Relationship between environmental exposures in children and adult lung disease: the case for outdoor exposures.

There is a growing understanding that chronic respiratory diseases in adults have their origins in early life. Adverse environmental exposures occurring in vulnerable periods during lung growth and development in the fetal period and in early childhood that alter lung structure and limit the growth in lung function may have lifelong consequences. Evidence is increasing that exposure to the ambient environment, including air pollutants, persistent toxic substances, water pollutants and respiratory viral infections, can inhibit lung function growth and predispose to chronic non-malignant lung di

Pesticides in Swiss orchards: from environmental reservoirs to human exposure.

One of the main challenges in understanding the fate and impacts of pesticides is to incorporate multiple environmental and human matrices and their interrelations. This study aimed to identify the most critical substances through detection frequency (DF) analysis of multiple environmental and biological matrices of Swiss study site containing orchards. A sampling campaign was conducted during the harvest season of 2021 that encompassed conventional and organic farming systems (FS), and 3 population groups (farmers, neighbors, and consumers). We analyzed 208 pesticide residues (active substanc

Impact of environmental heavy metal exposure on cardiovascular disease mortality.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the primary cause of mortality worldwide, and heavy metal exposure, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), significantly impacts this global burden of CVD. Heavy metal-related cardiovascular toxicity results from their ability to induce oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and dysregulation of lipid metabolism. We aimed to investigate the association between blood concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Hg and cardiovascular mortality in a representative U.S. adult population. METHOD: Using the 1999-2018 National Health and N

Chronic environmental caffeine exposure induces gut transcriptomic reprogramming in zebrafish.

Aquatic contaminants are of growing concern due to their widespread presence and potential impacts on aquatic organisms. Caffeine, a commonly detected emerging contaminant, enters water bodies largely through widespread consumption and by insufficient wastewater treatment. Although previous studies have examined caffeine's effects on aquatic species, most have focused on short-term exposures that may not reflect chronic, low-level environmental conditions. Here, we investigate the physiological and transcriptomic impacts of both acute and chronic caffeine exposure in zebrafish (Danio rerio). A

Environmental heat exposure triggers neuronal apoptosis via NCOA4-mediated ferritinophagy.

Global warming increases the frequency and intensity of environmental heat exposure, posing a growing threat to public health. While heat-related mortality is well-documented, the neurological consequences of heat exposure remain poorly characterized at the mechanistic level. Here, by integrating epidemiological data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), clinical transcriptomic data from heatstroke patients, and experimental models, we identified intracellular iron dyshomeostasis as a critical driver of heat-induced neuronal injury. Mechanistically, severe heat

Impact of self-reported environmental mould exposure on COPD outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Indoor and outdoor mould exposure can affect respiratory symptoms, but its contribution to COPD outcomes such as exacerbation rates or antibiotics courses is not well defined. Some patients with COPD develop chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), but the contribution of environmental exposure is not known. METHODS: We correlated activities or exposures related to mould with COPD outcomes in patients with COPD with or without CPA using a questionnaire. RESULTS: One hundred and forty patients were included and 60 had CPA in addition to COPD. Seventy-six were male and mean age was 6

Turkey National Mesothelioma Surveillance and Environmental Asbestos Exposure Control Program.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an important health problem due to ongoing asbestos exposure. Environmental asbestos exposure leads to a high risk of MM in Turkey. The Turkish Mesothelioma Working Group and the Turkish Public Health Institute designed and performed the Turkey National Mesothelioma Surveillance and Environmental Asbestos Exposure Control Program (TUNMES-EAECP). The aim of this study was to analyze the results of the TUNMES-EAECP. Patients diagnosed with MM (code C45.0-C45.9) between 2008 and 2012 were identified. The "from case to the field" method was used to determine the vill

Association between environmental exposure to cadmium and human semen quality.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal with toxicant to reproductive functions. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of environmental exposure to Cd on human semen quality. A total of 587 men from the general population, aged from 20 to 59 years old, and without occupational exposure to Cd were recruited from three provinces in China to participate in the study. The median of serum Cd was 1.9 μg/L (P25-P75:1.1-2.9). In case Cd was less than or equal to 6.3 μg/L (P95) and the semen parameters were logarithmically transformed, the inverse associations between Cd and semen volume (-0.03 ± 0.00

Environmental risk assessment of GE plants under low-exposure conditions.

