in Japan.
METHODS: We performed a prospective multicentre survey over 3 years (2007-2010). Clinical and electrophysiological findings were collected from 184 patients with GBS in 23 tertiary neurology institutes. An
