We initiated a clinical and genetic linkage study on members of a large Venezuelan family with hereditary hearing loss. A medical history and a physical examination were performed on 30 family members. Audiometry was carried out in 25 subjects, and in 2 additional children auditory brainstem responses were obtained. Initial reports of the use of parenteral streptomycin for bilateral Meniere's disease (MD) have demonstrated success in reducing the vestibular symptoms and, in some patients, stabilizing hearing. We report the clinical and oculographic features in 240 patients with benign positional vertigo (BPV). In each case, after a rapid position change from the sitting to head-hanging position, a stereotyped torsional paroxysmal positional nystagmus was visually observed and recorded with electronystagmography (ENG). Studies of eye movement responses to harmonic acceleration in patients with acoustic neuromas and Meniere's disease have demonstrated left-right asymmetries and phase decrements.
