AIMS OF THE STUDY: Lung transplantation is an established therapy in selected patients with advanced cystic fibrosis lung disease. Resumption of employment after lung transplantation is generally supported. In Switzerland, there are no data on long-term employment in people with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation.
METHODS: In a single-centre, cross-sectional study at a Swiss university hospital, clinical data from lung transplant recipients with cystic fibrosis, covering the transplantation period from January 1996 to December 2016, were analysed retrospectively. The potential in

BACKGROUND: Enabling people with severe mental illness to sustain employment remains a challenge. This is despite most wishing to be employed, and the development of effective vocational interventions and employment supports for this population. To better understand how to enable their sustained involvement in the workforce, this review sought to identify, analyse and summarise studies investigating the factors that impact the job tenure of workers with severe mental illness, irrespective of the type of employment support they received.
METHODS: An integrative literature review approach was e

Title I of the Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination in employment; however, 26 years later, employment rates for persons with disabilities hover at 34%. This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions to increase employment for people with various disabilities. Forty-six articles met the inclusion criteria for evidence-based interventions. The majority of studies assessed interventions for persons with mental health disabilities. Strong evidence was found for ongoing support and work-related social skills training prior to and during co

BACKGROUND: Return-to-work (RTW) resources for persons with mental health disorders are limited and costs are typically shared by several stakeholders in society. Occupational therapists (OT) provide RTW interventions for this target group, however, increased knowledge of health, and employment effects, as well as costs are needed to better inform decision makers in their prioritisations.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To identify and summarise evidence of cost-effectiveness of RTW interventions for persons with mental health disorders which OTs provide.

Employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities (DD) have improved in the last several decades. There is increasing focus on helping people with DD sample more diverse employment options, including running their own businesses. The present study (1) evaluated the effects of a well-established behavioral teaching procedure on the acquisition of a sample of three broad classes of skills related to self-employment (worker, supervisor, and clerical work) in young adults with DD within an analog recycling business, and (2) investigated the extension of that treatment to the natu

Although medical care for spinal cord injury (SCI) has progressed substantially over recent decades, Arabic-speaking countries still confront major challenges in facilitating meaningful employment and social integration for persons with SCI. This narrative review analyzed manuscripts addressing employment and social integration outcomes for individuals with SCI across Arabic-speaking countries published between 1997 and 2025. We searched PubMed, Embase, and regional databases using terms related to SCI, employment, rehabilitation, and Arabic-speaking countries. Our analysis reveals persistent

BACKGROUND: Studies show that female immigrants tend to struggle to establish themselves in the working life in a new society. Since previous research has primarily focused on barriers to integration, there is a need for more studies that encompass aspects that make integration toward employment possible for women.
PURPOSE: This integrative literature review aimed to explore peer-reviewed research on facilitating aspects for immigrant women in their process of integrating into working life.
METHODS: An integrative literature review yielded 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and

OBJECTIVE: Norway is a high-income and high-cost society with a generous welfare system, and it has the largest mental health-related unemployment gap of the OECD countries. The aim of the current article was to present a short history of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) services to increase work participation in Norway.
METHOD: We provide a narrative overview of the developments and research on IPS in Norway, from the introduction of supported employment to recent and ongoing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effectiveness of IPS for various target groups.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review was to describe the evidence for the effectiveness of early intervention to improve and maintain performance in occupations for youths with or at risk for serious mental illness (SMI).
METHOD: Titles and abstracts of 670 articles were reviewed, 234 were retrieved for full review, and 30 met inclusion criteria.

BACKGROUND: Employment improves mental health and well-being by providing financial security, daily structure, a sense of identity and purpose, and social engagement. However, securing and sustaining employment is exceptionally challenging for vulnerable populations who experience persistent and multiple barriers, such as mental illness, homelessness, food and housing insecurity, and marginalization. Evidence-based supported employment programs, most notably individual placement and support (IPS) are becoming a more common approach for addressing the needs of these high-risk individuals. The a

PURPOSE: To identify implications from studies investigating the employment-related views of people with persistent mental ill-health to guide the further development of employment supports available to this group.
METHODS: Published qualitative studies between 1998 and 2008 were searched, resulting in 20 studies for qualitative metasynthesis.
FINDINGS: Four themes were synthesized from the findings:(a) employment has varied meanings, benefits, an

BACKGROUND: Productivity-based wage systems are intended to enhance the labour market participation of people with disabilities. Limited scholarship exists regarding the impact of such policies in practice. This qualitative study explored stakeholder perspectives on the Australian Supported Wage System (SWS), including perceptions of fairness and equity.
METHODS: Document review provided context and background for the study. 14 semi-structured interviews were subsequently conducted with a range of stakeholders with knowledge of the SWS.
RESULTS: Four primary themes were identified, related t

BACKGROUND: Supporting people with substance use disorder to work has become a key policy objective internationally. Meanwhile, interventions, such as Individual Placement and Support (IPS), have evolved to facilitate this. This article utilises the concept of emotional labour to explore the feelings and emotions experienced by people receiving treatment for alcohol and other drugs (AOD) who engaged with IPS and secured paid work.
METHODS: Data were generated (January 2024 to August 2025) during a mixed methods evaluation of IPS in community AOD services across England. Forty-eight new IPS cl

Down syndrome is the most prevalent genetic condition contributing to intellectual disability. Advancements in medical care have significantly increased the life expectancy of people with this condition, making employment a vital component for independent living and quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the current literature on the employability and employment experiences of individuals with Down syndrome, focusing on the evolution of the employment rate and factors influencing employment such as cognitive and personal factors, societal attitudes, challenges, and effective sup
