Cytokeratins in intracranial and intraspinal tissues.

The intermediate filament distribution pattern in cells and tissues of vertebrates reflects their differentiation or functional specialization state, their histogenesis, and their malignant transformation. In the case of cytokeratins, the characteristic epithelial intermediate filaments representing a complex group of about 30 polypeptides, extensive attention has been given to their expression in diverse epithelial and epithelioid cells. However, little is known about their distribution during fetal development and in neuroectodermal cells. This review specifically focuses on the data concern

Cystic dilation of the ventriculus terminalis in adults.

The ventriculus terminalis (VT) is a small ependyma-lined cavity within the conus medullaris that is in direct continuity with the central canal of the anterior portion of the spinal cord. Normally, such a cavity is identifiable only histologically in children and adults and can be visualized using common neuroradiological techniques only after dilation. Currently, the mechanisms of isolated dilation are not documented. The present work describes 2 cases of VT in elderly patients. Data from a histological and ultrastructural study of a case of VT dilation are reported, and the results are comp

Rethinking the cilia hypothesis of hydrocephalus.

Dysfunction of motile cilia in ependymal cells has been proposed to be a pathogenic cause of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) overaccumulation leading to ventricular expansion in hydrocephalus, primarily based on observations of enlarged ventricles in mouse models of primary ciliary dyskinesia. Here, we review human and animal evidence that warrants a rethinking of the cilia hypothesis in hydrocephalus. First, we discuss neuroembryology and physiology data that do not support a role for ependymal cilia as the primary propeller of CSF movement across the ventricles in the human brain, particularly dur

Neural tube defects. Some remarks on the possible role of glycosaminoglycans in the genesis of the dysraphic state, the anomaly in the configuration of the posterior cranial fossa, and hydrocephalus.

Recent developments in the field of experimentally induced neural tube defects (NTD) indicate that specific substances, namely the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) may play a role in the genesis of spinal malformations. The authors report the results obtained by evaluating the GAGs in rat fetuses with NTD, secondary to the administration of Trypan Blue during pregnancy. A characteristic decrease in GAGs formation in the spinal and cranial structures as well as in the subependymal regions of the brain was found in the malformed fetuses. The authors hypothesize that this anomaly in GAGs formation is re

Sarcoidosis of the CNS: comparison of unenhanced and enhanced MR images.

Sarcoidosis involving the CNS has a predilection for the leptomeninges, although parenchymal involvement occurs. We retrospectively evaluated the appearance of CNS sarcoidosis on unenhanced and enhanced MR images. MR studies were abnormal in 17 of 20 patients with CNS sarcoidosis. In all 17 patients, meningeal disease was detected on the gadopentetate-dimeglumine-enhanced T1-weighted images; the disease was detected on unenhanced images in three patients. Well-defined leptomeningeal patterns of enhancement were present in 15 patients. Other areas of involvement were the dura; brain parenchyma

Morphology of the distal tip of the spinal cord in Alligator mississippiensis.

Secondary neurulation is a common feature of vertebrate development, which in non-mammalian and non-anuran vertebrates, results in the formation of a caudal spinal cord. The present study was undertaken to describe the terminal end of the caudal spinal cord in a crocodylian, a group chosen for their unique status of a living-tailed archosaur. The caudal spinal cord of Alligator mississippiensis terminates near the intervertebral joint between the fourth and fifth terminal vertebrae. Prior to this termination, the dorsal root ganglia get proportionately larger, then stop before the termination

The circumventricular organs.

The circumventricular organs (CVOs) are midline structures located around the third and fourth ventricles that are characterized by a lack of blood-brain barrier. The pineal gland, median eminence, neurohypophysis and the subcommisural organ are classified as secretory, whereas the subfornical organ, area postrema and the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis as the sensory CVOs. Glial cells consisting of astrocytes and microglia/macrophages are present in all these organs. The pineal gland, neurohypophysis and the median eminence lack the presence of neurons that are present in the rest

The pineal recess of the opossum: a scanning and transmission electron microscope study.

Scanning and transmission electron microscope studies were performed in the pineal recess region of eighteen adult Didelphis albiventris opossums. With the scanning electron microscope, three concentric regions could be observed in the pineal recess: a central zone lined by cells free of cilia or microvilli, or by a meshwork of interdigitating cell processes; an intermediate zone lined by microvillous cells; and a peripheral zone, lined by ciliated cells. The transmission electron microscope revealed that the central zone is lined mainly by pinealocytes. The lining cells are frequently overlai

Hypertensive nonobstructive hydrocephalus as main magnetic resonance imaging feature in a dog with disseminated choroid plexus carcinomatosis.

