Field evaluation of entomological surveillance techniques for leishmaniasis vector sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Leishmaniasis remains a major public health concern in Sri Lanka, as emphasized in the first National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Leishmaniasis. The lack of a systematic surveillance plan was identified as one of the key challenges to implementing a control programme. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of different entomological techniques for leishmaniasis vector surveillance. Monthly collections were conducted from December 2023 to June 2024 in two Medical Officer of Health areas, Divulapitiya and Mirigama, in the Gampaha District. The surveillance techniques i

The Contribution of Entomological Surveillance to the Control of Chagas Disease in Endemic Regions: An Integrative Literature Review.

Chagas disease remains a significant public health challenge in various endemic regions of Latin America. The persistence of vector-borne transmission highlights the complexity of the issue and the limitations of traditional strategies. In this context, entomological surveillance plays a strategic and multifaceted role, not only in the early detection of triatomine bugs but also in guiding control actions tailored to territorial realities. This study aimed to analyse the contributions of entomological surveillance to the control of Chagas disease in endemic regions, considering the integration

Entomological survey of Dirofilaria spp. in Sardinia (Italy): molecular detection and mosquito species distribution.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis, caused by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, is expanding across Europe because of climate change, raising veterinary and zoonotic concerns. Among over 70 mosquito species considered to be implicated in their transmission, Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus are recognized as major vectors. In Sardinia, where canine dirofilariosis is endemic, entomological information on Dirofilaria circulation was previously lacking. This study investigated mosquito species composition and assessed the presence of D. immitis and D. repens across five sites on the island. M

Epidemiologic, Entomologic, and Virologic Findings during Reemergence of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus, Argentina.

During November 2023-April 2024, a total of 1,543 horses with neurologic disease from rural areas in 17 provinces of Argentina were reported to national animal health authorities. Nested reverse transcription PCR, quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR, and sequencing of equine brain necropsies confirmed western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) infection in 23 horses and 1 sheep. Phylogenetic analyses identified a lineage previously detected in Argentina in 1957, overlapping areas affected during the 1980s epizootics. Overall, we aspirated 1,362 female mosquitoes (12 species) from 1

Entomological Profiles of Households in Plasmodium falciparum Case Foci and Comparison Areas in Grand'Anse, Haiti.

Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, remains the last island in the Caribbean that is still endemic for malaria, with Haiti bearing the highest caseload. Few studies have examined the ecology of malaria vectors in Haiti. Five species of Anopheles have been described on the island, but the exophilic Anopheles albimanus (An. albimanus) is considered the primary vector of malaria in Haiti. Households recruited for a case-control study profiling risk factors for symptomatic Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) infections were approached to participate in an entomologic

Geographical distribution of potential mechanical vectors implicated in Surra transmission in Spain: an entomological perspective.

BACKGROUND: Haematophagous Diptera can transmit a wide range of diseases to both humans and animals. Some species of the Trypanosoma genus rely on these vectors for transmission, either cyclically or mechanically. Trypanosoma evansi, the causative agent of Surra, is the only African-origin trypanosome species detected in Spain to date, which is mechanically transmitted. METHODS: To assess the occurrence and distribution of potential mechanical vectors at the national level, a systematic review was conducted on the Hippoboscidae, Muscidae and Tabanidae families. The review followed the methodo

Molecular and entomological surveillance of malaria vectors in urban and rural communities of Benguela Province, Angola.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in Angola, with Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) and An. funestus s.l. being the primary vectors. This study aimed to clarify the information gaps concerning local Anopheles mosquito populations. Our objectives were to assess their abundance, geographical dispersion, and blood-feeding patterns. We also investigated their insecticide resistance. Molecular methods were used to identify sibling species, determine the origin of blood meals, measure Plasmodium falciparum infection rates, and detect the presence of knockdown resistance (kdr) mu

Postintervention Immunological and Entomological Survey of Lymphatic Filariasis in the City of Olinda, Brazil, 2015-2016.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a leading cause of disability due to infectious disease worldwide. The Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR) is the only remaining focus of LF in Brazil, where the parasite Wuchereria bancrofti is transmitted solely by the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus. This study reports the results of transmission assessment surveys and molecular xenomonitoring in the city of Olinda, RMR, after nearly 15 years (2015-2016) of interventions for LF elimination. Participants were screened for W. bancrofti antigen via immunochromatographic card tests (ICT) in: 1) door-to-door surveys con

Six decades of malaria vector control in southern Africa: a review of the entomological evidence-base.

BACKGROUND: Countries in the southern Africa region have set targets for malaria elimination between 2020 and 2030. Malaria vector control is among the key strategies being implemented to achieve this goal. This paper critically reviews published entomological research over the past six decades in three frontline malaria elimination countries namely, Botswana Eswatini and Namibia, and three second-line malaria elimination countries including Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The objective of the review is to assess the current knowledge and highlight gaps that need further research attention t

Malaria in migrant agricultural workers in western Ethiopia: entomological assessment of malaria transmission risk.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made great strides in malaria control over the last two decades. However, this progress has not been uniform and one concern has been reported high rates of malaria transmission in large agricultural development areas in western Ethiopia. Improved vector control is one way this transmission might be addressed, but little is known about malaria vectors in this part of the country. METHODS: To better understand the vector species involved in malaria transmission and their behaviour, human landing collections were conducted in Dangur woreda, Benishangul-Gumuz, between Ju

Impact of IRS: Four-years of entomological surveillance of the Indian Visceral Leishmaniases elimination programme.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, Bangladesh, India and Nepal agreed to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem. The approach to this was through improved case detection and treatment, and controlling transmission by the sand fly vector Phlebotomus argentipes, with indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticide. Initially, India applied DDT with stirrup pumps for IRS, however, this did not reduce transmission. After 2015 onwards, the pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin was applied with compression pumps, and entomological surveillance was initiated in 2016. METHODS: Eight sentinel sites

West Nile virus positive blood donation and subsequent entomological investigation, Austria, 2014.

The detection of West Nile virus (WNV) nucleic acid in a blood donation from Vienna, Austria, as well as in Culex pipiens pupae and egg rafts, sampled close to the donor's residence, is reported. Complete genomic sequences of the human- and mosquito-derived viruses were established, genetically compared and phylogenetically analyzed. The viruses were not identical, but closely related to each other and to recent Czech and Italian isolates, indicating co-circulation of related WNV strains within a confined geographic area. The detection of WNV in a blood donation originating from an area with l

Spatial distribution of the risk of dengue and the entomological indicators in Sumaré, state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Dengue fever is a major public health problem worldwide, caused by any of four virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4; Flaviviridae: Flavivirus), transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito. Reducing the levels of infestation by A. aegypti is one of the few current strategies to control dengue fever. Entomological indicators are used by dengue national control program to measure the infestation of A. aegypti, but little is known about predictive power of these indicators to measure dengue risk. In this spatial case-control study, we analyzed the spatial distribution of the risk of dengue and the i
