Co-culture techniques using fetal bovine uterine fibroblasts or bovine oviductal epithelial cells have improved embryonic development prior to replacement in humans. In initial co-culture trials, embryo development and implantation rates increased after just 1 day in culture. The most overt characteristics noted following co-culture were improved blastomere development and characteristics, reduced fragmentation, and the appearance of swollen blastomeres. In addition, an increase in the incidence of zona thickness variation was detected. Improved development of polyspermic and supernumerary emb

The mouse embryo bioassay (MEB) is a biologically relevant means of quality control (QC) in almost all modes of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Such QC tests are essential to guarantee that all procedures performed and media used are of adequate quality which would not compromise subsequent pregnancy rates. Although most reports on the use of the MEB for QC in ART laboratories refer to its use in the QC of other parameters such as contact materials, contaminants and environmental parameters of the culture conditions, these same bioassays have been also criticized as not being sensiti

Measurements were made of the long bones of the upper limbs (humerus, ulna, radius) of 58 aborted embryos and fetuses, developmental age from 8 to 14 weeks, crown-rump length (CRL) between 38 and 116 mm. The specimens were cleared and double-stained, using alcian blue and alizarin red S for a differential detection of cartilage and bone. The values of both the total length (TL) and the ossified part (OL) of each long bone were related to the fetal developmental age previously estimated by freshly measured CRL. The relationship to another developmental pattern, i.e. the number of ossified centr

We studied the topography of the elbow region with special regard to the ulnar nerve during fetal life. Plastinated 600 microns thick sections through the right and left arms of ten fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) of 105 to 360 mm and of a newborn infant were investigated. The ulnar groove does not appear on the dorsal side of the medial humeral epicondyle earlier than at a crown-rump length of 130 mm. It provides the entrance into a formerly described fibro-osseous tunnel called the cubital tunnel. Its floor is formed by the posterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament, which bulg

We report on a fetus with alobar holoprosencephaly, microphthalmia, midline cleft lip and palate, absent nose, dysplastic ears, radial defects, pentalogy of Fallot, unilateral renal aplasia, absent gallbladder, vertebral anomalies, and absence of ribs. The father had a cleft palate, bilateral colobomas of the iris and retina, a bifid uvula, vertebral anomalies, and unilateral congenital hearing loss. His sister had a cleft lip. On the basis of this family and the family reported by Steinfeld [1982], this malformation syndrome can be defined as a rare autosomal dominant syndrome whose main comp

It is difficult to draw sweeping general conclusions about the blastogenesis of CT, principally because so few thoroughly studied cases are reported. It is to be hoped that methods such as painstaking gross or electronic dissection will increase the number of well-documented cases. Nevertheless, the following conclusions can be proposed: 1. Most CT can be classified into a few main anatomic types (or paradigms), and there are also rare transitional types that show gradation between the main types. 2. Most CT have two full notochordal axes (Fig. 5); the ventral organs induced along these axes m

This review summarises comparative aspects of equine pregnancy and birth. The allantochorion covers the entire endometrial surface of the mare's uterus and the placenta is microcotyledonary and epitheliochorial in structure. The foetus has, therefore, to pass through the allantochorion at birth. The umbilical cord has amniotic and allantoic portions and remains intact after delivery, enabling an arterial venous circulation to be maintained for several minutes. Maternal IgG does not cross the placental barrier and passive transfer post-natally is essential for immune status. Gestation in Thorou

This is a brief review of current information dealing with the impact of maternal exercise on the well-being of the human embryo and fetus. It discusses the theoretical concerns and exercise variables involved in the interaction between exercise and fetal health and focuses on five areas of fetal health where some information is available describing the interaction in the human. These include embryonic development, fetoplacental growth, prematurity, indices of fetal stress/distress, and condition during labor and at birth. It concludes that well-conditioned women who continue a regular running

The origin of growth cartilages in the neural arch of human fetal vertebrae was investigated in an attempt to resolve the conflicting opinion on ossification in this region. Serial sections of developing vertebrae were examined, and three growth cartilages for each half of the neural arch were found. They have their origin from a single center of ossification. Endochondral bone formation similar to ossification in the diaphysis of a long bone occurs in the neural arch. This information may help in the understanding of how vertebral malformations such as scoliosis and spondylolysis occur during

