Intraduodenal protein modulates antropyloroduodenal motility, hormone release, glycemia, appetite, and energy intake in lean men.

BACKGROUND: Intraduodenal fat and carbohydrate modulate antropyloroduodenal motility and hormone release and suppress appetite and energy intake in a load-dependent manner. Protein also suppresses energy intake, but its effects on these gastrointestinal factors and their role in the appetite-suppressive effects of protein remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize the effects of different intraduodenal protein loads on antropyloroduodenal pressures, gastrointestinal hormone release, glucose and insulin concentrations, appetite perceptions, and energy intake. DESIGN: Sixteen lean, he

Transection of the glossopharyngeal nerve reduces energy and sugar intake but does not affect fat intake or meal patterns in rats offered a palatable cafeteria diet.

Taste information is transmitted to the brain via branches of cranial nerves VII (chorda tympani, CT, and greater superficial petrosal, GSP), IX (glossopharyngeal, GL), and X (superior laryngeal branch of the vagus) with each nerve innervating relatively segregated fields of taste buds on the tongue, palate, and laryngeal epithelium. Approximately 70% of taste buds reside on the tongue and are innervated by the CT or GL. Previously we found that rats offered a 5-choice cafeteria diet after combined transection of the CT and GL (2NX) ate more fat, less sugar, and larger, but fewer meals each da

Acute effects of oral preloads with increasing energy density on gastric emptying, gut hormone release, thermogenesis and energy intake, in overweight and obese men.

This study investigated the effect of high- and low-energy density preloads on gastrointestinal and metabolic factors, which act to regulate acute energy intake. Sixteen overweight and obese men (BMI range: 27.2-36.5 kg/m2) each received 3 oral preloads in randomised order: i) high-energy-density, high-fat (1.5 kcal/g), ii) low-energy density, high-fat (1.1 kcal/g), and iii) low-energy-density, high-protein (1.1 kcal/g). Over 180 min, gastric emptying, plasma glucagon-like peptide-1 concentrations, and diet-induced thermogenesis were assessed, and subsequent energy intake was determined. Total

Energy intake insufficiency due to underestimated energy requirement by common predictive formulas can be identified by urinary amino acid levels in advanced heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Elevated resting energy expenditure (REE) promotes cachexia, worsening prognosis in patients with advanced heart failure (HF). However, adequate assessment of energy balance is challenging because of unvalidated common prediction methods and unestablished determinants of REE, resulting in a lack of biomarkers for predicting insufficient energy intake. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate REE in patients with advanced HF and explore biomarkers for insufficient energy intake. METHODS: We measured REE by indirect calorimetry and calculated the total energy expendi

Association of resting energy expenditure-based energy intake sufficiency with functional recovery, dysphagia, and 1-year mortality following heart failure: A prospective observational study.

AIM: Evidence for the influence of resting energy expenditure (REE)-based energy intake on the outcomes of patients with heart failure (HF) is scarce. This study evaluates the relationship between REE-based energy intake sufficiency and clinical outcomes in hospitalized HF patients. METHODS: This prospective observational study included newly admitted patients with acute HF. REE was measured using indirect calorimetry at baseline and total energy consumption (TEE) was calculated by multiplying REE with activity index. Energy intake (EI) was recorded, and the patients were classified into two

Whey protein isolate counteracts the effects of a high-fat diet on energy intake and hypothalamic and adipose tissue expression of energy balance-related genes.

The intake of whey protein isolate (WPI) is known to reduce high-fat diet (HFD)-induced body-weight gain and adiposity. However, the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. To this end, we fed C57BL/6J mice for 8 weeks with diets containing 10 % energy as fat (low-fat diet, LFD) or 45 % energy as fat (HFD) enriched with either 20 % energy as casein (LFD and HFD) or WPI (high-fat WPI). Metabolic parameters and the hypothalamic and epididymal adipose tissue expression of energy balance-related genes were investigated. The HFD increased fat mass and plasma leptin levels and decreased the d

Beverage Consumption Patterns, Beverage-Derived Energy Intake, and Adherence to Fluid Intake Recommendations Among Polish Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the BEVQ-PL Questionnaire.

Background/Objectives: Different organizations have established fluid intake recommendations for adolescents; however, studies assessing adherence typically rely on a single reference system, limiting comparisons across populations. This study assessed beverage consumption patterns and beverage-derived energy intake among Polish adolescents and examined how adherence estimates differed when recommendations issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the Polish National Institute of Public Health-National Institute of Hygiene (NIH) were applied. Association between protein and energy intake during acute phase and sepsis outcomes: a retrospective cohort study.

