BACKGROUND/AIM: In carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT), a low dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) within the tumor has been suggested as a potential unfavorable prognostic factor for local recurrence. However, inter-fractional variations in LETd during daily CIRT sessions remain unelucidated. This study aimed to investigate inter-fractional variations in LETd profiles during CIRT for pancreatic cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer treated with CIRT were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment plans delivering 55.2 Gy (relative biological effectiv

Most artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) are built from predefined donor-acceptor combinations, making their energy transfer and emission difficult to alter after assembly. Combining reversible reconfiguration with efficient sequential energy transfer remains challenging. Herein, we report reconfigurable Ir(III) complex-based co-assemblies for sequential energy transfer and programmable luminescence. In H2O/CH3CN with a 90% water content, Ir-D self-assembles into blue-phosphorescent nanorods. Co-assembly of Ir-D with erythrosine Y (A1) or Nile red (A2) enables one-step energy transfer,

Organic materials with red persistent phosphorescence hold immense promise for biotechnology due to their excellent tissue permeability and high signal-to-background ratios. However, inefficient spin-orbit coupling, high triplet susceptibility, and narrow energy gapspromoted nonradiative deactivations, pose a formidable obstacle to achieving efficient red phosphorescence. This study addresses these challenges by introducing xanthone (Xan)-based host-guest systems. Utilizing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as guests, efficient red to near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescent materials with ultralong

Substituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) are increasingly recognized as valuable sp3-rich bioisosteres for ortho- or meta-disubstituted benzene rings, offering improved pharmacokinetic properties and broad utility in drug discovery. Herein, we report an energy-transfer-enabled strategy for the synthesis of 2-substituted BCPs via strain-release triplet carbene addition to bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs). This method employs readily accessible diazoacetates and a diverse set of BCBs under mild blue-light irradiation, providing direct access to 1,2,3-trisubstituted BCPs. Key advantages include the

Europium-based metal-organic frameworks offer a unique platform for photoluminescent materials due to the tunable ligand structures and the inherent properties of lanthanides. However, their practical applications are limited by low luminescence efficiency due to inefficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer (LMET). Herein, we introduce a pressure-induced hydrogen bond enhancement strategy to promote the LMET process, triggering the bright red light behavior in the initially weakly emitting Eu(BTC)(H2O)6 (H3BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). As the pressure approaches 9.2 GPa, the photolumi

Epithelial cadherin (E-cad) mediated cell-cell junctions play a crucial role in the establishment and maintenance of tissues and organs. In this study, we employed metal-induced energy transfer imaging and spectroscopy to investigate variations in intermembrane distance during adhesion between two model membranes adorned with E-cad. By correlating the measured intermembrane distances with the distinct E-cad junction states, we probed the dynamic behavior and diversity of E-cad junctions across different binding pathways. Our observations led to the identification of a transient intermediate st

This work extends the theory of coherent resonance energy transfer [S. Jang, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 164101 (2009)] by including quantum mechanical inelastic effects due to modulation of donor-acceptor electronic coupling. Within the approach of the second order time local quantum master equation (QME) in the polaron picture and under the assumption that the bath degrees of freedom modulating the electronic coupling are independent of other modes, a general time evolution equation for the reduced system density operator is derived. Detailed expressions for the relaxation operators and inhomogeneou

The influence of temperature and applied magnetic fields on photoluminescence (PL) emission and electronic energy transfer (ET) of both isolated and aggregated CdSe nanocrystals was investigated. Following 400-nm excitation, temperature-dependent, intensity-integrated and energy-resolved PL measurements were used to quantify the emission wavelength and amplitude of isolated CdSe nanocrystals. The results indicated an approximately three-fold increase in PL intensity upon decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 6 K; this was attributed to a reduction of charge carrier access to nanocrystal sur

Despite the initial effectiveness of oncogene-directed cancer therapeutics, acquired drug resistance remains the ultimate "Achilles' heel" for long-term durable remission in cancer patients. Acquisition of drug resistance is not more evident elsewhere than in the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, imatinib and dasatinib, for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Hence, even though imatinib initially produces remission in the chronic phase, ultimately these therapeutics fail via the emergence of drug resistance, in which chronic myelogenous leukemia could inevitably progress to a terminal

The paper describes the development and characterization of analytical properties of quantum dot-based probes for enzymatic activity and for screening enzyme inhibitors. The luminescent probes are based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between luminescent quantum dots that serve as donors and rhodamine acceptors that are immobilized to the surface of the quantum dots through peptide linkers. Peptide-coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots were prepared using a one-step ligand exchange process in which RGDC peptide molecules replace trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) molecules as the capping l