Abnormalities of cranial size and configuration include macrocephaly, microcephaly and dysmorphic skull. Hydrocephalus, mega-encephalus, abnormal growth of skull bones and chronic subdural and epidural collections are among the most important causes of macrocephaly. Primary microcephaly may be due to deficient neuronal proliferation or abnormalities in neural tube segmentation or cellular migration. Secondary microcephaly may be caused by prenatal, perinatal or early postnatal insults like infections, drugs, radiation, hypoxia, among others. Abnormal cranial forms may be sporadic or secondary

Any unrecognized or ill-controlled hypoparathyroidism, during pregnancy, may result in often severe fetal and neo-natal complications. Maintaining an accurate calcium-phosphorus balance is absolutely necessary to a good pregnancy in a woman with hypoparathyroidism. Alterations of the calcium-phosphorus metabolism, during pregnancy, make it more difficult to treat hypoparathyroidism. The treatment is based, essentially, on an appropriate vitamin D intake, with regular monitoring of the calcemia.

The intent of this article is to present a detailed overview of the normal prenatal and postnatal development and growth of the lower limb with special emphasis on the ankle-foot complex. The effects of physiologic load and its components of duration, timing, and direction are discussed. The results of abnormal amount, timing, duration, or direction of load on the prenatal and postnatal human are discussed with examples of foot deformity provided for clarification. Principles of therapeutic force application for the reversal of deformity are formulated.

Conjoined twins show varying degree of conjoining in either facing or side-by-side fashion. Cephalothoracopagus janiceps is a prototype of facing anomaly in which the two bodies demonstrated a cross symmetry to the midline, that is axial symmetry. Interfacial and intersternal lines crossed at a right angle and no abnormality of situs was associated. Dicephalus dipus dibrachius is a case of side-by-side union, in which the bodies facing nearly the same direction were symmetrical to the middle sagittal plane. Abnormal situs of one was always associated. Other types of conjoined twins as thoracop

With the increasing use of ultrasound examination in the antenatal period the lack of morphological correlates has become a problem. This study was carried out in order to correct this deficiency. An antenatal real-time ultrasound scan of the fetal head was performed and measurements of the biparietal diameter, occipitofrontal diameter, head circumference and cerebral ventricle-to-hemisphere ratio were undertaken in 103 fetuses at 13-24 weeks gestation. After prostaglandin termination of pregnancy, the fetal brains were perfused in situ through the right carotid artery with 10% formal saline.

Human germ cells are the foundation of human reproduction and development, ensuring heredity and contributing to genetic diversity. Accordingly, their anomalies lead to critical diseases, including infertility. Recent advances in genomics and stem cell-based in vitro gametogenesis research have expanded our knowledge of how human germ cells are specified and differentiate during embryonic and fetal development, elucidating evolutionarily distinctive as well as conserved properties of human germ cell development. Here, based on the evidence from both in vivo and in vitro studies, we provide an

BACKGROUND: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely studied for biomedical applications, although their safety and potential toxicity in pregnancy remains unknown. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of AuNPs maternal exposure at different gestational ages on fetal survival and development, as well as the potential mechanism of AuNPs affecting embryos and fetuses.
METHODS: Thirty nm polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated AuNPs (A30) were administered to pregnant mice via intravenous injection (5 μg Au/g body weight) over three days at either early or late pregnancy. Fetal abortion ra

The paratesticular region includes the testicular collecting system, the testicular tunics, and spermatic cord. For the purpose of discussion in this issue, the rete testis is also considered part of the paratestis, although it is principally intratesticular in location. The embryologic origins of the paratesticular components and their detailed anatomic and histologic features are presented to provide a background to better understand the pathologic processes affecting the paratestis. A wide variety of cysts, hyperplasias, neoplasms, and tumor-like conditions may affect the paratesticular reg

The regulatory effect of the periosteum on the growth of the mandibular condylar process has previously been investigated by relieving the periosteal tension, e.g. by dividing the periosteum, but no unanimous conclusion has been reached. In the present investigation, a different experimental design was applied in that the growth of the condylar process was observed following a provoked periosteal damage. Using 15-day-old rats, the mandibular ramus on the right side was exposed, and the periosteum subjacent to the condylar cartilage was frozen by a cryotechnique. Controls were treated similarly
