Melatonin: a Potential Shield against Electromagnetic Waves.

Melatonin, a vital hormone synthesized by the pineal gland, has been implicated in various physiological functions and circadian rhythm regulation. Its role in the protection against the non-ionizing electromagnetic field (EMF), known to disrupt the body's oxidative/anti-oxidative balance, has been called into question due to inconsistent results observed across studies. This review provides the current knowledge on the interwoven relationship between melatonin, EMF, and oxidative stress. Based on synthesized evidence, we present a model that best describes the mechanisms underlying the protec

[Influence of the periodic field with constant and slowly changing frequency on movement of the DNA kink].

The movement of the kink in homogeneous polynucleotide chains of DNA under the influence of three kinds of an external periodic field--with constant, growing and decreasing frequencies is investigated in the work. Dependences of speed and coordinate of the kink from time have been found with the help of McLaughlin and Scott energetic method. Phase trajectories of the kink have been constructed. It has been shown that in the case of external action with constant frequency, the kink aspires to a limiting cycle; in the case of an external field with increasing frequency it tends to a stationary s

Exposure to GSM RF fields does not affect calcium homeostasis in human endothelial cells, rat pheocromocytoma cells or rat hippocampal neurons.

In the course of modern daily life, individuals are exposed to numerous sources of electromagnetic radiation that are not present in the natural environment. The strength of the electromagnetic fields from sources such as hairdryers, computer display units and other electrical devices is modest. However, in many home and office environments, individuals can experience perpetual exposure to an "electromagnetic smog", with occasional peaks of relatively high electromagnetic field intensity. This has led to concerns that such radiation can affect health. In particular, emissions from mobile phone

Glass-Blowing-Inspired Upcycling of Thermosetting Polymer to Neuron-Like Hierarchical Carbon for Microwave Absorption and Conversion.

Upgrading thermosetting polymer waste and harvesting unwanted electromagnetic energy are of great significance in solving environmental pollution and energy shortage problems. Herein, inspired by the glass-blowing art, a spontaneous, controllable, and scalable strategy is proposed to prepare hollow carbon materials by inner blowing and outside blocking. Specifically, hierarchically neuron-like hollow carbon materials (HCMSs) with various sizes are fabricated from melamine-formaldehyde sponge (MS) waste. Benefiting from the synergistic of the hollow "cell body" and the connected "protrusions" n

Electromagnetic field induced biological effects in humans.

Exposure to artificial radio frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has increased significantly in recent decades. Therefore, there is a growing scientific and social interest in its influence on health, even upon exposure significantly below the applicable standards. The intensity of electromagnetic radiation in human environment is increasing and currently reaches astronomical levels that had never before experienced on our planet. The most influential process of EMF impact on living organisms, is its direct tissue penetration. The current established standards of exposure to EMFs in Poland

[Information EHF-interactions in a system of live objects (human platelets)].

The molecular informational interaction has been first detected in a system that involves human platelets, exposed to electromagnetic EHF-fluctuations at frequencies of molecular spectra of radiation and absorption of nitric oxide (150.176-150.644 HHz), and native platelets. It has been established that the incubation of a native platelet rich plasma with a similar plasma, exposed to a 5-minute effect of electromagnetic EHF-fluctuations at frequencies of molecular spectra of radiation and absorption of nitric oxide at a mode of peak and frequent modulation of a signal under in vitro conditions

The potential damaging effects of light on the eye (Part II).

The electromagnetic spectrum consists of radiant energy that is classified according to specific wavelengths. Man is constantly exposed to a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly to radiation in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared regions. The tissues of the eye and skin are particularly sensitive to the non-ionizing wavelengths of radiant energy. Although both tissues possess endogenous protective mechanisms to minimize the effects of such exposure, problems still occur due to the absorption of radiation. The cornea, lens and retina have been shown to be susceptible to damag

Oxidative stress-mediated alterations on sperm parameters in male Wistar rats exposed to 3G mobile phone radiation.

In recent years, there has been significant increase in mobile phone users. With this, health concerns associated with the exposure to electromagnetic radiation are also increasing. Continuous exposure to electromagnetic (EM) radiation generated from mobile phone is one of the probable reasons behind increasing male infertility. EM radiations induce oxidative stress that leads to numerous changes in reproductive parameters. With this hypothesis, we studied the effect of 3G mobile phone radiations on the reproductive system of male Wistar rats. Adult rats were divided into two groups: control a

Therapeutic hyperthermia.

The term hyperthermia broadly refers to either an abnormally high fever or the treatment of a disease by the induction of fever. Its effect depends on the temperature and exposure time. The increasing number of applications and clinical trials at universities, clinics, and hospitals prove the feasibility and applicability of clinical therapeutic hyperthermia. This chapter aims to outline and discuss the means by which electromagnetic energy and other techniques can provide elevation of temperature within the human body. Because of the individual characteristic of each type of treatment, differ

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields in the light of Draper et al. 2005.

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields are produced wherever electricity is used; exposure is ubiquitous. Epidemiologic studies find an association between children living in homes with the highest magnetic fields and childhood leukemia, but bias is a possible alternative to a causal explanation. A new study, Draper et al., looks at residence close to high-voltage power lines, one source of exposure to such fields, and its design avoids any obvious bias. It finds elevated childhood leukemia rates, but extending too far from the power lines to be straightforwardly compatible with the exis

Electromagnetic Field Exposure Changes Due to the Digital Television Switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece.

In the present work, the changes in the exposure to electromagnetic fields due to television signals incurred by the digital switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece, are investigated. It is shown that the measured electric fields comply with ICNIRP guidelines but are higher than those in the reported literature for other countries. However, this may be attributed to the selection of measurement points. Moreover, it is shown that the median value of the power density dropped from 60 μW m during analog broadcasting to 13.3 μW m for digital television. This finding indicates that the digital switchove

The interaction between electromagnetic fields at megahertz, gigahertz and terahertz frequencies with cells, tissues and organisms: risks and potential.

Since regular radio broadcasts started in the 1920s, the exposure to human-made electromagnetic fields has steadily increased. These days we are not only exposed to radio waves but also other frequencies from a variety of sources, mainly from communication and security devices. Considering that nearly all biological systems interact with electromagnetic fields, understanding the affects is essential for safety and technological progress. This paper systematically reviews the role and effects of static and pulsed radio frequencies (100-109 Hz), millimetre waves (MMWs) or gigahertz (109-1011 Hz)

A novel radiation protection method for miniaturized MIMO mobile terminal antenna design based on metamaterials.

In this article, we propose an innovative approach to reduce radiation dose absorption inside human head tissues by shrinking the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terminal geometric area. Initially, we employ COMSOL software to design a MIMO mobile terminal antenna that meets 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G communication requirements. Through adding the decoupling unit, its geometric area reduces from 58 × 120 mm² to 44 × 80 mm², and its simulations and measurements indicate that the miniaturized MIMO mobile terminal antenna exhibits good radiation performance. Subsequently, we construct a head model
