Pathological fracture of the right distal radius caused by Enterobacter aerogenes osteomyelitis in an adult.

A pathological fracture is a break in a diseased bone caused by weakening of the bone structure by a pathological process with no identifiable trauma. Acute bacterial osteomyelitis that results in pathological fractures in the extremities is rare in adults. To our knowledge, we report the first case of Enterobacter aerogenes osteomyelitis of the right distal radius, complicated with a pathological fracture, in a 79-year-old man with diabetes, which was diagnosed by radiological, microbiological, and histopathological examinations. He recovered well after an 8-week course of antibiotics and sur

Development of an immobilization and detection method of Enterobacter sakazakii from powdered infant formula.

Enterobacter sakazakii is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that is associated with rare but life-threatening cases of meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis in premature and full-term infants. In the present study, a procedure was developed for immobilization of E. sakazakii with zirconium hydroxide coupled with detection by a species-specific duplex PCR, based on 16s-23s rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and ompA gene. Specificity of duplex PCR was tested against two-type strains, six isolates of E. sakazakii and other eight non-E. sakazakii species. When pure culture of E.

[Nosocomial colonization and infection by multiresistant Enterobacter cloacae strains on a pediatric oncological unit].

A multiresistant E. cloacae strain spread during a six month period in a paediatric oncology ward amongst nine children, who had different tumors and malformations. Three children who had shared a room were especially affected. E. cloacae was isolated 122 times from the children with tumors and five times from their environment. Specimens from which the bacteria were isolated, included blood cultures, catheter tips, wound swabs, drains, skin and mucous membranes from most parts of the body. The majority of the E. cloacae strains were resistant to ampicillin, mezlocillin, piperacillin, azlocill

Enterobacter agglomerans lipopolysaccharide-induced changes in pulmonary surfactant as a factor in the pathogenesis of byssinosis.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Enterobacter agglomerans and pulmonary surfactant mixtures were centrifuged in discontinuous sucrose gradients to determine whether LPS bound to surfactant and examined in a Langmuir trough with a Wilhelmy balance to determine whether LPS altered the surface activity of surfactant. The LPS was found to bind to the surfactant and altered its surface tension properties. The binding of LPS to surfactant in the lung may change the physiological properties of surfactant and be a possible mechanism for the pathogenesis of byssinosis.

Relation of beta-lactamase activity and cellular location to resistance of Enterobacter to penicillins and cephalosporins.

The Enterobacter species E. aerogenes, E. cloacae, and E. hafnia were examined for resistance to penicillin and cephalosporin derivatives. All were resistant to benzyl penicillin, ampicillin, 6 [d(-)alpha-amino-p-hydroxyphenylacetamido] penicillanic acid, cephaloridine, cephalothin, and cephalexin. A significant number were sensitive to carbenicillin and 6 [d(-)alpha-carboxy-3-thienylacetamido] penicillanic acid. No differences among the three species were noted. The beta-lactamase activity was cell-bound, and was not released by osmotic shock, toluene treatment, or diphenylamine treatment. It

Characterization of the novel class A β-Lactamase gene blaKOB-1 in an Enterobacter isolate.

BACKGROUND: Class A serine β-lactamases are important enzymes that contribute to bacterial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, especially in gram-negative bacilli (e.g., Enterobacteriaceae). These enzymes are highly diverse with many molecular variants, and some enzymes (such as SHV and TEM) can be used to extend the inactivation spectrum to the latest generation of cephalosporins by mutation. Consequently, the mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents in bacteria and the clinical implications of antimicrobial resistance need to be more comprehensively studied. METHODS: Animal fecal sa

Temocillin efficacy and emergence of resistance in Enterobacter cloacae Complex in a murine peritonitis model.

