Journal of clinical neurophysiology : official publication of the American Electroencephalographic Society2024eng
PURPOSE: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that can be of diagnostic value in patients with cognitive disorders. In recent years, increasing emphasis has been on quantitative EEG analysis, which is not easily accessible in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of visual EEG assessment to distinguish different causes of cognitive disorders.
METHODS: Patients with cognitive disorders from a specialized memory clinic cohort underwent routine workup including EEG, neuropsychological testing and brain imaging. Electro

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found dysfunctional emotion regulation in bulimia nervosa (BN), including self-reported greater habitual use of maladaptive strategies such as suppression than in healthy individuals. However, there is no evidence on the performance in the implementation of expressive suppression in BN. The aim of this study was to investigate brain activity (in terms of ERP) and self-reported ratings associated with expressive suppression of emotions elicited by positive and negative stimuli in women with BN.
METHOD: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded from 23 female

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurologic emergency requiring immediate time-sensitive treatment to minimize neuronal injury and systemic complications. Minimizing time to administration of first- and second-line therapy is necessary to optimize the chances of successful seizure termination in generalized convulsive SE (GCSE). The approach to refractory and superrefractory GCSE is less well defined. Multiple agents with differing complementary actions that facilitate seizure termination are recommended. Nonconvulsive SE (NCSE) has a wide range of presentations and approaches to treatment. Contin

OBJECTIVE: Degenerative dementia is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and neuropsychiatric symptoms. People with Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, show synaptic loss and disruption of functional brain networks along with neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Electroencephalography (EEG) directly reflects synaptic activity, and among patients with AD it is associated with slowing of background activity. The purpose of this study was to identify associations between neuropsychiatric symptoms and EEG in patients with dementia and to determine whethe

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic tremor (OT) is characterized by a sensation of instability while standing, associated with high frequency (1318 Hz) tremor in the legs. Small retrospective series have reported electroencephalography (EEG) findings in OT with discordant results.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 30 OT subjects. Mean age = 68.3 (range 5487) with mean disease duration 16.3 years (range 444). A modified 1020 system EEG recording with additional midline electrodes was obtained. EMG electrodes were placed on quadricep muscles. EEG recording was performed at rest, during sleep and while sta

Autistic epileptiform regression is an uncommon but extensively described malady in children. The clinico-etiological spectrum of this entity ranges from electrical status epilepticus in sleep to various neurogenetic and neurodegenerative disorders. Identification of these disorders is crucial considering their therapeutic and prognostic implications. Simple investigations such as neuroimaging and electroencephalography with activation procedures can provide valuable diagnostic clues in resource-limited settings; facilitating targeted genetic/metabolic testing. Here we report a 3.5-year-old gi

BACKGROUND: In spite of the overwhelming significance of knowledge of basic elements of electroencephalography (EEG) in its application to the diagnostic workup and the management of patients with suspected or already established generalized epilepsy (GE), there is a dearth of data on the pattern and utility of clinical variables that can independently determine EEG abnormalities in GE.
OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to evaluate the frequency and pattern of EEG abnormality as well as assess the utility of clinical variables in predicting the likelihood of an abnormal EEG in GE.
METHODS: I

BACKGROUND: The utility of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) monitoring has been established for patients with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of aEEG in the diagnostic process and treatment of patients with encephalopathy due to inborn errors of metabolism.
METHODS: Cases collected through an international registry were divided into 5 groups of metabolic disorders. Common aEEG features were sought for each group.
RESULTS: In total, 21/30 (70%) cases had abnormal aEEG background patterns, 18/30 (60%) showed seizure activity. Patient

Continuous monitoring of electrocortical brain activity with amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is important in neonatology. aEEG is affected by, for example, maturity, encephalopathy, and drugs. Neonatal research uses rat pups of different ages. Postnatal day (P) 7 rats are suggested to be equivalent neurodevelopmentally to near-term infants. We hypothesized that electroencephalography (EEG) and aEEG in P1-P21 rats follow the same developmental pattern with respect to background activity and the longest interburst interval (IBI) as that seen in infants from 23-wk gestational a

The case of a 4-year-old girl with valproate-induced stupor and electroencephalographic pattern of increased fast activity is reported. Stupor and fast activity have been related to the effects on gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptors mediated by endozepines or by exogenous drugs such as benzodiazepines or barbiturates. The action of valproate in GABA metabolism and in GABA neuronal networks could produce a similar result through a hyperrecruitment of GABA-mediated postsynaptic transmission.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD) and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) represent conditions with increased risk of abnormal neurologic outcome. The role of aEEG in disorders where cerebral perfusion/oxygenation is affected by cardiac or pulmonary disease is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to characterize amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) traces in nonasphyxiated neonates with cardiorespiratory compromise secondary to PPHN or CHD.
DESIGN/METHODS: Three hundred sixty-three aEEG records (June 2004-November 2006) were re

PURPOSE: Stroke is the most common disease among neurological disorders, often resulting in handicap, complications and mortality. Recent studies revealed that electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) were noninvasive but effective methods to assess the prognosis of stroke patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of EEG and ECG for the prognosis of ischemic stroke.
METHODS: Thirty five patients with supratentorial ischemic stroke and muscle weakness were included in the study carried out at the Ali-EbneAbitaleb Hospital, Rafsanjan, Iran. At admission, muscl

A recent study and report in which hyperventilation was used during electroencephalography (EEG) in 6 children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and seizures, without serious complication, prompted a cautionary response regarding the potential risks attending the practice of EEG hyperventilation in SCD patients. Earlier reports of neurological impairment and stroke precipitated by the routine use of hyperventilation in children with SCD are reviewed, the mechanism and management of vascular infarction following hyperventilation are discussed, and readers are reminded of the AEEGS guidelines and c

One hundred and thirty four newborn children of 37 weeks' gestation age or greater, with evidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following perinatal asphyxia and surviving through the neonatal period were prospectively studied. The study involved evaluation of clinical outcome and the presence of epilepsy associated with the EEG pattern in the neonatal period. The results prove that the presence of a burst suppression EEG pattern and a hypoactive/flat EEG are negative prognostic criteria. In presence of a focal or multifocal pattern it is difficult to establish a clear prognostic criteria.

In psychiatric hospitals confusional states are frequent and represent about 20% of requests for EEG's. This study, covering a one year period, at S-Jean de Dieu psychiatric hospital in Lyon, revealed among all EEG's carried out for a confusional state the existence of a high proportion of pathological signs (59%). Etiological research demonstrates that a large proportion of these patients is diagnosed as senile dementia. Nevertheless, even if pure organic causes are rare, EEG remains an indispensable complement to clinical practice.

A comprehensive examination of children aged one to 12 years suffering from epidemic parotitis (mumps) was carried out. Changes on the electro-, rheo-, and echoencephalograms were revealed, these changes depending on the form (glandular or glandular-nervous) and the period of the disease. The most pronounced disturbances were noted in the acute period of the disease in children with the glandular-nervous form of parotitis. As the children recovered the EEG, REG and echo-EEG findings in most of them still remained abnormal. This shows that the epidemic parotitis virus affects the nervous system
