Rethinking Irgarol toxicity: a unified framework linking environmental fate, bioactivity, and human exposure.

Irgarol, originally aimed as antifouling biocide for marine environments, has become a contaminant of emerging concern due to its environmental persistence and widespread dissemination. The prevailing approach to assessment has centered on environmental prevalence and immediate toxicological repercussions, with insufficient attention paid to the dynamic mechanisms that dictate biological effects across ecological and human domains. We introduce a novel Exposure-Transformation-Response (ETR) framework, which advances the concept that Irgarol toxicity is a function of environmental persistence,

The scientific consensus on the beauty of snowflakes: A case study for the aesthetics of science.

Philosophers of science interested in aesthetics have tended to privilege the epistemic and cognitive dimensions of science. Historians of science interested in aesthetics have largely focused on the aesthetics of scientific images and artefacts. Productive exchanges between these traditions of scholarship have been few and far between. Drawing inspiration from recent studies on the aesthetics of paleontology and geology, I aim to stimulate such exchanges by offering a historically rooted case study for the aesthetics of science, centred not on a theory or discipline but on an object: the snow

How to Ensure a Bright Future for Reproductive Sciences in Animal Conservation.

The chapters in this book emphasize the critical role that reproductive sciences play in wildlife conservation, highlighting the significant progress that has been made since the first edition was published a decade ago. While initially, there was significant excitement around technologies like cloning and bringing animals back from extinction, practical limitations and ethical concerns have since tempered expectations. This new edition underscores that while advanced reproductive technologies can contribute to conservation, they are not standalone solutions for reversing wildlife population d

Experimental study on the effect of environmental parameters on Rn-220 exhalation rate.

Radon-220 is an important isotope of radon. Due to its short half-life, it is highly sensitive to changes in environmental parameters during its exhalation from the surface of the earth, which poses significant challenges for precise measurement and modeling. To study the influence of different environmental parameters on the diffusion rate of Rn-220 from the soil surface, this research used an indoor soil gas collection device to simulate process of Rn-220 exhalation. The RAD7 instrument was used to continuously monitor the changes in the concentration of Rn-220 on the soil surface, and at th

Pathways, evidence types, and interpretive boundaries in machine learning-assisted source analysis of soil metal(loid)s.

Machine learning (ML) is increasingly incorporated into source-related analytical tasks for soil metal(loid)s, including source structure identification, quantitative source apportionment, and environmental driver analysis and model interpretation. However, existing reviews lack a systematic framework organized around environmental management tasks and evidence types. We systematically searched Web of Science and Scopus following PRISMA and included 204 studies. Bibliometric analysis showed rapid growth since 2020, with supervised learning more common than unsupervised learning and methodologi

World-wide environmental problems.

Man and the physical and natural resources necessary to support him in a civilized society are on a collision course. It is simple to say that man cannot continue to grow in number at an ever-increasing rate without a destructive effect upon the environment. Positive scientific proof for this impending calamity is not now available, yet many indications--sometimes physical and sometimes natural--point towards major world-wide environmental troubles in the near future. A number of environmental problems are described, particularly as they relate to the total world system. A computer model simul

Methods to reduce environmental nontuberculous mycobacteria exposure: revisiting the recent literature.

The incidence and prevalence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease (LD) cases are rising, with diagnosis and treatment proving difficult. With the preponderance of viable NTM in both natural and engineered environments, the understood route of human infection is through environmental exposures. In an effort to decrease the occurrence of NTM LD, methods to reduce environmental NTM exposures are of great interest to people with infection and the clinical community. In 2013, coauthor Falkinham summarized methods known at the time to reduce exposure to LD-causing Mycobacterium avium.

One Environmental Health: an emerging perspective in toxicology.

