Hierarchically Engineered NiSe2-CuFeO2 Heterostructures on Biomass-Derived Carbonized Wood for Efficient Ethanol-Assisted Water Electrolysis.

Rational design strategies for developing advanced electrocatalysts that replace the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction with the more thermodynamically favorable ethanol oxidation offer an effective pathway toward energy-efficient hydrogen production. Herein, we strategically integrate NiSe2 (NS) and CuFeO2 (CFO) microstructures over biomass-derived nitrogen-doped carbonized wood (NCW) to construct a 3D, binder-free, and bifunctional NS-CFO@NCW electrode with a hierarchically interconnected heterostructure. The fusion of CFO cubes into the rough NS spheres establishes a strong inte

Covalent surface coordination enables efficient and stable formaldehyde-water co-electrolysis over non-stoichiometric cuprous oxide.

The activity-stability trade-off of copper-based oxide catalysts in formaldehyde oxidation remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we resolve this trade-off by grafting N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) onto non-stoichiometric Cu2+1O nanocubes (denoted as Cu2+1O, a Cu+-rich single-phase oxide) through covalent CuC bonds. This molecular surface coordination strategy delivers two concurrent benefits. First, strong σ-electron donation from NHCs shifts the Cu d-band center from -2.106 eV to -2.416 eV, weakening intermediate adsorption and lowering the reaction free-energy change of the rate-determinin

Enhanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis Using Cr-Doped NiCoP/Ni3S2 Hollow Nanowires with Heterointerfaces as Bifunctional Catalysts.

For the goal of mitigating energy scarcity via hydrogen production from water electrolysis, the high performance, low cost transition-metal-based catalysts are essential to be designed and manufactured. In this study, we prepare chromium-doped nickel cobalt phosphide/nickel sulfide (Cr-NiCoP/Ni3S2) heterostructured hollow nanowires on conductive nickel foam through a two-step hydrothermal method coupled with low temperature phosphorization procedure. Benefiting from the remarkable electron transport capability inherent in transition metal compounds, the large specific surface area afforded by

Ionomer engineering for optimized water channels in industry-scale water electrolysis using non-noble metal catalyst.

The application of non-noble metal catalysts to replace high-cost iridium plays a critical role in the industrialization of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, the activity and stability of non-noble metal catalysts are unsatisfactory especially at high current densities. This can partially be attributed to the limited water channels of Nafion ionomer in the catalyst layer which impede proton hydrate transport, resulting in a low local pH and accelerating non-noble metal dissolution. We propose that introducing an amphiphilic-like CF3CF2CF2CH2OH molecule into Nafion i

Online Coupling High-Temperature Electrolysis with Carbonylation Reactions: A Powerful Method for Continuous Carbon Dioxide Utilization.

Despite being widely available, the broad utilization of CO2 for chemical production remains in its infancy. The difficulty of using CO2 as an important resource for the chemical industry lies in the high stability of the molecule and its associated inertia. In this work, we demonstrate how to overcome these limitations by utilizing a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) with an optimized cathode to produce dry CO through the high-temperature electrolysis of CO2. We further integrate this process with a synthesis setup in a continuous-flow coil reactor to boost reactivity in various carbonylat

Operando X-ray characterization platform to unravel catalyst degradation under accelerated stress testing in CO2 electrolysis.

Membrane-electrode assembly (MEA)-based CO2 electrolysis shows great potential for industrial-scale chemical production, but long-term stability remains a key challenge. The degradation mechanisms of catalysts and electrodes in MEAs are not yet fully understood. Here a customized operando synchrotron X-ray characterization platform was established to track the time- and space-resolved evolution of ions and water movement, crystal structure and catalyst variations in MEAs. Using Au and Ag model catalysts, we show that the crystalline phase catalyst stability and catalyst-substrate adhesion are

Phosphorus-Modified Amorphous High-Entropy CoFeNiCrMn Compound as High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Hydrazine-Assisted Water Electrolysis.

Exploiting highly active and bifunctional catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) is a prerequisite for the hydrogen acquisition. High-entropy materials have received widespread attention in catalysis, but the high-performance bifunctional electrodes are still lacking. Herein, a novel P-modified amorphous high-entropy CoFeNiCrMn compound is developed on nickel foam (NF) by one-step electrodeposition strategy. The achieved CoFeNiCrMnP/NF delivers remarkable HER and HzOR performance, where the overpotentials as low as 51 and 268 mV are realize

Microbial electrolysis cell coupled with anaerobic granular sludge: A novel technology for real bilge water treatment.

In the current study, treatment of undiluted real bilge water (BW) and the production of methane was examined for the first time using a membraneless single chamber Microbial Electrolysis Cell (MEC) with Anaerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) for its biodegradation. Initially, Anaerobic Toxicity Assays (ATAs) were used to evaluate the effect of undiluted real BW on the methanogenic activity of AGS. According to the results, BW shown higher impact to acetoclastics compared to hydrogenotrophic methanogens which proved to be more tolerant. However, dilution of BW caused lower inhibition allowing BW biod

Low-energy densification of carbon anodes for fluorine electrolysis applications via a multi-cycle impregnation-carbonization route.

