Associations among executive function, social functioning, emotional states, and eating behavior patterns in young adults.

Eating behavior patterns are influenced by multiple neurocognitive processes, including executive, emotional, and social functioning. However, their relative associations, particularly among healthy individuals without eating disorders, remain unclear. This study investigated the relationships between eating behavior patterns and executive function, social functioning, and emotional states in young adults. This cross-sectional study included 101 healthy young adults aged 20-30 years, recruited from a student population between March 2025 and July 2025. Eating behavior patterns, executive funct

Worry wart: A preregistered, experimental investigation of worry-induced emotional eating and associated psychological characteristics.

Perseverative cognition (e.g., worry, rumination) is cross-sectionally associated with disordered eating behaviors and negative affect; yet little research has examined its causal role in emotional eating (EE). The current preregistered experimental study tested the influence of one type of perseverative cognition-worry-on objectively measured food consumption in the laboratory. A total of 129 undergraduate students (67.4 % cisgender women, AgeM = 19.87) were screened via a semi-structured diagnostic interview and randomly assigned to either a worry induction or control condition. Alexithymia, dissociation and emotional regulation in eating disorders: Evidence of improvement through specialized inpatient treatment.

The research into emotional regulation in eating disorders (EDs) has shown specific impairments and maladaptive coping strategies in patients, and there is an increasing interest in the role of the emotional domain in the treatment outcome. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a specialized inpatient treatment characterized by both an intensive and comprehensive standardized multidisciplinary programme based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and a flexible and personalized component implemented by third-wave interventions. A cohort of 67 female ED patients (anorexia nervosa = 28, bulimia n

Unique associations between young adult men's emotional functioning and their body dissatisfaction and disordered eating.

Research on emotional functioning, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating in males is predominated by studies of negative affect and emotion regulation. Other aspects of emotional functioning, namely emotion recognition and attentional biases toward emotional stimuli, have received little empirical attention. The present study investigated the unique associations between different aspects of men's emotional functioning and their disordered eating attitudes, muscularity dissatisfaction, and body fat dissatisfaction. Results from 132 male undergraduates showed that muscularity dissatisfacti

Eating seizures and emotional facial paresis: evidence suggesting the amygdala is a common anatomophysiological substratum.

The medial basotemporal lobes (hippocampus, amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus) are considered to be parts of the system responsible for nonvolitional facial movements. In patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, lower facial weakness during emotional expression has been found to occur almost exclusively contralateral to the temporal lobe with the epileptogenic focus. Repetitive and chronic stimulation of the amygdala during eating has also been postulated as a probable mechanism for eating seizures. The authors present the illustrative aspects of both facial asymmetry and eating seizures in a case

Exploring the Association Between Childhood Emotional Maltreatment and Eating Disorder Symptoms During Pregnancy: A Moderated Mediation Model with Prenatal Emotional Distress and Social Support.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy is a critical period marked by significant transformations that can trigger or exacerbate eating disorder symptoms. Childhood emotional maltreatment, including abuse and neglect, is a known risk factor for disordered eating, yet its specific impact during pregnancy remains unexplored. For this reason, this study aimed to examine the link between childhood emotional maltreatment and eating disorder symptoms in pregnant women, also focusing on the potential mediating and moderating variables involved in this association. Specifically, this study explored the medi

The mind-eat program leads to greater improvements in mindful, emotional, and external eating compared to intuitive eating-oriented education in adults with overweight or obesity: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mindful eating interventions target behavioral and emotional processes involved in eating, but most structured programs have been evaluated in English-speaking settings and often compared with passive controls. This randomized controlled trial assessed the effectiveness of the Mind-Eat program, a structured mindfulness-based intervention, versus treatment as usual consisting of a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program grounded in intuitive eating principles, in adults with overweight or obesity. METHODS: In this single-center trial, 66 adults with overweight or obesity were r

Trajectories and predictors of maternal eating behaviors across the first year postpartum: The role of women's childhood trauma in emotional, external and restraint eating.