The One Environmental Health research approach, a subspecialty of the One Health initiative, focuses on toxic chemicals. Distinct disciplines work together to give a holistic perspective of a health concern through discrete disciplines, including, but not limited to, public health and the medical and veterinary sciences. In this article, we illustrate the concept of One Environmental Health with two case studies. One case study focuses on alligators and contributions to the field of endocrine disruption. The other case study focuses on whales and contributions to understanding carcinogenic met

Lessons learned from "the skeptical environmentalist": an environmental health perspective.

Few books about the environment have generated as much heated debate as Bjørn Lomborg's 'The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World', published by Cambridge University Press in 2001. A flavor of the controversy can be gleaned from a series of reviews and rebuttals published in 'Scientific American' (Rennie 2002). In general, most positive reviews appeared in the popular press (e.g., 'The Economist', 'Washington Post Book Review', 'The Wall Street Journal') and most negative reviews appeared in the scientific press (e.g., 'Science', 'Nature', 'Bioscience'). Although '

A decade of progress in transition metal-catalyzed sulfoxide reductions.

The deoxygenation of sulfoxides to sulfides is a fundamental reaction in organic synthesis, widely used in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and natural product chemistry. Traditional methods require stoichiometric reagents under harsh conditions, but transition metal catalysis now allows milder, more selective, and environmentally friendly deoxygenation. This review highlights recent advances in catalytic systems based on Mo, Ir, Mn, Co, and other metals, focusing on their mechanisms, substrate scopes, and sustainable design. Innovations in recyclable catalysts, green solvents, earth-abunda

Standardizing surgical equipment pick lists for sustainability: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical "pick lists" are compiled based on anticipated needs, without regular review. This leads to "overage"-supplies that are prepared but unused-with financial and environmental impacts. Standardization of lists is a strategy to reduce resource consumption and waste. This study collates the published impacts of pick list standardization initiatives on costs, outcomes, and provider satisfaction. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science. RESULTS: The search identified 11 papers for inclusion. Most included surgeon educati

Uncertainties in risk assessment for the determination of drinking water pollutant concentrations: Cryptosporidium case study.

There is a growing acknowledgement of the need to recognise uncertainties in the estimation of waterborne risks. In this paper, the strength of the science available to characterise Cryptosporidium risks in drinking water is investigated, in particular the determination of oocyst concentrations at various points in the chain of water supply. A recently developed scientific quality audit framework is used as a tool to guide this investigation. The framework systematically reveals the relatively greater strength of the science for the "upstream" elements (estimation of concentrations in environm

Microbial Interconnections in One Health: A Critical Nexus Between Companion Animals and Human Microbiomes.

The One Health approach is rapidly gaining the attention of the scientific community worldwide and is expected to be a major model of scientific reasoning in the 21st century, concerning medical, veterinary and environmental issues. The basic concept of One Health, that humans, animals and their environments are parts of the same natural world affecting each other, is rooted in most ethnic as well as in many religious traditions. Despite this unity and for historical reasons, medical, veterinary and environmental sciences developed independently. The One Health concept tries to reunite these a

Chiba study of Mother and Children's Health (C-MACH): cohort study with omics analyses.

PURPOSE: Recent epidemiological studies have shown that environmental factors during the fetal period to early childhood might affect the risk of non-communicable diseases in adulthood. This is referred to as the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) concept. The Chiba study of Mother and Children's Health (C-MACH) is a birth cohort study based on the DOHaD hypothesis and involves multiomics analysis. This study aims to explore the effects of genetic and environmental factors--particularly the fetal environment and postbirth living environment--on children's health, and to identi

Review of microbiologically influenced corrosion of dental metallic materials: Biofilm-mediated mechanisms, key determinants, and anticorrosion strategies.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) poses a significant threat to the integrity and service life of the surfaces of dental metallic materials prostheses and implants. Microorganisms forming biofilms alter the local environmental conditions on the surface of biomaterials and exacerbate biocorrosion processes. When oral metallic materials undergo corrosion, the leached toxic ions may cause inflammatory reactions, sensitization, and teratogenicity. However, little is known about the specific roles of different oral microorganisms in these corrosion mechanisms. A comprehensive understandi