Obstructive or nonobstructive hypertensive hydrocephalus is reported in choroid plexus tumors. Choroid plexus tumors typically present as T2-weighted hyperintense intraventricular masses with occasional cerebrospinal fluid-drop metastasis. Acquired neoplastic nonobstructive hydrocephalus without visible mass lesion in magnetic resonance imaging is not reported in dogs. A 4.5-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback presented with reduced mental status, unilaterally absent pupillary light reflex, and neck pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a nonobstructive hydrocephalus and widened lumbar subarachno

Dry Field Technique and Ultrasonic Aspirator in Endoscopic Removal of a Hemorrhagic Intraventricular Tumor in a 2-Year-Old Girl.

Neuroendoscopic procedures inside the ventricular system always bear the risk for an unexpected intraoperative hemorrhage. Most hemorrhages can be managed by constant irrigation with low- and high-pressure washes. In the other rare cases, the dry field technique may be necessary.1-5 It requires the aspiration of the entire intraventricular cerebrospinal fluid with the aim of establishing a proper environment for hemostasis. Video 1 illustrates a step-by-step removal of an intraventricular tumor in a 2-year-old girl through an endoscopic technique where the dry field technique was undertaken be

Lack of cadherins Celsr2 and Celsr3 impairs ependymal ciliogenesis, leading to fatal hydrocephalus.

Ependymal cells form the epithelial lining of cerebral ventricles. Their apical surface is covered by cilia that beat in a coordinated fashion to facilitate circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The genetic factors that govern the development and function of ependymal cilia remain poorly understood. We found that the planar cell polarity cadherins Celsr2 and Celsr3 control these processes. In Celsr2-deficient mice, the development and planar organization of ependymal cilia are compromised, leading to defective CSF dynamics and hydrocephalus. In Celsr2 and Celsr3 double mutant ependyma,

Ultrasonic aspiration in neuroendoscopy: first results with a new tool.

Neuroendoscopic techniques are often considered inapplicable to lesion resection because most lesions are too large for effective endoscopic resection in an appropriate time frame. To evaluate the potential of ultrasonic aspiration in neuroendoscopic procedures, the authors developed a new handpiece for endoscopic application. The instrument was subsequently tested in 10 cadaveric pig brains and applied in 5 clinical cases. In the pig brain, a precise and accurate aspiration of ventricular ependyma and brain parenchyma was obtained. Clinically, the device was applied in 3 patients with obstruc

Comparative expression analysis of the genes encoding polypyrimidine tract binding protein (PTB) and its neural homologue (brPTB) in prenatal and postnatal mouse brain.

The polypyrimidine tract binding protein (PTB) and its recently discovered homologue brain-enriched PTB (brPTB) are RNA binding proteins involved in the control of alternative splicing. We have characterized expression patterns of the PTB and brPTB in course of mouse brain development, using mRNA in situ hybridization. PTB is expressed in choroid plexi and ependyma at all the stages of development and temporarily in the mantle layer of migrating neuroblasts of fore-, mid- and hindbrain and in the external granular layer of cerebellum. In the neurons of adult mouse cerebrum and cerebellum expre

[Characteristics of the wall of the 3d cerebral ventricle in rats from the viewpoint of age].

The results of the light-, electron microscopic and cytophotometric investigation performed in the wall of the third cerebral ventricle are presented. It includes the ciliar, tanycytar ependyma and subependymal layer in male rats of three age groups (immature--1 month, mature--8-10 months and old--24-26 months of age). A certain decrease in the arrangement density of cellular elements of the ventricular wall is noted with age. A depressed functional activity of the ciliar ependymocytes is revealed with ageing. At the same time, some compensatory-adaptive rearrangements develop; they counteract

Intracranial myeloid sarcoma as the first presentation of acute myeloid leukemia and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary presentation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It can involve the meninges and ependyma presenting as extra-axial mass lesion. Rarely, it can also invade the brain parenchyma. It is commonly seen in children. It is usually misdiagnosed due to its close resemblance to other intracranial tumors (meningioma, metastasis, Ewing's sarcomas, and lymphoma). These are underdiagnosed if they precede the diagnosis of leukemia. CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old boy with isolated intracranial myeloid sarcoma who presented with raised intracranial

Frontoethmoidal encephalocele presenting in concert with schizencephaly.

BACKGROUND: Schizencephaly is a rare defect which is identified as clefts that are lined with grey matter extending from the ependyma of the cerebral ventricles to the pia mater. An encephalocele occurs due to failure of neural tube closure resulting in a gap through which cerebrospinal fluid and meninges can bulge into a pouch. There have been rare instances when these two defects have presented simultaneously. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 17-year-old child who was brought by his parents with complaint of swelling over his nose and forehead and aggressive behavior since birth. Mag

Ventricle equilibrium position in healthy and normal pressure hydrocephalus brains using an analytical model.

The driving force that causes enlargement of the ventricles remains unclear in case of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Both healthy and NPH brain conditions are characterized by a low transparenchymal pressure drop, typically 1 mm Hg. The present paper proposes an analytical model for normal and NPH brains using Darcy's and Biot's equations and simplifying the brain geometry to a hollow sphere with an internal and external radius. Self-consistent solutions for the large deformation problem that is associated with large ventricle dilation are presented and the notion of equilibrium or stab
