A Meta-Analysis of the Effect of Corticosteroid Injection for Enthesopathy of the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis Origin.

PURPOSE: The null hypothesis that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on visual analog scale for pain in patients with enthesopathy of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (eECRB) origin 6 months after treatment was tested. Our secondary hypotheses were that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on pain intensity at 1 and 3 months after treatment; that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on grip strength at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment; and that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores at 1, 3 and 6

Acromial enthesopathy and rotator cuff tear. A radiologic and histologic postmortem investigation of the coracoacromial arch.

Changes of the coracoacromial ligament (CAL) at its insertion into the undersurface of the acromion were studied radiologically and histologically in 76 autopsy specimens. Two changes were noted: (1) a downward, bony projection of the acromion, an anatomic variant limited to the area covered by the CAL, which might reduce the height of the subacromial compartment, and (2) a thickened layer of fibrocartilage, constituting a potential cause for narrowing of the subacromial space. The former might act as a predisposing factor for the impingement syndrome, whereas the latter could develop in respo

Unusual Case of Lateral Knee Pain: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Evidence of Isolated Lateral Patellotibial Ligament Enthesopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Patellofemoral stability is maintained by a complex interplay of osseous, muscular, and ligamentous structures, with the retinacular system playing a central role. While the medial patellofemoral and patellotibial ligaments are well characterized, the lateral patellotibial ligament (LPTL) has been less frequently described, and isolated pathology involving this structure is rarely reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 23-year-old athletic male presenting with a 2-week history of activity-related lateral knee pain without preceding trauma. Clinical exam

The occurrence of lower limb enthesopathy in coeliac disease patients without clinical signs of articular involvement.

OBJECTIVE: Coeliac disease (CD) is a systemic autoimmune condition induced by gluten consumption in genetically predisposed people, affecting ∼1% of the general population. In the literature, there are many studies that report the association between CD and different kinds of arthritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of entheseal abnormalities by US in patients with CD without clinical signs of articular involvement as compared with healthy control subjects. METHODS: Sixty patients with CD attending the gastroenterology outpatient clinic of the University Federico II of

Eccentric contraction-dominant exercise leads to molecular biological changes in enthesis and enthesopathy-like morphological changes.

Entheses, which are tendon-to-bone attachment sites in the musculoskeletal system, play important roles in optimizing the mechanical stress and force transmitted from the muscle to the bone. Sports-related enthesopathy shows pathological features, including hyperplasia of the fibrocartilage (FC) region in the enthesis. The amount of exercise and type of muscle contraction during movement is involved in the pathogenesis of sports-related enthesopathy; however, the details of this condition are unclear. Here we examined the molecular pathways involved in the morphological changes of the muscle-t

Enthesopathy formation in the humerus: Data from known age-at-death and known occupation skeletal collections.

Enthesopathies, in the guise of musculoskeletal skeletal stress markers (MSM), have been widely used to reconstruct activity levels in human skeletal populations. In general, studies have focused on their presence in the upper limb, which is used in the majority of daily activities. The aim of this study was to use some of the attachment sites on the humerus to explore the relationship between enthesopathy formation, activity, and the ageing process. The skeletal sample used in this study comprised male adult skeletons with known age-at-death and known occupations from the late-19th and early-

Bilateral deep infrapatellar bursitis associated with tibial tuberosity enthesopathy in a case of juvenile ankylosing spondylitis.

A case of bilateral deep infrapatellar bursitis is reported in a 19-year-old man suffering from juvenile ankylosing spondylitis and surgically treated for bilateral tibial tuberosity enthesopathy. In addition to erosive non-specific bone remodelling the excised specimens showed, in the bursa, synovial layer hyperplasia with mild subintimal inflammatory cell infiltration, i.e. changes similar to those of synovitis in ankylosing spondylitis. The respective roles of the inflammatory "terrain" and of local shearing stress are discussed.

HLA-B27-associated spondyloarthritis and enthesopathy in childhood: clinical, pathologic, and radiographic observations in 58 patients.

HLA-B27 typing of all arthritic children helped to identify and focus attention on a subset whose disease was pathogenetically related to and demonstrated clinical features of ankylosing spondylitis and Reiter syndrome, but only rarely fulfilled current diagnostic criteria for those disorders (spondyloarthritis). In contrast to other forms of childhood arthritis, enthesopathy (inflammation at the sites of attachment of ligaments and tendons to bone) was a prominent feature in 75%; a family history of similar arthritis was obtained from 60%; boys were more frequently affected (2:1); urethritis,

The distinct musculoskeletal phenotypes of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes: a sonographic characterization of enthesopathy burden.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal complications represent a significant burden in diabetes, yet the distinct presentation between Type 1 (T1DM) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) remains under-characterized. This study aimed to evaluate and quantify the burden of rheumatic manifestations and subclinical enthesopathy in these two distinct clinical phenotypes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 65 patients (21 T1DM, 44 T2DM). A comprehensive rheumatological evaluation assessed adhesive capsulitis (defined as painful restriction of active and passive motion in ≥ 2 planes), knee osteoa

Prevalence and progression of radiographic enthesopathy at hip and pelvis in patients with axial spondyloarthritis based on CT assessment.

OBJECTIVE: This single‑center, retrospective study aimed to investigate the prevalence and progression of entheseal lesions at the hip and pelvis via computed tomography (CT) and determine the associated factors in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). METHODS: AxSpA patients who underwent CT including the pelvis and hip and age-sex-matched controls who underwent CT for genitourinary indications were analyzed. Eight bilateral entheseal sites were evaluated and scored as follows: 0 (no damage), 1 (irregularities and/or erosions), and 2 (enthesophytes). Agreement between readers for CT

Psoriasis and the risk of foot and ankle tendinopathy or enthesopathy in the absence of psoriatic arthritis: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Imaging studies in patients with cutaneous psoriasis have demonstrated asymptomatic bone and tendon changes, commonly of the foot and ankle. We sought to determine if patients with cutaneous psoriasis have an increased risk of clinically significant foot and ankle tendinopathy or enthesopathy compared with the general population. METHODS: Patients with cutaneous psoriasis and a general population cohort were identified in The Health Improvement Network, a general practice medical records database from the UK. All patients with psoriatic arthritis were excluded. Cox proportional-ha

Avulsion fragmentation of the tibial tuberosity apophysis and associated patellar tendon enthesopathy in a skeletally immature dog.

A 9.5-month-old, female entire, 31.3 kg crossbred dog was presented with a 12 week history of moderate weight-bearing right pelvic limb lameness. Radiographic, computed tomographic, and ultrasonographic imaging revealed progressive avulsion fragmentation of the right tibial tuberosity apophysis and a patellar tendon insertional enthesopathy without physeal involvement. Conservative management was successful in achieving a good clinical outcome. A progressive avulsion of the contralateral proximal tibial physes that occurred concurrently resulted in development of an excessive tibial plateau sl

Atlantoaxial subluxation in children with seronegative enthesopathy and arthropathy syndrome: 2 case reports and a review of the literature.

We describe 2 HLA-B27 positive children with seronegative enthesopathy and arthropathy (SEA) syndrome who developed spontaneous (nontraumatic) atlantoaxial subluxation early in their disease course. Neither child had evidence of spinal cord compression but both had progressive atlantoaxial subluxation in spite of conservative treatment. Both underwent elective posterior cervical (C1-C2) fusion.