The requirement for environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically engineered (GE) plants prior to large scale or commercial introduction into the environment is well established in national laws and regulations, as well as in international agreements. Since the first introductions of GE plants in commercial agriculture in the 1990s, a nearly universal paradigm has emerged for conducting these assessments based on a few guiding principles. These include the concept of case-by-case assessment, the use of comparative assessments, and a focus of the ERA on characteristics of the plant, the in

Association between environmental dust exposure and lung cancer in dogs.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the accumulation of black dust matter in lungs (anthracosis) and primary lung cancer in dogs. A retrospective study was carried out on material from 35 dogs with primary lung cancer and 160 controls. The amount, histological appearance and birefringence of anthracosis were assessed in pulmonary specimens by light microscopy, and the odds ratio (OR) calculated for dogs with primary lung cancer. The same factors were analysed to identify an association between tumour histotype, histological grade, and clinical stage. Papilla

Occupational exposure, environmental pollution and chronic respiratory symptoms in Vietnam.

Since the introduction of the market economy in 1986, Vietnam has been in the process of rapid economic development. However, the current state of affairs in the industries is very profit-oriented and due consideration is not given to the occupational health services and environmental health. In order to investigate the relationship among occupational exposure to dust/chemicals (toxic gases/fume), environmental pollution and chronic respiratory symptoms in Vietnam, the questionnaire standardized by the American Thoracic Society was applied to 1,562 subjects living in the Quang Ninh area and it

Cryptococcal meningitis in renal transplant patients associated with environmental exposure.

Fungal infections in renal transplant recipients are less common than bacterial infections; however, the morbidity from fungal infections is high. There is limited information in the literature concerning post-transplantation cryptococcal infection due to environmental exposure of patients living in high-risk areas. We report three patients who were diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis after kidney transplantation. Cryptococcal titers prior to transplant surgery were negative in all three patients. These patients all lived in rural areas and demonstrated evidence of environmental exposure le

Exposure to environmental chemicals relevant for respiratory hypersensitivity: European aspects.

The need for assessing air pollution exposure on the individual and population levels is urgent, as health effects are observed at concentrations even below existing air quality guidelines (AQG). Typical European concentrations and trends over time of four main air quality indicators (nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone and particulate matter) are presented, together with their revised WHO AQG. In order to describe concentrations of pollutants each individual and population groups are exposed to, methods have been developed that estimate these concentrations using different forms of model

Elevated urinary excretion of metallothionein due to environmental cadmium exposure.

Metallothionein, a low molecular weight cadmium-binding protein, has been determined for the first time in urine of "itai-itai" disease patients and other Japanese women environmentally exposed to cadmium. On a group basis, the urinary metallothionein levels of "itai-itai" disease patients and suspected patients were significantly higher than that of women living in a cadmium-polluted area. Women living in a non-polluted area excreted significantly less metallothionein than women living in a cadmium-polluted area. A similar trend was observed for urinary beta 2-microglobulin, a nonspecific ind

Exposure to dust-borne bacteria in agriculture. I. Environmental studies.

In order to evaluate the exposure of agricultural workers to dust-borne bacteria, microbiological examinations of the air were performed in grain storing and processing plants and in animal houses. Large concentrations of viable microorganisms, ranging from 129.2 to 1289.9 thousands/m3 of air, were found in the rooms contaminated with grain dust and much lower in those contaminated with flour dust (22.6 thousands/m3). Bacteria predominated in the air of grain plants, whereas actinomycetes and fungi were less numerous. The most abundant bacteria were Gram negative rods of the species Erwinia he

Environmental BPA exposure promotes flavivirus replication and extends mosquito lifespan.

Environmental exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is widespread, yet their influence on arthropod-borne virus transmission remains poorly understood. Here, we show that bisphenol A (BPA), a common EDC, enhances the replication of Zika virus (ZIKV) and Dengue virus (DENV) in the mosquito Aedes aegypti by modulating host oxidative stress responses. Through systematic screening of nine EDCs, BPA and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), significantly promoted viral replication, with BPA exhibiting the strongest effect. Chronic larval exposure to BPA led to its residual accumulation

Sun Exposure and Anorexia Nervosa: A Potential Environmental-Biological Interaction?

OBJECTIVE: Despite first being described in 1888, anorexia nervosa continues to be the deadliest of all psychiatric illnesses. Although efforts have been made to elucidate the aetiological factors involved in the illness, little progress has been made in uncovering what contributes to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa. A particular shortcoming of the current literature has been the investigation of interactions between environmental and biological factors. One such interaction which has yet to receive attention in anorexia nervosa is that of sun exposure. Exposure to the sun-