The temporal and spatial control of Rho GTPase signaling pathways is a central issue in understanding the molecular mechanisms that generate complex cellular movements. The Rho protein Cdc42 induces a significant conformational change in its downstream effector, the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP). On the basis of this conformational change, we have created a series of single-molecule sensors for both active Cdc42 and Cdc42 guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) that utilize fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between cyan and yellow fluorescent proteins. In vitro, the Cd

Selective modulators of gamma-aminobutyric acid, type A (GABA(A)) receptors containing alpha(4) subunits may provide new treatments for epilepsy and premenstrual syndrome. Using mouse L(-tk) cells, we stably expressed the native GABA(A) receptor subunit combinations alpha(3)beta(3)gamma(2,) alpha(4)beta(3)gamma(2), and, for the first time, alpha(4)beta(3)delta and characterized their properties using a novel fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay of GABA-evoked depolarizations. GABA evoked concentration-dependent decreases in fluorescence resonance energy transfer that were blocked by GA

Mechanistic understanding and rational design of complex chemical systems depend on fast and accurate predictions of electronic structures beyond individual building blocks. However, if the system exceeds hundreds of atoms, first-principles quantum mechanical (QM) modeling becomes impractical. In this study, we developed FB-GNN-MBE by integrating a fragment-based graph neural network (FB-GNN) into the many-body expansion (MBE) theory and demonstrated its capacity to reproduce first-principles potential energy surfaces for hierarchically structured systems with manageable accuracy, complexity,

The quenching of excited triplet states of sufficient energy by O2 leads to O2(1sigma(g)+) and O2(1delta(g)) singlet oxygen and O2(3sigma(g)-) ground-state oxygen as well. The present work investigates the question whether in the absence of charge transfer (CT) interactions between triplet sensitizer and O2 the rate constants of formation of the three different O2 product states follow a generally valid energy gap law. For that purpose, lifetimes of the upper excited O2(1sigma(g)+) have been determined in a mixture of 7 vol % benzene in carbon tetrachloride, in chloroform, and in perdeuterated

With the expanding application of eco-friendly natural photosensitizers in photovoltaics, thoroughly investigating energy and charge transfer mechanisms is crucial for enhancing the performance of chlorophyll-based devices. Here, we employed quantum chemistry and spectroscopy to explore hybrid systems comprising a sodium zinc chlorophyll (SZC) donor paired with nonfullerene acceptors in various configurations. The L8-BO acceptor demonstrated superior energy level alignment, complementary light absorption, and larger electrostatic potential differences when interacting with SZC, thereby strengt

The surface functionalization chemistry of nanomaterials remains a black box, where the dynamic modification process is conventionally imperceptible, which severely limits the rational design of advanced nanohybrids. Herein, a holistic strategy that transforms upconversion nanorods (UCNR) surface functionalization from an empirically treated outcome into an optically self-reporting process via near-infrared (NIR)-mediated photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization is present. This three-in-one design, where the UCNR concurre

Iron availability affects oceanic primary productivity and the strength of the biological carbon pump. However, the mechanism of iron solubility in hypersaline environments is poorly understood. In this work, we investigated the extremely halophilic archaeon Haloferax volcanii to reduce ferrihydrite under 25% salinity, aiming to elucidate its energy metabolism associated with extracellular electron transfer (EET). Ferrihydrite reduction by H. volcanii reached a plateau around the eighth day, with an Fe(III) conversion of approximately 41%. The redox-active substances on the cell surface play a

Photochemistry offers a powerful platform for enabling unique bond cleavage and formation. However, achieving precise stereochemical control while suppressing persistent racemic background reactions remains a fundamental challenge in this field. Herein, we report a highly enantio- and diastereoselective [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of 2-cyanoacrylamides-acyclic trisubstituted alkenes-using a dual catalytic system. Despite non-selective triplet energy transfer to both catalyst-bound and unbound substrates, high stereoselectivity is achieved through a dual Curtin-Hammett kinetic control strategy.

Lead (Pb), a heavy metal with extensive industrial applications, poses significant risks to human health and the environment. These detrimental effects have driven strict global and local regulations, such as World Health Organization and Taiwan's drinking water limits, to minimize exposure and protect public health. To ensure compliance with these regulatory standards, we engineered lead ion biosensors by fusing microbial metal-binding proteins with cyan (CFP) and yellow (YFP) fluorescent proteins. These biosensors undergo a lead-induced conformational change in live cells, bringing the donor