Hard-to-control energy input and reliability trade-offs in conventional multi-high-temperature routes hinder densification of carbon anodes used in high-temperature electrochemical systems such as fluorine electrolysis, and the coupling between process parameters, pore evolution and properties remains insufficiently resolved. Here we report a scalable tri-impregnation semi-carbonization plus one final carbonization route that lowers peak carbonization stresses while maintaining densification efficiency. An infiltration framework that treats open/closed pores as vertical/horizontal capillaries

Nanoscale Oxygen Bubble Dynamics and Coupled Transport at Anode Catalyst Layer Particle Surfaces in PEM Water Electrolysis.

The production of green hydrogen via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is significantly constrained by mass transport limitations at the anode, where oxygen bubble evolution obstructs catalyst sites and compromises performance at high current densities. Conventional models fail to capture the nanoscale interplay between bubble dynamics and local electrochemical reactions, thereby obscuring critical design principles for nanostructural optimization. To address this, we developed a nanoscale multiphysics framework using the Lattice Boltzmann Method to directly couple bubble dyn

Magnetic-Field-Enabled Ultrafast Quench Synthesis of Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) play a critical role in diverse catalytic applications, but their efficient synthesis remains a significant challenge. Herein, we develop an ultrafast magnetic-field-enabled quench (MFEQ) strategy to synthesize a series of M1/G-FeOx (M═Ni, Fe, Co, Ir, Ru, and Pt) SACs within a few seconds. Using Ni1/G-FeOx as a proof of concept, this method leverages the rapid quenching of thermally incandescent Fe foam into an Ni-containing ethanol solution, triggering simultaneous graphene formation and Ni anchoring. The Ni1/G-FeOx catalyst shows exceptional alkaline oxygen evolu

Highly efficient activation of periodate by anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis for 3-chlorophenol degradation in water.

Periodate (PI) activation by anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis (ACGDE) was used to degrade 3-chlorophenol (3-CP) in water. The effects of the PI concentration, current intensity (mA), anions (Cl- and SO42-), organic compounds (humic acid and RhB), and initial solution pH on the 3-CP removal rate were studied. The results show that PI was efficiently activated by ACGDE, leading to the rapid degradation of 3-CP. For the 1.5-mmol/L (mM) PI activated by ACGDE for 1.5 min, the removal rate of 3-CP (100%) was 19 or 6.7 times higher than that of PI or ACGDE alone. The decomposition of 3-CP w

Magnetic biochar enhanced microbial electrolysis cell with anaerobic digestion for complex organic matter degradation in landfill leachate.

Combining microbial electrolytic cells with anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) was considered as an important method for enhancing complex organic matter degradation. However, the magnetic biochar (MBC) addition would be an effective approach for enhancing biodegradation in MEC-AD. By designing orthogonal experiments, the optimal parameters of MBC-enhanced MEC-AD system for landfill leachate treatment were determined. The results indicated that the optimal conditions were identified as HRT of 72 h, electrode spacing of 2.5 cm, and applied voltage of 0.8 V. Under these conditions, the COD removal eff

Direct Hydroxylarylation of Benzylic Carbons (sp3/sp2/sp) via Radical-Radical Cross-Coupling Powered by Paired Electrolysis.

Diaryl alcohol moieties are widespread in pharmaceuticals. Existing methods for the synthesis of diaryl alcohols require the use of pre-functionalized benzylic alcohols, aromatic aldehydes, or ketones as starting materials. Herein, the first convergent paired electrochemical approach to the direct hydroxylarylation of unactivated benzylic carbons (sp3/sp2/sp) is proposed. This protocol features direct functionalization of unactivated benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds and benzylic sp2/sp-carbons, mild conditions (open air, room temperature), an environmentally friendly procedure (without any external cat

Tuning the Coordination Microenvironment of Central Fe Active Site to Boost Water Electrolysis and Oxygen Reduction Activity.

In heterogeneous catalysis, single-atom catalysts are the frontier and important prototypes for many reactions, and revealing the intrinsic structure-activity relationship is presently a critical task, but remains challenging. In this work, water electrolysis and oxygen reduction performances of FeXYi N3 -i (X, Y = B, C, O, P and S; i = 0, 1) moiety in Fe-porphyrin are studied by the first-principles calculations, aiming at unraveling how and why tuning the coordination microenvironment of the active metal atom can improve the activity. It can be concluded that breaking the coordination shell

Reduced graphene oxide-nano zero value iron (rGO-nZVI) micro-electrolysis accelerating Cr(VI) removal in aquifer.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) assembled on graphene oxide (GO) (rGO-nZVI) composites were synthesized by reduction of GO and ferrous ions with potassium borohydride, for use in Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The results showed that the two-dimensional structure of GO could provide a skeleton support for Fe0, thus overcoming the bottleneck of aggregation for nZVI. Also, rGO-nZVI would form a ferric-carbon micro-electrolysis system in Cr(VI)-contaminated aquifers, enhancing and accelerating electron transfer, exhibiting high rate and capacity for Cr(VI) removal.