This study investigated the relationship between protein and energy intake during the early (days 1-2) and late (days 3-7) acute phase and prognosis in septic patients with nutritional risk screening 2002 ≥ 3. Cox regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with 28-day mortality. Among 293 shock patients, higher energy intake in days 3-7 was signifcantly associated with lower 28-day mortality (hazard ratio, 0.969; 95% confidence interval, 0.942-0.997; P = 0.033). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed achieving 75% of energy target in days 3-7 correlated with decreased 28-day mortal

Impaired adaptation of energy intake induces severe obesity in aged mice on a high-fat diet.

High-fat diet (HFD) feeding induces inflammation in various tissues, including the nodose ganglion and hypothalamus, resulting in obesity and metabolic disorders. In this study, we investigated the effect of short-term HFD on aged and young mice. Aged mice easily gained weight during short-term HFD feeding, and required many days to adapt their energy intake. One-day HFD in aged mice induced inflammation in the distal colon, but not in the nodose ganglion or hypothalamus. The anorexic effect of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) was attenuated in aged mice. Intraperitoneal administration of GLP-1

An Intraperitoneal Treatment with Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) Regulates Appetite, Energy Intake/Expenditure, and Metabolism.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a 37-amino acid neuropeptide expressed both centrally and peripherally. CGRP has been shown to be involved in arteriolar dilation, cardiovascular regulation, pain transmission, migraine, and gastrointestinal physiology. Our current research is aimed at analyzing CGRP's impact on appetite/satiety, body metabolism, and energy homeostasis. Our study investigated the effects of a single-dose intraperitoneal (IP) treatment with CGRP on food and water consumption, energy expenditure, physical activity, respirometry, and a panel of plasma metabolic hormones i

Weight-sparing effect of insulin detemir: a consequence of central nervous system-mediated reduced energy intake?

Insulin therapy is often associated with adverse weight gain. This is attributable, at least in part, to changes in energy balance and insulin's anabolic effects. Adverse weight gain increases the risk of poor macrovascular outcomes in people with diabetes and should therefore be mitigated if possible. Clinical studies have shown that insulin detemir, a basal insulin analogue, exerts a unique weight-sparing effect compared with other basal insulins. To understand this property, several hypotheses have been proposed. These explore the interplay of efferent and afferent signals between the muscl

Validity of energy intake estimated by digital photography plus recall in overweight and obese young adults.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have questioned the adequacy of self-report measures of dietary intake as the basis for scientific conclusions regarding the associations of dietary intake and health, and reports have recommended the development and evaluation of better methods for the assessment of dietary intake in free-living individuals. We developed a procedure that used pre- and post-meal digital photographs in combination with dietary recalls (DP+R) to assess energy intake during ad libitum eating in a cafeteria setting. OBJECTIVE: To compare mean daily energy intake of overweight and obese

What Is Driving Energy Intake during Weight Loss? A Longitudinal Mediation Analysis in Adolescents with Obesity.

BACKGROUND: It has been posited that fat and lean tissues have a direct role in driving energy intake after significant weight loss, but this has yet to be demonstrated in adolescents with obesity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to elucidate the changes in direct and indirect associations between body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and energy intake (EI) during weight loss after a multidisciplinary intervention in adolescents with obesity. METHOD: This was a secondary analysis of 26 adolescents with obesity (age: 14.1 ± 1.6 y; BMI z-score: 2.8 ± 0.8; 14 females) enrolled i

N-Acetyltaurine induces an IRX2-GDF15 endocrine response that suppresses high-fat diet-induced energy intake.

N-acetyltaurine (NAT) is a taurine-derived metabolite that has recently been linked to feeding behavior and body-weight regulation. Although NAT has been shown to lower body weight through GFRAL-dependent signaling, the tissue source and upstream regulatory mechanism responsible for NAT-induced GDF15 production remain incompletely defined. Here we show that NAT administration suppressed food intake, limited early HFD-induced weight gain and adipose tissue expansion, and attenuated lipid accumulation in skeletal muscle and liver. These effects were accompanied by increased circulating GDF15. Ge

Gastrointestinal and sensory manifestations, nutrition management, and energy-protein intake in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal and sensory manifestations (GSMs) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may affect food intake, resulting in malnutrition and poor outcomes. We characterized the impact of GSMs and oral nutrition supplementation on energy-protein intake (EPI) and hospital discharge in adult patients with COVID-19. METHODS: Patients from two hospitals were enrolled (n = 357). We recorded the presence and type of GSM at admission, estimated energy requirements (EER) and the EPI based on regular food intake (plate diagram sheets) during hospital stays. Chronic REM sleep restriction in young rats increases energy expenditure with no change in food intake.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What are the effects of different periods of REM sleep restriction (7, 14 and 21 days) on metabolic parameters in young rats? What is the main finding and its importance? Animals submitted to each period of REM sleep deprivation showed a negative energy balance, with reduced body weight gain, body energy gain and gross food efficiency, less body fat content, and increased energy expenditure. There was no increase in food intake after any of the REM sleep restriction periods. In young rats, negative energy balance is not compensated by i
