Analysis of the prevalence of tetracycline resistance genes in clinical isolates of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium in a Japanese hospital.

Prevalence of seven tetracycline resistance (TC(R)) genes--tet(L), tet(M), tet(K), tet(O), tet(S), tet(T), and tet(U)--which are known to be distributed to gram-positive cocci was analyzed for 224 Enterococcus faecalis and 46 Enterococcus faecium clinical isolates obtained in a Japanese hospital. Any of the TC(R) genes was detected in 75.9% of all the enterococcal strains. The tet(M) was detected at highest rates in both E. faecalis (75.0%) and E. faecium (69.6%), followed by tet(L), which was harbored in 6.7% of E. faecalis isolates and 30.4% of E. faecium isolates. The tet(O), tet(S), and te

Modulation of experimental colitis by Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, and Bacillus subtilis: insights from infectious and chemical models.

The roles of Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) in colitis remain poorly defined, with existing literature presenting inconsistent and often contradictory evidence. This study aimed to elucidate their contributions to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using both infectious (non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. typhimurium) and chemical (dextran sulfate sodium, DSS)-induced colitis models. Colitis was induced in C57BL/6 mice via a single oral dose of S. typhimurium (ATCC14028) and/or administration of D

[Investigation of Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Factors of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis Strains Isolated from Clinical Samples].

Enterococci, which are commonly found in the environment, cause serious infections despite the absence of well-defined virulence factors and toxins. Knowing the virulence properties of enterococci is important to understand the complex pathogenic structures. In this study, we aimed to investigate the virulence factors (asa1, hyl, cylA, efa, ebp, ace, esp, gelE, sprE, fsrA, fsrB, fsrC genes, gelatinase activity, hemolysin, hydrogen peroxide and biofilm production) and antibiotic resistance of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis strains isolated from clinical specimens. Antimicrobial resistance profiles of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolated from artisanal food of animal origin in Argentina.

Enterococci are part of the indigenous microbiota of human gastrointestinal tract and food of animal origin. Enterococci inhabiting non-human reservoirs play a critical role in the acquisition and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance determinants. The aim of this work was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium strains recovered from artisanal food of animal origin. Samples of goat cheese (n = 42), cow cheese (n = 40), artisanal salami (n = 30), and minced meat for the manufacture of hamburgers (n = 60) were analyzed. Phenotypic and ge

When Less Is More: Volume Considerations in the Treatment of Enterococcus faecalis Endocarditis.

A 6-week regimen of intravenous ampicillin and ceftriaxone is currently the consensus, guideline-recommended, first-line treatment for Enterococcus faecalis endocarditis. This regimen is associated with significant salt and volume administration in a patient population susceptible to the development of hypervolemia and heart failure, which are associated with worse clinical outcomes. As a consequence of Hurricane Helene, the United States experienced significant intravenous fluid shortages in 2024 and 2025, prompting hospitals to switch from infusion delivery to push administration of many med

Probiotic and Postbiotic Potentials of Enterococcus faecalis EF-2001: A Safety Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics, which are live microorganisms that, when given in sufficient quantities, promote the host's health, have drawn a lot of interest for their ability to enhance gut health. Enterococcus faecalis, a member of the human gut microbiota, has shown promise as a probiotic candidate due to its functional attributes. However, safety concerns associated with certain strains warrant comprehensive evaluation before therapeutic application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, E. faecalis EF-2001, originally isolated from fecal samples of a healthy human infant, was subjected to a m

Identification of Multiple Iron Uptake Mechanisms in Enterococcus faecalis and Their Relationship to Virulence.

Among the unfavorable conditions bacteria encounter within the host is restricted access to essential trace metals such as iron. To overcome iron deficiency, bacteria deploy multiple strategies to scavenge iron from host tissues, with abundant examples of iron acquisition systems being implicated in bacterial pathogenesis. Yet the mechanisms utilized by the major nosocomial pathogen Enterococcus faecalis to maintain intracellular iron balance are poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a systematic investigation to identify and characterize the iron acquisition mechanisms of E. faecalis

Construction and Activity Testing of a Modular Fusion Peptide against Enterococcus faecalis.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance in enterococci is a great concern encountered worldwide. Almost all enterococci exhibit significant levels of resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, semi-synthetic penicillin and most cephalosporins, primarily due to the expression of low-affinity penicillin-binding proteins. The development of new and novel antibacterial agents against enterococci is a significant need of the hour. In this research, we have constructed a modular peptide against Enterococcus faecalis. The enzymatic domain of the constructed peptide BP404 is from the bacteriocin BacL1 and t

Enterococcus faecalis-associated lung abscess in a male adolescent- a case report.

BACKGROUND: Enterococci are rarely considered pulmonary pathogens; they are usually regarded as colonizers of the airway. The authors present the case of a previously healthy male adolescent, with complaints of fatigue and chest pain, who was diagnosed with Enterococcus faecalis-associated acute primary lung abscess. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 17-year old boy was admitted to the pediatric ward due to a one-week history of fatigue, inspiratory left side chest pain, dry cough and nasal obstruction. On admission at the emergency department, he was afebrile, with no signs of respirat

Western Immunoblotting for the Diagnosis of Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus gallolyticus Infective Endocarditis.

Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) remains a diagnostic challenge. In our center, despite a systematic and exhaustive microbiological diagnostics strategy, 22% of patients with BCNE remain without an identified etiology. In an effort to determine the relevance of using Western blot (WB) for the etiological diagnosis of BCNE in patients with early antibiotic use, we developed specific assays for the major infective endocarditis (IE) causative agents, namely, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus anginosus, and Streptococcus gallolyticus. Our technique was effective

Phenotype and genotype alteration during adaptive evolution of Enterococcus faecalis to antimicrobials.

The current worldwide emergence of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria constitutes an important growing public health threat. The mechanisms of the emergence and dissemination of resistance remain to be elucidated. Adaptation laboratory evolution provide an approach to investigate the acquisition of de novo mutations that confers drug resistance. In our study, 3 Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates and E. faecalis ATCC29212 were evolved resistant to 8 kinds of antimicrobials spanning five chemical classes, including ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, gatifloxacin, penicillin, imipenem, vancomyc

Purulent pericarditis as a complication of bacteraemic Enterococcus faecalis urinary tract infection.

Purulent pericarditis is a rare clinical entity in the modern antibiotic era. The most common portal of entry is thought to be direct extension from a primary lung source and is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae We report the case of a man aged 69 years who presented with purulent pericarditis due to Enterococcus faecalis likely caused by haematogenous spread from a urinary tract source. Urgent pericardiocentesis was vital and restored his haemodynamic stability. He was treated for a total duration of 4 weeks with susceptible antibiotic

Structure and Dimerization of IreB, a Negative Regulator of Cephalosporin Resistance in Enterococcus faecalis.

Enterococcus faecalis, a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections, exhibits intrinsic resistance to most cephalosporins, which are antibiotics in the beta-lactam family that target cell-wall biosynthesis. A comprehensive understanding of the underlying genetic and biochemical mechanisms of cephalosporin resistance in E. faecalis is lacking. We previously determined that a transmembrane serine/threonine kinase (IreK) and its cognate phosphatase (IreP) reciprocally regulate cephalosporin resistance in E. faecalis, dependent on the kinase activity of IreK. Other than IreK itself, thus far th