BACKGROUND: Temocillin (TEM) is a seducing alternative to treat multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales thanks to a narrow spectrum, resistance to hydrolysis by ESBLs and some carbapenemases and limited impact on the gut microbiota. However, its efficacy on Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) is unclear. We evaluated TEM efficacy against ECC, in vitro and in a high-inoculum murine peritonitis model. METHODS: Five TEM-susceptible E. xiangfangensis UTI strains and an isogenic pair of E. asburiae clinical isolates-E. asburiae TEM_S and E. asburiae TEM_R-were studied. MICs, bactericidal kinetics and

The clinical impact and dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter: a genome-based study in China.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter (CPEn) has globally emerged to be a severe threat to human health. However, the disease spectrum, impact on affected patients' outcomes, and transmission of CPEn are largely uncharacterized. We performed genome sequencing on a collection of CPEn clinical isolates spanning a six-year period, collating corresponding disease spectrum data and patient prognosis. Among the 128 sequenced CPEn, 2/3 were clinical isolates from a range of infections with bloodstream infections the most common. The remaining isolates were obtained from patient screening and considere

Emergence of a carbapenem-resistant and colistin-heteroresistant Enterobacter cloacae clinical isolate in Japan.

A carbapenem-resistant and colistin-heteroresistant clinical isolate of Enterobacter cloacae was obtained from an inpatient in Okinawa, Japan. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of both imipenem and meropenem were 32 μg/mL. The isolate showed heteroresistance to colistin using the Etest method and resistance to colistin using the broth microdilution method. It had a disrupted ompC and a mutation in the promoter region of blaACT-2, but did not harbor any genes encoding carbapenemase. The disruption of ompC and the mutation in blaACT-2 was associated with the carbapenem resistance of this iso

Resistance to imipenem, cefepime, and cefpirome associated with mutation in Omp36 osmoporin of Enterobacter aerogenes.

Enterobacter aerogenes develops increased multidrug resistance via a functional alteration of outer-membrane permeability associated with a decrease in porin function. We have sequenced the gene coding the major porin of Enterobacter aerogenes, omp36. The sequence shows a high similarity with the Klebsiella pneumoniae ompK36 gene and is closely related to the enterobacterial OmpC family. Sequence analysis of several Omp36 issued from clinical strains indicated variability in putative cell-surface exposed domains. Interestingly, substitution Gly112Asp was observed in the conserved eyelet L3 reg

Whole-genome sequencing and antibiotic resistance analysis of a clinical carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter chuandaensis.

This study aimed to characterize a rare clinical isolate, Enterobacter chuandaensis, carrying the carbapenem resistance gene blaNDM-1. The antimicrobial susceptibility analysis revealed that E. chuandaensis EC001 was resistant to the majority of commonly used antimicrobial agents, except for amikacin, chloramphenicol, and minocycline. The results of the modified carbapenem inactivation method and EDTA-modified carbapenem inactivation method confirmed that E. chuandaensis EC001 produces metallo-β-lactamase. E. chuandaensis EC001 was typed as sequence type 2493 and presented an extensive drug-re

Quorum sensing disruption in Enterobacter spp.: unlocking new therapeutic pathways against multidrug-resistant infections.

Enterobacter spp., members of the ESKAPE group of pathogens, are increasingly recognized for their involvement in nosocomial infections and remarkable adaptability, particularly in hospital settings. This review highlights the intricate quorum-sensing (QS) systems in Enterobacter species, emphasizing both canonical and non-canonical pathways, including the acyl-homoserine lactone-mediated AI-1 system, LuxS-dependent AI-2 systems, and the solo LuxR system. QS systems regulate critical bacterial behaviors, including biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and virulence gene expression. Additio

Genomic and functional characterization of novel therapeutic lytic bacteriophages targeting multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae.

The alarming rates at which extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and pandrug-resistant (PDR) Enterobacter cloacae in hospitals are increasing has begun to severely limit treatment options, and thus the urgency for alternative interventions, including bacteriophage therapy. The purpose of the study was to isolate and molecularly characterize phages that can infect E. cloacae, and, furthermore, to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of the four novel lytic bacteriophages (MMRP1, MMRP2, MMRP3, and MMRP4) against antimicrobial-resistant E. cloacae isolates and to evaluate their potential as alternative