The first year postpartum is a sensitive time for maternal eating behaviors including emotional, external and restrained eating, which have all been associated with negative health outcomes. Furthermore, among women with a history of trauma, the stress of the postpartum period and early parenting may replicate feelings of helplessness and overwhelm experienced during childhood trauma, which may further contribute to these eating behaviors. Although evidence has shown how mothers eat during this time has long-term implications for infants' eating and health, limited research has characterized e

Exploring Prospective Relationships of Emotion Regulation Difficulties With Eating Disorder Psychopathology and Eating-Related Psychosocial Impairment Among Older Adults in China.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are a robust risk factor for eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. As symptoms are often overlooked or misattributed to ageing, these associations are unclear in older adults. This study investigated the longitudinal relationships between ER difficulties, ED psychopathology (e.g., thinness-oriented ED psychopathology and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder [ARFID] symptoms), and eating-related psychosocial impairment among Chinese older adults. METHOD: An online sample of 551 Chinese adults aged 56-78 provided data at baseline (T1), and 20

Parental responsiveness, demandingness, and emotional eating among Chinese college students: the mediating role of interpersonal trust.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional, online self-report study examined the associations between parenting styles and emotional eating among Chinese college students, with a specific focus on the mediating role of interpersonal trust. Emotional eating-a maladaptive strategy for coping with negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, and sadness-has been linked to psychological distress and adverse physical health outcomes. Guided by a health psychology perspective, we investigated how two core parenting dimensions, responsiveness and demandingness, relate to emotional eating, both directly and indi

Is emotional eating selectively associated with sleep-related problems in adolescents? Results from the EHDLA study.

UNLABELLED: During adolescence, sleep disturbances and emotionally driven eating patterns frequently coexist, potentially sharing underlying psychological mechanisms. However, their specific relationship in this population has not been fully clarified. This study explored the association between emotional eating and different sleep-related difficulties among Spanish adolescents. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 837 participants between 12 and 17 years old from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. Sleep-related difficulties were evaluated using the bedtime is

Predictors of orthorexia nervosa in women: eating attitudes, emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, depression and self-esteem.

Although orthorexia nervosa, defined as excessive preoccupation with healthy food consumption, is not yet included as a disease in current classification systems (DSM-5, ICD-10), it is a psychopathology that is attracting increasing attention with a growing number of studies on the subject. The aim of this study was to examine the predictors of eating attitudes, emotion dysregulation, depression, anxiety and self-esteem in orthorexia nervosa, which are considered in the literature to be related to orthorexia nervosa. Data were collected using Eating Attitude Short Form, Difficulties in Emotion

Prevalence and Predictors of Emotional Eating among Healthy Young Saudi Women during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Emotional eating (EE) is prevalent among women and is associated with obesity. The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and mandatory quarantine increased the risk of mental symptoms and, inferentially, emotional eating (EE). We investigated the EE prevalence and predictors during this pandemic. Overall, 638 women, ages 18-39, completed an online survey incorporating the Emotional Eating Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. We asked about nutrition and col

Emotional Eating Phenotype is Associated with Central Dopamine D2 Receptor Binding Independent of Body Mass Index.

PET studies have provided mixed evidence regarding central D2/D3 dopamine receptor binding and its relationship with obesity as measured by body mass index (BMI). Other aspects of obesity may be more tightly coupled to the dopaminergic system. We characterized obesity-associated behaviors and determined if these related to central D2 receptor (D2R) specific binding independent of BMI. Twenty-two obese and 17 normal-weight participants completed eating- and reward-related questionnaires and underwent PET scans using the D2R-selective and nondisplaceable radioligand (N-[(11)C]methyl)benperidol.

Emotional eating, rather than lifestyle behavior, drives weight gain in a prospective study in 1562 employees.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between the lifestyle factors-sports, alcohol, nutrition, overweight, and smoking, the eating styles of dietary restraint, external eating, and emotional eating on the one hand, and the change in body mass index (BMI) on the other hand. METHODS: Using a Web-based lifestyle questionnaire, responses were obtained from 1562 employees. RESULTS: We found a consistent main effect of emotional eating and doing sports on change in BMI. High emotional eating was related to weight gain, whereas a high level of sporting was related to weight loss. Restrained eatin

Impaired psychosocial functioning and emotion regulation difficulties in eating disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe mental disorders marked by disturbed eating and body-related concerns, leading to significant distress and impairment. However, psychosocial functioning in ED diagnoses remains understudied. Emotion dysregulation is a central feature of EDs, linked to their development and severity, and is known to predict functional impairment in other mental disorders. However, its role in psychosocial functioning in EDs remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare psychosocial functioning across ED diagnoses, identify subgroups based on emotion d

Bridging appetite and emotional dynamics: the oxytocinergic system as a therapeutic axis in feeding and eating disorders.

Feeding and eating disorders represent some of the most devastating and paradoxical conditions in medicine, where the biological drive to survive collides with altered motivation, affect, and reward. Although neurobiological and metabolic research has substantially advanced our understanding of feeding and eating disorders, mechanism-driven therapeutic options remain limited. The oxytocinergic network has gained increasing attention for its dual capacity to regulate energy balance and socio-emotional processing. In this review, we systematically integrate preclinical and clinical evidence to p
